Frequently asked questions

The Thames & Kosmos Tumbling Hedgehog is suitable for kids aged 7 and up. It's designed to be an educational toy that introduces young learners to basic engineering and robotics concepts, making it perfect for this age range.

No, you do not need to buy any extra parts or tools. The Thames & Kosmos Tumbling Hedgehog comes with all the necessary components for assembly. However, you may need to have screwdrivers and batteries handy, as these are often required for assembly but not included in the kit.

The sound activation feature on the Tumbling Hedgehog allows it to respond to different sound cues, such as claps or shouts. Once it hears a sound, the Hedgehog will begin to tumble, roll, or scurry around. This feature is a great way to engage kids in learning about sound sensors and basic robotics.

While the Tumbling Hedgehog does have pre-set behaviors related to its sound activation feature, it does not support custom programming or behavior modification. The main educational value lies in the hands-on experience of building and understanding how its mechanisms work in response to sound stimuli.

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Hedgehog Rolling Robot is a complex and engineering-focused toy that requires significant assembly time, often deemed too complicated for younger children without adult help. While some have found the assembly process and the toy's functionality enjoyable and educational, others report durability issues and challenges with the toy responding to controls as expected. This toy seems to best suit older children or adults with a keen interest in engineering and assembly, offering a mixture of creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on building experience.

Pros

  • 🔧 Offers a creative and engaging STEM learning experience
  • 👪 Encourages collaboration between children and adults
  • ✨ Parts replacement and customer service are prompt and efficient
  • 🎁 Brings joy and a sense of accomplishment once assembled

Cons

  • ❗Highly complex assembly not suitable for younger children without adult assistance
  • 🛠️ Durability issues with parts breaking easily or not fitting properly
  • 🔇 Sometimes fails to respond to clap commands as expected
  • 😞 Some find the assembly process tedious and not worth the effort

Should I Buy It?

If you are looking for a challenging and engaging STEM project that offers hands-on building and problem-solving opportunities, and you have the patience for a complex assembly, this could be a rewarding purchase. However, if you are seeking a toy with immediate playability out of the box, or are purchasing for younger children hoping for an independent building experience, you might want to consider other options.

  • Tedious but Fun
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my barely 6 year old son and it definitely requires an adult for assistance. The box states 7-10 might need help and 10+ should be okay.

  • Prepare to invest a LOT of time assembling
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
Theoretically this hedgehog would be a great learning experience and fun to use. Honestly, I have to say I don't see any child, let alone a 7 year old having the patience to assemble this hedgehog. Not only do you have to remove the pieces (172!) from the holders BUT you have to file the rough edges off each piece from where they were molded onto the forms to get a good fit. It's a slow painful task. The 8 year old lost interest within 5 minutes. It, literally, took 4 days of working on it to get it assembled. That was multiple and/or several hours each day! We figured it took at least 15 hours for assembly what with the filing. We stuck with it as the younger kids were excited about seeing it work. Unfortunately......yup, there's an very ugly down side after all those hours; the hedgehog doesn't work right. It comes on but it definitely does not roll, move around, or perform as advertised. It curled into a ball; an impregnable ball at that. Back to the drawing board so to speak. Got it unrolled but the eyes are still flashing that something is wrong. Now it went in a circle, went forward a few feet, backed up and then did a possum impression. Yup, it tried to roll over but fell over on it's side. It still powers up but it may as well be dead. I can honestly say I do not recommend this robotic hedgehog. Plus, it's completely plastic, so longevity isn't/wasn't in it's future. Also, you can only pick it up a certain way without compromising the assembly. Not really practical for children to remember each time & if the younger kids get to it.......hmmmmm. And beware if a kid sticks their fingers into the hedgehog if it's curled up. They will get hurt. We'll take one more look at the assembly but if it won't work I'm contacting Amazon as it's either defective or we aren't smart enough for a 7 year olds toy. As we have a toy channel and have tested, literally, hundreds of toys, robots, vehicles, etc. I'm betting it's the former. I'm not willing to exchange it & put in all those hours assembling to find out though. ... show more

  • any child should be able to put this together
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
my son 9 years old received it at 6pm on 3-31-20. it is put together in less than 2 hours. he loved the challenge of the build. i ( his father) did not help him build it. he did that on his own. instructions are easy to read, and simple to put together. " this takes attention to detail and patience/focus" I was looking for something for my child to do while home from the pandemic. note: the first package they sent the battery pack was damaged. they sent a new product out in days. thank you for your fast response. ... show more

  • Customer Service is spectacular
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
Came missing parts so my son sent me the ones needed and the company sent them pronto. All was a relief as you cannot put it together without the parts. It is not really for younger children unless an enthusiastic adult helps. It is a bit complicated.

  • Got one day of play
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
So this was extremely complicated to put together theres no way an elementary aged child is putting this together with any level of independence. It worked great for less than 24 hours and now is broken and won't work. My son is now devastated since this was his gift from Santa and it took a month of weekends to assemble. ... show more

  • Nice toy but breaks easy
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
Bought as a gift for my daughter, she was so excited. After spending over an hour to build it, she finally got to play with it. Not the easiest control, you clap to make it work. After the first day the peg that holds the gear that drives the wheels broke. Now I spent a hour trying to find a way to fix it then the button that turns it on and off isn't working right. Daughter isn't happy with it anymore because it keeps breaking. If it would work without breaking it would be a great toy but as is, it is only ok. ... show more
