  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Great affordable option
This bag is great for someone who is new to the camping scene and looking to make a light investment. The price of the bag is great! The amount of storage space is great for someone planning a week long trip. The quality of the bag is great for what you’re paying. The material is nice and easy to clean. Remember if you want something if luxury, you need to pay a luxury price. This is perfect for first time backpacking or camping. The padding on the hip band was comfortable and all the straps were easy to adjust. I am extremely happy with this purchase and would recommend it 100% ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Extra thick padding on waist strap is a game changer on long hikes.
The extra thick padding on the waist strap is what makes this pack great. My friend has an Osprey and he wishes he had this much padding. Plus it has a built in rain cover. Everything else…..pockets, capacity, etc. are what you would find on any pack. Buy this very good economical pack and spend what you save on a good sleeping pad. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Quality and Functionality
I received my Explorer 4000 backpack yesterday. I have it all packed up today so I have had a chance to go through it and have my initial impression. I will add another review after my initial hike. First, I inspected the pack to make sure there were no defects. It appears to be in perfect condition, all stitching and zippers look good. The only problem I can see is that the top outer drawstring clasp doesn't grab. The inner one does though, so that doesn't really impact the performance. Also, the sleeping bag compartment is small and doesn't fit my bag unless I really cram it in there. So I unzipped the inner sleeping bag compartment and put my bag in through the top. Problem solved. Those are my only negative comments so far. I was easily able to adjust the straps and belt and set it for large, and the pack fits me perfectly. I walked around in it and the pack is quiet (I saw a couple of reviews where they complained about noise, which may happen when set to X-Large or bigger.) So completely packed and with a couple of liters of water, but without food, the pack and contents weigh 23 lbs. I have about 700 in3 for food. So I'm figuring I could probably pack enough food for 5 days/nights. Overall this is a good quality and comfortable pack, especially for the money. I would have given it 5 stars but for the two negative comments above. I'm happy with it and would recommend it. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars I want to start with how AWESOME Teton sports customer service is
**Update 11/9/2018** The more I get to use this pack the more I like it. The stays are easily shaped to your back (aluminum I believe) and hold that shape well. I have since swapped out my 40 degree bag for a 20 degree mummy style bag. That DID take the ENTIRE bag compartment, and in turn I had to move all my other gear around and pack it differently. Still to me a non issue. I have it loaded (full weight including food and water) to about 35 pounds. That is including a few luxury items. The weight rides great, and even with the tent strapped to the outside it feels OK to me. Again like someone else mentioned, its really in how you pack your bag. The torso adjustment is easy to figure out (its just a hook and loop system) and it stays in place when you get it done where you want it. If I had to say anything that I am not a fan of, it would have to be the pockets on the sides. At first I liked having pockets split up for organization purposes but now, it seems to be more....fiddly... for lack of a better term. Right now I just use the lower of the two pockets to hold a couple of water bags collapsed. Also maybe the inclusion of some belt pockets would be cool, but for the cost of this model I still love it. Still I think you can't go wrong with a pack like this. Original review below Grab a drink this review is a bit lengthy. I want to start with how AWESOME Teton sports customer service is. When my bag arrived it had a tear on the shoulder straps/yoke-harness. It was right where the height adjustment was located. I contacted Teton about a day after I received the pack and had a chance to inspect it. That was on a weekend. At the beginning of the week I heard back from them requesting just a bit more info and within a week or so I received a new shoulder strap. Things happen, that could have been just a simple oversight. The rest of the pack was rock solid. Now speaking of the pack... This pack is awesome. I got this so I could stop relying on a generic "3 day pack"; that I used for overnight camping without much hiking and that was good for the money, but had its fair share of fit and finish issues. Plus weight distribution was just terrible. No frame and I could tell it just wasn't going to be anything I wanted to carry on any future serious hike. This pack on the other hand is great. Holds an amazing amount of supplies, and the sleeping bag area fits my 40 degree bag (really, really, really scrunched up -probably not good for the filling, oh well) a camp pillow, a bag liner, a medium size first aid kit that has more heavy use/major injury stuff (my boo boo kit is in my pocket), a small Gerber Gorge folding shovel, and tent stakes. The weight distribution with this pack and a lot of packs this style ultimately depends on how you pack your bag. However with the two frame rods supporting the back, and the design packing this thing and feeling balanced is easy. I have 2-3 days worth of food and 3.5 liters of water in it and the pouches along with a 2 person backpacking tent, a change of clothes, and other small items that I wanted to add. I still have enough space to stuff a rain coat if I wanted to, or more food. I have it weighing in around 35 pounds (including water and food). It fits fantastic, rides fantastic, and overall impresses the heck outta me. I want to say that this is my first true hiking backpack, but I am pleased with it. Plus at the price......its a freaking steal. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price (explorer 4000)
It would be hard to find a better value for a pack this large but it does have a few issues. The netted pockets on the sides are too small to hold most water bottles. The zipped side pockets interfere with the netted pockets and there are no internal pockets at all. No hip belt pockets. The brain does not unattach from the pack but does have 2 large zippered compartments. That said it does have good adjustments and is fairly comfortable. All the zippers and stitching seem fine so far. The rain cover is fine as long as you have nothing hanging externally on the pack. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Pocket size
So far the only thing I can find is that the pocket that your sleeping bag goes into is alittle small.
