  • Mystery and Suspense -- Oh the Suspense!
Format: Kindle
I have now binge-read through the first three collections, and though this review is nominally of the second collection of four full-length (and then some) novels, it should well reflect all those I have enjoyed in this series in equal measure. The characters are well drawn and nicely developed through the series. Each novel can be read fully as a stand-alone, but they are all enriched by following the arc of the full series. The two primary characters -- the entire cold case team -- are (mostly) likeable, and definitely honest, honorable, and really good at solving complex mysteries. And, the mysteries! And suspense! These are outstanding examples of plotting, characterization, and twisty crime solving. I imagine some readers will be able to puzzle these mysteries out better than I, but I find the twists and occasional red herrings so compelling that I'm staying up far too late, to make just a little more progress. Yes, it's a cliche, but I want to bill Blake Banner for missing sleep! As several reviewers have observed, Banner uses a mystifying mix of British and American terms and turns-of-phrase. Sometimes it comes out in dialog with our hero and heroine, sometimes it pops up in narrative. The central locale is the Bronx, New York, but York, UK, or London would perhaps feel more "at home" for the settings based upon many of the British-isms that come up throughout. Sadly for this eager reader, Mr Banner's bio is yet another mystery story, and I'm sure that very few actually know where his mountaintop is located -- in the Commonwealth, somewhere, or hidden in the USA heartland? Nonetheless, his entire product thus far gets an honest and enthusiastic FIVE STARS. I'm grateful that I found Banner and the Dead Cold Series quite well developed (22 full-length novels). I have nearly half the series yet to go, and I don't know how I can wait for the next when I finish all these. ... show more

SINS OF THE FATHER Nothing says guilty like a stupid lie, and he kept on lying. Interesting dialog between Dehan and Stone of how they find the suspect in a cold case. The detectives have a sense of humor , going over their notes at a bar and a beer, Enjoyable.laid back mystery. STRANGE & SINISTER Stone and Dehan are handed a cold case. Kathleen depressed after baby was born, went to Colorado, question is why and who killed here there. Issac saying his folks were like stiff old boot leather and she was not close to them. His ex wife got close to Mo during this time, saying she was also a friend of Kathleen. Divorced and she married Mo. A chilling story of people who want to get out if a small town for the big city. Trusting and thinking that family would act and stay together. HEART TO. KILL A journalist who get an apartment and consecrates on writing till done. This time he had a mistress for several months, when the manuscript was done. He gave her the news, he was married would get a divorce song and dance. The wife finds out just before his execution type killing. Finding the senator Carol Henessey also running for president, was the journalist topic.Everyone is a suspect, not knowing what time he was killed, so no alibi is good. Good story with many twists UNNATURAL MURDER Good thing I was hooked into the plot, when it came to Stone and Dehan’s when they did the interviews, the cussing of the suspects was too much. Over all this was a clean, very deep plot, and their diligence of digging for clues was good, Like the characters, of Stone and Dehan. ... show more

  • Great crime series
Format: Kindle
I have just read the first 8 books in this series and will begin the next 4 as soon as I write this review. I have had the first set of books in my unread library for months, but for one reason or another I woulf skip over them and read another book. About a week ago I thought I should finally read them as I was tiring of seeing the unread series in my library. What a pleasant surprise! I really like the Stone and DeHan characters. They are very likable and grow in each and every book. Most importantly, I'm a closet romantic so I'm glad they finally recognize their relationship for what it truly was. More than the main characters though, the author also gets better and better with each new book. The stories are well written with great twists and turns, but they are not redundant as are many series I've read. I highly recommended these books to readers that enjoy crime thrillers. Keep them coming Blake Banner! ... show more

  • Amazing mysteries
Format: Kindle
I have read the first eight books in this series. I have thoroughly enjoyed everyone of them. I have felt a connection to the characters. The author introduces information about the characters throughout the series instead of up front so you feel that you are coming to knw them. The relationship between the two man characters blossoms as the series progresses. Each succeeding story seems to build on the previous. The characters even refer back to previous cases and characters. I am amazed that these are self published. This series is every bit as good as any I have ever read and better than a majority of them. It is a mix of the hardboiled detective and Sherlock Holmes. The stories are always original and you never foresee the solution. I highly recommend this series and I will read anything new that he writes. ... show more

  • Excellent Writing with Good Suspense and Unexpected Twists
Format: Kindle
I don't know where this guy came from but he should have started writing long ago. The story lines are good, the details are just enough without being heavy, and the logical conclusions are superb! Blake is able to paint a scene and make you feel the weather, the mood of the characters, and the scene in a way that really puts you in the character's shoes and state of mind. I'm in the process of reading his other books but if you're not reading the Dead Cold Series you're doing yourself a great disservice. This author does not disappoint! ... show more

  • Almost perfect
Format: Kindle
I have read most of the series, and the stories are well-written, the characters are very believable and the plots are complex and well developed. Overall, very good reads, each and every one. BUT - (I admit that this is nit picky) there are quite a few things that are just plain wrong that detract from my enjoyment. The stories take place in NYC, with American characters. However, reference is made to victims' "National Insurance Number" - no such thing in America, dates and times are in the European format, rather than in the American one, cookies are called biscuits, and cans are called tins. I presume that the author is British, as these and other terms not mentioned here are common to the UK. It just breaks the flow for me when one of these things come up. I know these are minor infractions, but as a person who reads 200+ books a year, many by English authors, it irks me when the slang and the terms are not consistent with the location and characters' nationality. It's important to get it right. ... show more

  • They are all great reads
Format: Kindle
This Dead Cold Series: Books 5-8 are all terrific. The protagonists are likable, their partnership rocks, they solve multiple cases for each cold case they take up. The plots flow like a mountain river smooth when the river widens and wildly chaotic when it narrows. The pacing is excellent. I look forward to reading every book in this series. ... show more
