Description

Ghosts, aliens, zombies, secret agents, and it’s only the first week of school—it’s going to be a long year. This tale is told through the eyes of Oliver, a twelve-year-old boy with a large birthmark on his right cheek, who desperately wants to fit in with his classmates. When Oliver’s great grandfather’s pocket watch is confiscated at school, Raven Ridge Academy, the new kid, Chase, a budding detective, befriends Oliver and vows to help him get it back. Chase assembles the talents of a small group of kids for the mission of reclaiming Oliver’s pocket watch, but little do they know what other deep, dark, and dangerous mysteries they will stumble upon during their investigations. The new kid sports blond hair and thick eyeglasses. He carries a magnifying glass in his back pocket and rides a beat-up, black dirt bike. A self-proclaimed authority on paranormal activities, Chase convinces the other kids to go along with his theories in investigating the curious happenings at their school. Oliver, who is skeptical, recounts this entire adventure much as Watson recounts those of Sherlock Holmes. All the while, Johnny Ricker, the local bully; Ana Rahela Balenovic, his academic rival; and Adam, his annoying little brother, constantly torment him. Oliver’s two friends; Eduard, a tall, geeky, black kid with glasses, and Gio, a short, white kid with a prosthetic half-leg, join Oliver and Chase on the adventure too. And then there is Jax, the girl of his dreams, with long black hair, electric blue eyes, and chestnut-colored skin. He constantly thinks about her. Raven Ridge Academy, looking like a giant red castle, lies just outside the small town of Raven Ridge, located at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The town is secluded in a rural setting with open ranches and farms. In the woods near the outskirts of town lies a hidden tree house that the core group of kids uses as their headquarters for their meetings about paranormal investigations. What begins as the simple task of reclaiming Oliver’s pocket watch swiftly turns into a full-fledged investigation into the many paranormal happenings at Raven Ridge Academy. Danger chases the kids as they uncover many secrets surrounding their school. As the kids delve further into their investigation, they find themselves caught in a web of trouble, their lives in peril, the fate of the world possibly at stake, and time running out. Will the kids solve the mystery before it’s too late? The Dirt Bike Detective is an epic and entertaining tale for the entire family, combining endearing characters, intricate mysteries, humor, and excitement for all ages. Read more

  • Best young adult book I’ve heard in a long time!!!!!
Format: Audiobook
🏆🎧 ABR Reviewer's Choice Award Winner Oliver wants to impress his history teacher so he swipes his great grandfathers pocket watch and from that one bad decision and a bully at school, Oliver’s life changes. Chase, a new student tries to save Oliver from the bully but only makes things worse, the watch comes up missing along with a teacher and Anna “three names” seems to have a crush on Oliver. Then there’s the President ... lots of action! Douglas Hoover captures the fragility of middle school Kids’s ego, need to fit in but also be special expertly. The inner workings of their minds ~and kid you not you will see yourself as a child through the characters and their predicaments. Hoover builds the characters and their fears realistically and with genuine care. Vivid descriptions with realistic dialog provides an action-packed listen. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think listeners of all ages would find this fanciful tale interesting and exciting. Ramon de Ocampo performed this audiobook professionally and with distinct voices and accents. I found his voice lent the book a little kick as his voice. Rough the characters to life. • It was OK
Format: Kindle
It was a rather long winded story about middle school boys whose reality is aliens and zombies. The Prologue was another 20+ pages recapping the story. It was boring.

  • Fun middle school detective novel just off the beaten path
Format: Kindle
This was a decent mystery written for the middle school crowd and I enjoyed trying to puzzle out what was really going on in this school. I liked that each of the kids had their own strengths and weaknesses as they became a friend group and worked together to investigate the things in their school that didn't add up. It all began with the loss of Oliver's grandfather's watch on the first day of school and the new kid Chase, the nerdy detective with more confidence than anyone Oliver had met before. I really liked the setting (small-town Colorado), and the history the author wrote into the place. The ghost stories were fun, and the mystery was interesting for me to unravel, even as I rolled my eyes as much as Jax over their suppositions and conclusions. The only things that kept me from giving it 5 stars were two things. I didn't like how judgmental and mean Oliver was about certain people (Ana and his brother), and while I get their enthusiasm, I didn't like how much they ignored what Jax had to say because she was a girl. Because let's face it, they didn't want her to join the club in the first place. It's also a bit long for a middle school book, but I believe that those who enjoy reading will become immersed in this story and want to find out what happens. It was a slow burn, and at times meandered as we got a play-by-play of everything Oliver did and observed. The first day of school took about a third of the book! But I was glad I persevered, as it gave me time to pull together the clues and try to see if I could figure out what was going on. Without revealing spoilers, I liked Chase's summary at the end about each of their suspects and how he came to each conclusion. One other thing, despite some of the outlandish suppositions they (especially Gio and Chase) kept suggesting, there is an element of the paranormal/sci-fi that is never fully resolved and leaves you guessing. I imagine that will continue in future books. I enjoyed this adventure/detective story and would be interested in reading more by this author. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from Booksirens. All thoughts and opinions are my own. ... show more
