  • Custom Meal Plans for Dogs
This book is a wonderful guide for pet owners looking to switch their dogs to healthier, homemade meals. What really makes it special is that all the recipes are vet-approved and follow AAFCO nutritional standards, so you can be confident that your dog is getting a well-balanced diet, no matter their age or size—whether they're a playful puppy, an energetic adult, or a senior with special needs. What I loved most about the book are the meal plans. They're well-structured, making it easy to adjust your dog's diet based on their activity level and health conditions. The author does a fantastic job in the chapter on transitioning to homemade food. It's not just about throwing together ingredients; she encourages you to keep an eye on important things like your dog's energy levels, appetite, and weight to make sure the switch is going smoothly. One thing I found super helpful is the gradual transition plan. You start by mixing 25% homemade food with store-bought meals and, over time, move to a fully homemade diet. It's broken down so simply, day by day, and comes with a handy list of signs to watch out for, like if your dog seems extra tired or starts drinking more water. It really puts your mind at ease knowing there's guidance for every step. Another aspect that impressed me is how the book goes beyond “one-size-fits-all” meals. There are specific recipes for dogs with allergies or health conditions, like grain-free fish dishes or low-fat meals for dogs struggling with weight. The variety is impressive. From the hearty Beef & Brown Rice Bowl to lighter options like Sweet Potato & Pea Mash, the book offers something for every dog's taste. All in all, this book is thoughtful, easy to follow, and packed with practical advice that makes the transition to homemade food feel completely doable. ... show more

  • This is more than just a cookbook.
There’s advice on supplements (the importance of calcium in your pets diet) when feeding your pets homemade dog food. This cookbook is full of helpful suggestions, too many to mention. The recipes are simple and easy to follow and most of them are only three or four ingredients. Example: Boiled or grilled Boneless Chicken Breast, Steamed Brown Rice, Steamed Green Beans. Dice the chicken & green beans and mix together in a bowl with the rice and drizzle 1tsp olive oil over the mixture before serving. ... show more

  • Thoughtful, trustworthy, and packed with care
If you’ve ever looked at the back of a bag of dog food and thought, “What even is all this?”—this book is for you. It’s written by a vet who clearly knows her stuff but explains everything in a way that actually makes sense. She shares her personal story about her dog Max, which really pulled me in, and from there it just feels like she’s walking you through everything step-by-step. One thing I really liked is how complete the book feels. It covers why nutrition matters, how to tell if your dog’s ready to switch, how to transition safely, and even how to measure portions and track results. And it’s not just info—there are tons of recipes for different meats, veggies, and dietary needs. You can tell it was written with love and care. That said, there were a couple of parts—like the amino acid section—that felt a little textbook-ish. Not a big deal, but it stood out compared to the warm tone in the intro. Also, I think a super quick-start visual guide or chart would’ve made it easier to get going right away. But overall? This is the kind of book that makes you feel confident about cooking for your dog. Whether you’re brand new to homemade meals or just want to do it better, it’s a solid guide. ... show more

  • Super comprehensive, vetted and valuable
I thought this would just be a cookbook with some fun dog treat recipes but it goes way beyond that! It considers canine nutrition, how to transition to different food and monitor response, etc. Plus there are about 60 recipes, well organized into categories (these are full-on meals, even some in the slow cooker) as well as several more for doggies on dietary restrictions. Even some full meal plans to guarantee well-balanced nutrition and happy dogs. This book was actually written by a Doctor with 30+ years of veterinary dietetics experience. It covers different needs depending on stage of life and various supplements for certain issues like joint pain. I didn't even know some of the "foods to avoid" so that's helpful too. Every recipe is outlines with a list of ingredients, instructions, substitution tips, vitamins and minerals and a full breakdown of nutritional information. I have been super impressed with the book. The recipes look pretty easy and everything is well-organized. I'd be willing to bet your puppy would be so happy if you get this book. ... show more

  • Jam-packed with recipes and useful info
My puppy is a very finicky eater. We have tried many different brands of store-bought dog food, and she likes a few, but I was worried she wasn't getting the correct nutrition. I was considering cooking homemade meals for her, but I had no idea where to start. This book was a lifesaver in that regard. There is detailed info on dog nutrition, tons of recipes, and structured meal plans for dogs of all kinds. Meal plans tailored to size, activity level, and lifestyle were beneficial. Info on adjusting plans over time as dogs age will serve me well into the future. I learned that organ meats are great for dogs. The book covers preparation, storage techniques, and more. Ultimately, a list of vet-approved tools and supplements is provided to ensure your dog receives all the necessary vitamins. Highly recommend for anyone considering cooking for their dog. ... show more

  • Trustworthy, comprehensive, flexible and adaptable! Trustworthy, comprehensive, flexible and adaptable!
Wow! This book is going to be invaluable to me. After my previous dog struggled with health issues all of his 16 years, I was determined to do what I can to help our current dog. We adopted him from a rescue when he was only 3 months old, he had been abandoned in a box in a store with severe mange. We were able to easily treat the mange. He is such a great dog, they really missed out when they abandoned him! I always buy the highest quality commercial dog food I can find, avoiding the cheap fillers and such, but nevertheless, Walter developed allergies when he was about 18 months old, with a terrible rash on his "under carriage". His immune system probably took a hit from having mange at such a young age. His vet started him out on Apoquel, which helped initially, but after a few years, it was no longer effective. Then we moved on to Cytopoint injections, and he really responded well to that. Walter, now 9 years old, started to respond less and less to Cytopoint as well. I revamped his entire food, eliminated any things that can usually be contributing to allergies, such as chicken and beef. Without expensive testing, it is difficult to know what specifically might work for him or not. After eliminating certain food ingredients, I did notice that now I can go longer between shots, and only do a medicated shampoo once a week or every other week instead. So food definitely has a role in his allergies. Lately I have been focusing more on wanting to make my own dog food, but I just couldn't find a good and TRUSTWORTHY source with information AND recipes. I want to do this, but I want to do it correctly. This is the book! I am so happy and excited to have found it. I just got it today and scanned through all the pages; this is perfect, exactly what I needed. I love that it goes into the details I have myself wondered and worried about, such as supplements (and recommendations for those), food safety, how to properly store the food, how you can easily adapt and change recipes up. This is a very comprehensive book, and I feel it is trustworthy since Dr Reed knows what she is talking about. If you have been thinking about making your own dog food, but feel unsure, this book is for you (and your pup, of course!). ... show more
