Description

1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King’s timeless novella “The Body”—originally published in his short story collection Different Seasons, and adapted into the film classic Stand by Me—is now available as a stand- alone publication. It’s 1960 in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. Ray Brower, a boy from a nearby town, has disappeared, and twelve-year-old Gordie Lachance and his three friends set out on a quest to find his body along the railroad tracks. During the course of their journey, Gordie, Chris Chambers, Teddy Duchamp, and Vern Tessio come to terms with death and the harsh truths of growing up in a small factory town that doesn’t offer much in the way of a future. A timeless exploration of the loneliness and isolation of young adulthood, Stephen King’s The Body is an iconic, unforgettable, coming-of-age story. Read more

  • Simply Masterful

If you have not read “The Body” your repertoire of literature is missing a major piece of the proverbial puzzle. I love this story and periodically read it again just to I find myself lost in the joys of my own boyhood. It is and always will be a masterpiece.

  • Good for summer reading
Format: Paperback
This book was perfect for summer reading for 9th graders. I read many Stephen King and I’ve never think it is something for teens. However, my son loved it. This story tells more like a friendships rather than crime scenes how author described is truly amazing. Chris was such a good friend for Gordie. I do remember this was movie and definitely teen can associate their real life about friendship that is exist. ... show more

The movie is a surprisingly very accurate retelling, almost down to key details that most filmmakers would find unnecessary. But that’s Rob Reiner for you, there are obviously some notable differences, this story is a tad more magical realism, there’s a much bleaker side to the ending. And Gordies life as an author takes center stage a lot more, there’s a sequence near the early middle, that I do think kills the pacing a tad. With a story that isn’t in the movie by the way, that kind of comes out of nowhere, and while it’s interesting it doesn’t have the same thematic relevance as Lard A&& does. It’s a great story, I haven’t read a ton of Kings shorts or his novellas, because he’s written so much that it’s hard to keep up. Plus most of his shorts and novellas are what RL Stine would call a feature length novel so that’s a ton of reading. But the high spots are always high, The Body is no exception. ... show more

  • Friends and Growing Up
Format: Paperback
Rated the book a 4.75 but this is of course one of King's greatest shorter tales. Not horror really, more slice of life. Friendships, growing up, and consequences for actions. Even if it is the right thing to do. Great story

  • the movie was better
Format: Kindle
It was hard to get into this story- not one of King’s best. Too many characters, and the book within the book was awful. Some lines were good and memorable and will make for a decent book club discussion. Profanity was overdone.
