  • Great Book
The illustrations are great, and it's cool to see the entire process of the movie Zootopia!

  • LOVE THIS BOOK
Full of wonderful art. What I love most about this movie is the world building. It's so creative an colorful! The art shows you all the little details and even some super interesting scrapped content. Definitely add this to your collection!

  • Love it for the character design!
This art book really devotes itself towards the character design in the movie. There are many pages that show how many different iterations the main characters went through (+ fun facial expressions) before becoming the Judy and Nick we know, and sketches of background characters used to flesh out the environment they live in. It was a breath of fresh air to see that they didn't focus on any 3D modeling within this art book and solely used 2D art. There is also lot of written information that eludes to earlier scrapped ideas within the story. Overall, it is a great art book, especially for people looking to become a character designer. ... show more

  • Absolutely Fantastic
As a precursor, this review is of the hardcover version of the book. This book is absolutely fantastic. Taking a look at the preview on Amazon, I was expecting something fairly good, but I was astounded at the content within the book when I received it. The images are beautiful and there is a lot more in the book than simple concept drawings of the movie. There's everything from different city designs for the different types of animals, to vehicles, rooms, and appliances. It really gives you the appreciation as to how much thought really went into the different environments within the movie, and there are a lot of things in there that did not make it to the movie. There's also plenty of text describing the thought process behind the different items within the movie, which flushes out the book to be more than just art. It contains a lot of the thought processes themselves behind different regions and choices made within the movie. Overall, this book has a lot more than I had expected when I had originally purchased it, compared to similar art books that I've purchased in the past. This book had everything I was hoping for from the content of the movie, and plenty more. I would highly recommend this book, even if you're only looking for the art itself. ... show more

  • One of Disney's best artbooks for one of Disney's best movies!
I've been buying and selling these behind-the-scenes art books for over ten years, and this is one of my favorites yet! Ms. Julius offers insightful quotes and interviews from production staff accompanied by tremendously entertaining artwork created over the course of the film's development. Zootopia is a fantastic film with a thoughtful script, some of the best casting for an animation I've seen in recent years (Bateman and Simmons were inspired!) and, par for the course on Disney's part, some really breathtaking art and design. The "Art of" books have always given valuable insight into the processes of developing these rich and imaginative worlds, but "Art of Zootopia" is one of the few I've seen that includes a large proportion of annotated drawings with notes made by the directing staff for internal use by the animators. Reading these annotations almost makes you feel like you're part of an animation workshop or something--great motivation for little ones (or big ones!) interested in animation or creative design as a career. I recommend seeing the movie prior to reading this book, since it does spoil the ending. But there's every chance that reading it will make you want to see the film again (if you didn't want to already)! ... show more

  • Beautiful artwork of and creator insight into a brilliant movie
A TON a concept art, illustrations, and commentary from the art team behind Zootopia. This is my absolute favorite movie since Despicable Me, which is the only other movie I've gone to theaters more than once to see, and even then, I only went back once. I've seen Zootopia 5 times, twice in IMAX 3D, once in RPX. Clearly, the content of the book was enough for me to justify purchasing it. The book itself feels sturdy, with an attractive but plain solid green hardcover, with a "Disney's Zootopia" logo recessed into the front cover. The book's paper sleeve is in a slightly matted finish, on heavy paper. The pages of the book are printed on paper which is almost as heavy as the cover sleeve. The images are rendered in beautiful detail, and the semi-gloss finish helps the colours show vividly. If you loved Zootopia and want to see more of the environment, and gain more insight into the thought process that went into the art and stylistic choices, you'll absolutely love this book. If you did not love/have not seen Zootopia but appreciate beautiful artwork, you will also love this book. ... show more

  • Creatures and crime!
Taken a break from novels, I switched to some art production. I enjoyed this book and the movie it accumulated into. The world of these animals is diverse and feels alive. Yet it also tackles the idea of prejudices shifting in the underbelly of this vibrant city. Altogether it makes for a great, buddy detective story that touches a bit on crime noir as well. I always love looking at the concept design and storyboards as I feel partial to that pre-production work. I only wish there was even more shown of earlier character development work for secondary characters, too. I loved seeing pieces that were cut, but could have been in the movie as well. Those examples being Koslov and Morris, the Meadowlands (Biker and trucker sheep galore!), Honey Badger's bigger role, and Nick's Wild Times Club. So much that can be explored in this city. Yet it's condensed down well to suit the film, and not give away away too much. Despite streamlining it, it's still a worthy read and art viewing book that displays the dedication the artists put into such a detailed work. ... show more
