  • We wanted to love it...
Style: Candy Claw Machine
This was a Christmas gift for my 7 (soon to be 8) year old. He was excited to get it but disappointed on how complicated it was. His dad was the main assembler for the toy. The pieces aren't the best quality and it has some steps which are tricky to assemble. It took approximately 6 hours to complete (spread out in days to take breaks from it) and when it was FINALLY assembled it broke. We were very disappointed. We were only able to get 1 play from it before it broke and the claw didn't do a good job at grabbing. If production ups the quality of the parts this could be a great toy. Overall, we do not recommend... unless you want to teach about patience and disappointment. ... show more

  • Not for a Child to Build and Does Not Work
Style: Candy Claw Machine
UPDATE AS OF 8-23-23 - Despite the issues noted below, I wanted to share the fact that this company is excellent to deal with. As noted below, they were responsive in providing replacement parts in the hopes that the original toy would finally work as advertised. However, when this was not the case, they immediately replied to my follow-up email message about the situation with an offer to replace the toy with a different STEM project. The new toy arrived yesterday and, we hope, will be one that can be enjoyed by our granddaughter. In a time when many companies are hard to reach out to and, then, even harder to get service from, Thames & Kosmos is a stand-out in excellent customer service. I purchased this as a gift for our 9-year old granddaughter who is in love with claw machines at the arcade. Needless to say, she was very excited to see the gift - the image was great and the idea of a candy machine inviting - and, as well, for the opportunity to build it with me. Soon thereafter we got together to build the toy. Although the instructions indicate that it would have been age-appropriate for her, and that it would take 2-3 hours, it took longer and was much more complicated than presented. That, however, was the good part. After assembling the machine, we tried to prime the hydraulics with water. One of the two filled nearly completely - the second one barely so. Despite this, the hydraulics seemed to work - that is until one of the cylinders inside the unit started to drain the water. So, being a good sport, my granddaughter agreed that I should contact the company to get help and/or replacement parts. The company was very helpful: promptly replying to my email and subsequently sending replacement parts for the hydraulic sections of the toy. So, a week or so later we met again to make a second attempt to get the toy working. This time I was meticulously careful in executing the instructions. And, after charging the system with water, proceeded to have her run a test. First issue - the hydraulics did not have enough force on the claws to pick up any of the candy items. The second problem - after the 2nd or 3rd attempt at using the toy, the cylinder that opens/closes the claw began to leak. Slower this time than after our first attempt, but still was not watertight. Bottom line: It is a very attractive and well-designed STEM toy. However, since we could not get it to come even close to the stated operation after two attempts, it surely is not a toy for an 8-9 year-old and, as I was involved, not even for a handy adult. ... show more

  • Great for education, not good on function
Style: Candy Claw Machine
This machine won't work that well after it's put together but the journey in the assembly is worth the price. You'll have to go through hydraulics, displacement, gear ratios and other engineering subjects with your kids to explain how it works. You'll also have to guide them because this machine is far beyond their ken. I liked this item, it was frustrating but the satisfaction of seeing my kid playing with it and explaining how it works to her grandparents made me a Thames and Kosmos fan. ... show more

  • Doesn't actually work
Style: Mechanical Engineering
Got this set for my son who loves building things and learning about science and engineering. We've done the first 2 projects so far, which have resulted in cool looking robotic arms. For some reason, the hydraulic pump system simply doesn't work. Can't get the robotic grabber to actually grab anything. Which kind of detracts from the point of this thing. Isn't it supposed to demonstrate concepts of mechanical engineering, using air pressure to perform work? Well, despite following the instructions, the end product doesn't do that very well. It's just a cool looking glorified Lego thingy and kind of a disappointment. I don't think I'll be getting anymore of their engineering sets that involve moving parts. ... show more

  • Be Prepared…
Style: Candy Claw Machine
The directions could be clearer and pictures with more details would have been nice but if you have the patience to help your 8 year old stick with it for 3+ hours while also not yelling at your husband when shows up half through and tries take over without reading the instructions, then it’s fine. 4 stars. ... show more

  • Cheap plastic
Style: Candy Claw Machine
We bought this for my son and while the concept is good, some of the plastic pieces are very poor quality and break easily.

  • Hard to Assemble
Style: Candy Claw Machine
I bought this thinking it would be fun for the kids to put their candy from the holidays in. We like putting things together so that was something that caught my attention when I saw it. The kids quickly became bored during assembly. The hardest part was trying to get water in the tubes. No matter how long or how hard I tried I could not get enough water in them. I continued to put it together anyway. I tried it out after I had the grabber and everything hooked up and it worked a little. It did spit some water out all over the bottom and grabbed would not close all the way. Then after a few minutes it just stopped. The grabber would not close at all. The directions say to unhook the tubes to put more water in. I could have tried that except I couldn't get the tubes unhooked to do it. I decided it was too much work for my kids to have a claw machine. Took it apart the best I could to fit it back in the box and returned it. If you have tons of patience then this is for you. But if not, then I recommend spending a little more for one that comes with less frustration. ... show more

  • Below quality hydraulic tube
Style: Candy Claw Machine
Was disappointed that the hydraulic tube did not work. One did the other did not. Without the hydraulics working the machine is useless and very disappointing to my child at the end. Would not recommend.
