King wrote a totally different story then the movie Stand by Me. The story was darker then the movie which I expected it to be close too. Even though it wasn't I enjoyed it just as much. Since King did not write the screenplay so the movie was somewhat sugar coated. That's why I enjoyed this story because it was reality and how life can be cruel. Well worth the time to read. The author is a phenomenal writer. I have read many of his books. I have also seen movies based on his books. I was eagerly wanting to read The Body, and to see if the movie was better. Not the typical horror story readers might expect from Stephen King, but if you're a writer, and you've read his memoir On Writing, this tale makes perfect sense coming from him. Gordie, the main character, is a writer looking back on a memorable summer. Perhaps the last one of its kind before he and his friends drift apart into their teenage years. It's full of nostalgia that anyone of any time period can recognize as an end of an era, so to speak. The end of childhood. There's dated slang and some things that probably wouldn't be acceptable in today's market, but it's a snapshot of that time and worth a read. Many moons ago, I saw the film ‘Stand by Me’—based on Stephen King’s novella, “The Body.” This is my first time reading it. The novella is well-written and King kept me engaged and emotionally invested. ‘The Revenge of Lard Ass Hogan’ reminded me of a party that took place in my neighborhood when I was growing up. All the teenagers were at a house party. And, naturally, several of the kids were making out. As a couple were kissing, the girl got sick and puked into the boy’s mouth. This, in turn, made him start puking and before the night was over, the entire house was covered in vomit. Ahhh, the good old days of childhood! ... show more

The Body is my favorite Stephen King short story. And the movie Stand by me is my favorite. It was neat hearing this story read by one of the actors that was a young boy in the movie.

I had seen the movie multiple times before finally deciding to read the book it was based on. Truthfully, some (many) scenes are word-for-word. They didn’t alter much aside from the ending and just a few other small portions of the book. I felt like I was rewatching the movie as I was reading it tbh. It’s almost like King wrote it for the screen. I liked it okay. I’d probably give it 3.5/5 if I could. I appreciate the novella length. It probably would’ve been better had I not seen the movie beforehand though. The two are too similar. ... show more
