  • Lots of information, fun tutorials
I got hours of enjoyment out of this book and will more than likely go through it again. Great lessons on how important value is in achieving the correct color temperature. On a side note, I liked the book so much I was willing to write a second review even though Amazon inexplicably rejected my first one. ... show more

  • Great value study
Getting the value wrong can really impact your painting and it's harder than it looks. This book is helping me to get a better handle on improving my own painting by walking me through the process of creating color strings and working from dark to light. Very useful book.

  • Good Beginner's Guide to Oil Painting
I just started oil painting a couple of months ago, I haven't ever painted anything, so I'm on the hunt for good basic and understandable direction in oil painting. I haven't done all the exercises in this book, although I've done a few of them, but I do think it's very helpful. It gives you basic exercises to do with good instruction. It tells you what paints you need to get started and step by step directions to finish the painting. I would recommend this book, I plan to continue the exercises and hope that this helps me to paint better, because it's not easy. ... show more

  • One of the best books out there!
Whether you’re a beginner looking to finally learn to paint in oils, or a more experienced painter wanting to brush up on alla prima painting skills, this is the book for you. Clear, concise exercises and examples show you it how it’s done. It starts with an overview of supplies and setting up the workspace using simple materials, and you only need to buy a few colors and a couple of brushes. Craig shows you how to mix colors and render simple forms, then moves on to more complex subjects. He emphasizes the importance of practice to get better at painting, just like anything else, the more you paint, the better you get at painting. I’m a professional artist and have been painting for 40 years, if I was teaching again I would have this as my textbook. ... show more

  • Excellent book for beginners!!
I am so impressed with this book! Compared to all the other oil painting books I own- this one is for amazing for beginners and intermediate painters alike! Other art books contain so much extra information that it’s hard for a beginner to know where to start. (I’m speaking from personal experience!) But, this book is different. It’s like having your own personal teacher walk you through step by step. The book progresses in such a well-thought out manner, introducing ideas and concepts in very digestible steps. The pictures and descriptions are so very helpful. And best of all, there are numerous exercises to work through that are easy enough that you’ll actually want to do them! If you are a beginner painter, save yourself so much frustration and get this book first!!! ... show more

  • Excellent!
I have quite a few "Beginners" books for oil painters as I started painting late in life and am largely self tought. This book does not presuppose any preknowledge, yet within the first few pages I picked up some info I have not found in any other book. The excercises are excellent, well chosen and well explained. I've taken the book to art class and hope the author gets some well-deserved sales from it. Good job Graig Stevens! ... show more

  • Best Beginner’s Book I have Ever Found
I have read a lot of books that are supposed to be for the beginning oil painter, and they always leave me hanging. This book is clear and concise. The author takes one through about 21 small 5” x 7” paintings designed to be completed in the Alla Prima style, with a painting a day. My schedule doesn’t allow a painting a day but I am still happy with my success. The painting exercises start with a few value studies of geometric shapes before moving into color studies of things like fruit, a silver pot, a sneaker etc. This book doesn’t confuse the beginning oil painter with a lot of principles, you just get to paint. ... show more
