Description

George Eastman’s career developed in a particularly American way. The founder of Kodak progressed from a delivery boy to one of the most important industrialists in American history, and a crucial innovator in photographic history. Eastman died in 1932, and left his house to the University of Rochester. Since 1949 the site has operated as an international museum of photography and film, and today holds the largest collection of its kind in the world, containing over 400,000 images and negatives—among them the work of such masters as Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, and Ansel Adams. Home also to 23,000 cinema films, five million film stills, one of the most important silent film collections, technical equipment and a library with 40,000 books on photography and film, the George Eastman House is a pilgrimage site for researchers, photographers, and collectors from all over the world. This volume curates the most impressive images from the collection in chronological order to offer an incomparable overview of photographic history. Read more

  • Another good reference book
Small size but lots of info on history of photography.

  • To move forward you need the past
A great history of photography in one book. I found by looking back at photography's masters. I could refresh old ideas into new projects for myself. Where, I applied lessons learn in the past with today's cameras and I found it has made me a better photographer. Not only were many of these masters leaders in what they chose to photograph, but also raised the bar for those coming after them. A great book for anyone wishing to move their photography into an art form. ... show more

  • Good Information, but Difficult to Navigate
Wonderful information and pictures that follow right along with my History of Photography class. My only compliant is how ridiculously long the chapters are! I can hardly even tell where they begin and end. It's frustrating when I have chapter summaries to turn in for my class!!! And the glossery is very unhelpful as well. ... show more

  • Excellent and thorough
This is a beautiful book with excellent information. The reproductions of the photographs are very very good. The writing is informative and well done. I highly recommend. I am a high school photo teacher, and I am using this book for research for teaching photo history in my classes.

  • Heavier Emphasis on *History* than Photographic *Art*
Beware that this is more a history book about the early days of photography, than it is a retrospective of photography as an art form. The dimensions of the book are small, the photographs themselves are very small, and the text is very dry (think: textbook dry). I was hoping to learn more about photography as an art form. Also, "From 1839 to the Present" only goes to the 80's and 90's. Very little color, and certainly nothing digital. Finally, all the photographs come from one source: The George Eastman Museum in Rochester, NY. ... show more

  • Great Book
This book is an easy read. Unfortunately, the author had decided to really heavily on the use of pictures. Nonetheless, this book does a great job at illustrating the vastness of the Eastman Collection.
