  • This movie is great, bad reviews are ridiculous
I LOVED this movie. Being of mixed-race heritage from a complicated ancestry of black and Native American and white, similar to the main storyline, I really connected to the movie. And I love the ending...I agree with other reviews and think this movie had some questionable plot lines, but overall, it tells a pretty believable and admirable tale. The acting could have been better, and they probably could have had the groom's family at the wedding---of course, he did say he did not know much about his family, etc. BUT I do not think anything about the story was romanticized. I cringed at a lot of the scenes depicted from the past, so on and so forth. Also, I like the honesty between the two main characters before they kiss, about how they felt about the other's race, etc....I also like the ending with the little girl was beautiful. I think the premise was great, and I will add this to my favorites. You're never gonna get perfection, but I award progress. ... show more

  • Redemption and Romance
This story while fiction rings true in many ways. The evil of racism shouldn't be ignored but at the same time should not anchor us to a past that inhibits progress. Watching the story unfold in the past and present leading to a thoughtful conclusion made for good entertainment. The leads are strong characters with substance. The movie could have been longer to flesh out other aspects of each lead but was sufficiently edited to provide a smooth flowing story. The scenes with any amorous activity were tactfully done. ... show more

  • More of the Same Old Nonsense
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. This poorly written, and even worse acted story continues to repeat the tale of the relationship between (En)slaved person and plantation owner. The only twist involved the 'master' hating Blacks so much he was never depicted climbing into the bed of any female property. Another plot involved revealing how evil the 'master' was when shown how abusive he was to his wife and willing to kill his own child. Of course the tale wouldn't be complete without scenes of the present day Big Black Attorney saving the life of the white woman being brutalized by her vicious Black client. I wanted to see if my predictions were correct regarding the Black and white attorneys but had to TURN THE CRAP OFF when the Black man became enraged at the discovery of shackles and whipping post when looking for his mother's grave site. By the way this was after declaring his forgiveness for the grandfather who had his mother beat to death. I think the scene showing the Black man's fraternity 'brands' was the straw. This man participates in a practice of 'branding' other Black men as a ritual for membership in a GREEK named fraternity. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. THIS ONE IS ONE OF THE WORST EVER PRODUCED. I wonder what Amazon hoped to accomplish presenting this foolishness on the July 4th weekend... Hmmmm. In today's racial climate I'm waiting for a film that tells the TRUTH about the wickedness of those who inherited the privilege and insidiousness of their forefathers. Let's talk about some of the fears that form the basis of the race based terrorist attacks that are a part of this country's history and tradition. GENETICS 101. There is so much wrong with this movie I wonder how they got funding to produce it. Shame on the man who played the part of Andrew McGrath I certainly hope you got paid a lot of money but I doubt it. ... show more

  • It's the all-important message that counts!
Recognized title of film that I watched years ago. Interesting plot based on history with an extremely strong message that we all need in the world today. Well worth my time on rewatching.

  • This was a story of HOPE & LOVE!
The viewers could tell the ending even at the beginning of the movie...the young beautiful White female and the young handsome Black man would eventually fall in love. The viewers can even see the connection between the McGrath name and the young Black lawyer. Even though the script and thus the acting were just "ok", the plot was a story that history books have failed to tell. Interracial unions helped to create the country that we now call the United States of America...like it or not. The institution of slavery was a BRUTAL one and this movie depicted that fact better than some well-written movies. While I have seen better-written historical dramas, I have also seen worse. In the end, hope and freedom to love...despite the color lines...found their way into the lives of the main characters. I simply pray that real life will imitate the movies...where love overcomes all obstacles and reigns supreme! *View this movie for yourself and determine your own thoughts about it. ... show more

  • Might actually deserve a five rating!
Characters were well cast; scenes of brutal treatment of slaves were not overdone, but reflected the mood of the day in which they lived. Interesting plot, especially the solution of the ancestry search through an old journal. Though finding lost family is really not as easy as this particular search appeared to be, it still is encouraging to see that it is possible when personal effects reveal enough of the past that the search ends in victory. Thank you for also making the problems so visible that are then passsed on to future generations who lack the needed family support that both a loving mother and father can provide. It gives encouragement to those who take in the message and make it part of their future. ... show more

  • Beautiful
Loved this story. It was beautiful, and sad, and interesting at the same time. The South’s history is sad, but it has come a long way. I feel everyone should watch this movie and enjoy it. A bit easy to see the end of this story before you get there, but a good movie.

  • GREAT STORY LINE AND WELL WRITTEN
This was a great movie, all though there were sad parts. All in all it was a feel good movie for me. Kept my interested from the moment it started until the end. I actually didn't want it to end. The ending was great though!! Enjoyed it!
