  • Excellent Book.
Format: Paperback
This book is excellent and packed with useful information. It might be the best book I've come across for beginners and beginner-plus level artists to understand and practice the process of oil painting. The insights are helpful, the organization is great, and the explanations are clear. There are many wonderful books on oil painting that have taught me a lot, but if I were stranded on an island and wanted to learn oil painting, this book (The Big Book of Oil Painting) along with Richard Schmid's book (Alla Prima II: Everything I Know about Painting--And More) would be my top choices. ... show more

  • Desert-Island "one book" for oil painting.
Format: Paperback
Save your forty grand of art school tuition and just do what Jose' says. The most important painting book in my library (of dozens of painting books). The One Book. Brilliant, methodical, comprehensive. Crazy value. Parramon is also a superb painter. There are a couple of en plein air paintings of his in here that I would love to own. ... show more

  • Great older used book at a good price.
Format: Hardcover
This book was originally printed in the 1980s in Italy. Mine is a newer edition but in very good condition for about 6$. I'm just beginning to paint again after 30 years away from it and this book has a nice section on history and technique of oil color; Also a big color chart and several exercises in using classic styles. Perspective is important to me and there is a section on that as well as several different styles. It's an overview and really a nice coffee table book for artsy types like me. Happy painting! ... show more

  • Good Overview of History and Technique, Even for Beginners
Format: Paperback
This book is a condensed course on the subject of oil painting: history, including specifics on several of the masters; technique in drawing and painting; materials and how to use them; arrangement of an efficient studio; color theory and technique. As an absolute beginner with oil paints, I found it enjoyable and somewhat daunting. Parramon makes it all sound quite involved, yet simple. Not easy, mind you: the process of oil painting is hard work if you follow the steps and techniques he gives. I admit that I was looking for more detailed instruction - more like a Bob Ross lesson style - but I am glad to have Parramon's book as part of my beginner's library. ... show more

  • Great demonstrations on how to paint with oils
Format: Hardcover
Liked that it demonstrated how to paint with oils, how to mix colors, how to do shading etc. It is a very informative book.

  • How to attack any landscape
Format: Paperback
The marvelous variety of painting situations is dug into in specifics in this very ample book. Tremendously practical and helpful in how to paint a huge variety of situations.

  • Flawed stock. Flawed stock.
Format: Paperback
Nice book. Should probably have been disclosed that last part of book is interrupted by upside down pages with print in margin cropped off and also pages that were not only upside down and cropped at side, but attached at top and not bound into book. Awkward.

  • More then I expected.
Format: Paperback
This is one of the most complete oil painting books I have ever read. I rank it right up there with Gregg kruetz problem solving for oil painters and Richard schmids alla prima. The book covers a number of topics from history to techniques. The best part is that I got it used for a cheap price and it was in great shape. If I could give this book 7 stars I would. ... show more
