Description

In recent years, film photography has witnessed a significant renaissance—and not just among those who have previously shot with film. Interest in film photography and analog photography has also grown enormously among those who only have experience shooting digitally. In The Film Photography Handbook, 2nd Edition, authors Chris Marquardt and Monika Andrae speak to both types of film photographers as they offer an easy-to-understand, complete resource to shooting film. In this updated and expanded edition, they address today’s working climate, including such topics as the hybrid film/digital workflow, the digitization of negatives, and using smartphones for light metering and to assist in film processing. This book is intended for anyone who is curious about film and analog photography, whether you need a refresher course or are discovering this wonderful format for the first time. You’ll learn how easy it is to shoot and process black-and-white film at home, and that just a little special equipment is needed to get into film photography. You’ll learn all about: • The important differences between film and digital photography • Numerous film cameras, as well as how to buy a second-hand camera • Film formats, from 35 mm to medium format and large format • Exposure settings, tonal values, and tonal representations in different types of film, from color negatives and slides to the enormous spectrum of black-and-white films • Processing film, covering everything you need to know: equipment, chemicals, and workflow • Scanning negatives to bring your analog photography into a digital workflow • Both presenting and archiving your prints and negatives Working in such an “analog” medium requires a unique approach to photography, and it fosters a completely different form of creativity. Working in film and embracing analog photography can also prove to be a great inspiration for your own digital photography, as well. The Film Photography Handbook, 2nd Edition covers it all—from the technical to the creative—and will have you shooting film in no time, whether it’s with an old rangefinder, an inexpensive Holga, or a medium-format Rolleiflex or Hasselblad. • Great introductory book
I haven’t developed film in over 40 years. This book was the perfect reintroduction for me.

  • A Very Good Read
Reading this felt like an old friend is talking to me. This handbook is technical; goes through the history of each element of photography such as the different types of film cameras, the evolution of film, the exposure latitude ect. What I love about this handbook is at no point does the author ever mention that film is superior than digital, they always try to mention both forms of photography throughout the book. I encourage purchasing this for anyone whether your a beginner or advanced, throughout some chapters the author talks about some topics of photography that you could experiment on. It definitely helped me get out of my comfort zone, I am a beginner to film photography and I was just going to stick to 35mm because that's all I knew but now I'm looking at other types of cameras and film and I'm excited to improve! ... show more

  • Mostly focused on black and white photography
Great books with lots of history and covers everything you will need to know to get into film photography. They do touch on color photos but a lot of the content is focused on black and white photography. Do not take this to mean that focus is not warranted. There is a lot more to black and white photography than one would assume. This book has certainly opened my eyes to all the options and types of black and white film as well as how to process it. I would say this is a must have book for any amateur film photographer or beginner. ... show more

  • Great Content!!
I love photography but did not started learning until the Digital Cameras era. This book is full of information, more that what i could imagine. It inspired me to go and get an old film camera and start experimenting with Black and White. This book is so full of information that regardless of film or digital medium, it teaches you to be better. There are many books about film photography, but they are mostly dated, and this one was written for this era using current examples of what is available. Thank you. ... show more

  • A book packed full of film information
I received this book as a Christmas gift from my wonderful daughter. Before digital cameras, I had shot film as well as taken black and white film photography classes -- spent hours developing and printing photos. This book contains so so so much more information than one can ever hope to get out of taking classes. The instructors had just made mention of pushing and pulling black and white film, now it is explained in this book with details. And this book covers color films as well. This is not a read from one end to the other end book -- you will want to read the beginning of the book then discover the section of the book that sparks you to experiment with a new technique. Once finished what that part of the book you will be drawn into another part and start all over again with learning a new way of using film for photography. I see this book being referred back to over the years. ... show more

  • not helpful
Not much instruction on taking better pictures on film. More of an introduction to what methods are available for taking pictures and post processing.
