  • Absolutely incredible.
I have waited for this book for so, so long. Trust me, it does not disappoint. This book was absolutely beautiful and amazing and I loved every single minute of it. Haymitch is one of my favorite characters in the entire Hunger Games franchise and it was interesting to see the world from his point of view. There were also characters from the original novels, which I thought was really nostalgic and interesting. The many Easter eggs in the whole thing were really cool, like Peeta’s dad and the mockingjay pin’s origin. Definitely worth the read. The book was also just like the original books, and it was SUCH a tearjerker. Anyone who doesn’t cry at the end seriously doesn’t have a heart! It was so sad. Other than the amazing storyline, the book came in perfect condition and I was so amazed at whoever did the cover art. Kudos to them because it looks AMAZING! I love this book like all-fire. ... show more

  • The Heartbreaking Story of Haymitch Abernathy
Wow - what a read, Suzanne! This prequel to the original Hunger Games books has quickly become my favorite book in the series. Reading about Haymitch's involvement in the second quarter quell had me smiling, laughing, and ultimately crying in intimate moments that he has with Louella & Maysilee. Getting to see how woven the people are of District 12 and the previous connections that Haymitch had to Katniss's & Peter's parents, along with Effie, Plutarch, Mags, Wiress, and Beetee, truly had me so locked in while reading that I was forgetting the world around me, and that is how a truly well-done story should make you feel! Would recommend to anyone who loved the original books, as well as new fans. Very glad that Suzanne let us into the world of a younger Haymitch, and he was written beautifully, even better than I was hoping for. Amazon did a great job with delivering this on release day for me as well since I had pre-ordered the book a few weeks prior. I had a small dent in one of the lower-right edges of the front cover, but nothing that doesn't happen in typical transit. ... show more

  • Must Read!!!
As a forever reader of the Hunger Games novels, to say I was excited for "Sunrise On The Reaping", would be a massive understatement. These are books that are just too hard to put down. Suzanne Collins just has a way in her story telling that locks you in. You can actually FEEL what the characters are feeling (or maybe that's just me lol). Now as far as this particular book. It answered SOOO many questions about why Haymich is the way he is in the original books. You get introduced to so many new characters, as well as some old ones from the original books (not just President Snow, obviously). You get to find out how several old characters get their starts. Not only was it informative, but it was so gripping, and kept you on the edge of your seat. The Arena and the things within it, is what threw me for the biggest loop. My only negative for the book, is I wish it was longer. I'm typically a Dark Romance girly, and I'm used to books being well over 400+ pages long. I felt the ending was a little....rushed. I personally would've LOVED to have a couple more chapters sprinkled in on the years leading up to Katniss and Peeta's reaping, as well as a little more time. Granted, Haymich spent most of his time, post 50th Hunger Games, consistently in a drunken stuper, I still would've loved more. All in all, I loved the book. Would definitely love some more like it, except directed more for other victors like Johanna Mason and Finnick O'dair, and their games. Hopefully if/when they make this into a movie, they do the book justice. ... show more

  • Haymitch's Story: A Heartbreaking Prequel/Sequel
First thing I'd want everyone to know? Excellent book! Read it! I'm not a fan of sequels. I cringe when I hear one is coming out; especially if it is a follow-up to a book or movie I REALLY enjoyed. I had the same reaction to the Hunger Games sequels when they were announced even though I have no doubts about the talents of Suzanne Collins. It would not have been the first franchise that went to the well too often, as the saying goes. The first sequel/prequel, BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES, was a good book, but not a favorite of mine. I had no empathy or a great deal of interest in how young Snow became what he was by the time of the original trilogy. The ugliness and brutality of the games' origins before their evolution to the pomp and pageantry of the later games was fascinating and unexpected. It was the final chapters and the epilogue when the characters eventually grabbed me the hardest. On the other hand, SUNRISE ON THE REAPING, earned my investment in the story and the characters from the start. Part of that was probably my existing empathy for the character of Haymitch. While avoiding spoilers, on a wide scale, the book made a beautiful bridge between the 10th games in THE BALLAD and the era of the 74th and 75th games of Mockingjay Trilogy. At a personal level, the tragedies of Haymitch's story were revealed. Haymitch's story gives the character so much more dimension; and some other characters we've met before. Readers will see the Haymitch of the Hunger Games trilogy in a slightly different, more painful light without retconning the character. Once again, the epilogue in SUNRISE added insights and heartfelt "Oh, Wow!" moments for me. The original characters will always be my favorites and the focus of the Hunger Games. SUNRISE ON THE REAPING is a fully actualized story that could stand on its own merit, but it just finds its own place in the series so perfectly, without creating inconsistencies (as we have seen with so many other prequels and sequels) or diminishing the central characters of the original trilogy that made the stories so popular in the first place. (Yeah, lookin' at you, Terminator) I hope the upcoming movie lives up to it. Highly recommended. ... show more
