  • A decent to good high value sound system, but with noticeable flaws (for me at least).
Pros: relatively high value for the capabilities you get at the price. Cons/Flaws: 1) Lip sync, the correlation between the video and audio playing together, is slightly off with a slight audio delay. 2) Dolby 5.1 processing is either lacking or not very good when using 'optical' input. First off, I needed a sound bar for an older Plasma TV. As most know, the industry no longer produces plasma TVs (since 2014) even though plasma still produces the best picture quality of any Hi Def screens beside the very expensive OLED TVs. Imagine if they had stuck with plasma technology , we all would be enjoying even better pic quality and lower prices than we are now! Anyway, rant over. The reason I mention the plasma TV is because of its age, I don't have it set up for wifi even though it is technically capable. Because of that, I could not upgrade the firmware on this soundbar while speaking with tech support. The technician claims that may have solved the issues/flaws, but who really knows. So my problems with this sound bar might not be applicable for everyone. The biggest issue was with the lip sync. There is a slight, but noticeable delay with the audio coming from this soundbar even with it on its fastest setting. The remote does allow you to alter lip sync, but even the fastest setting resulted in a delay. TCL even mentions this in the instruction booklet, which makes me think they are aware of the possible problem with some TVs. Using HDMI ARC helped some to the point that many people would not notice or care about the delay. But, I specifically want to use this sound bar with the optical input, because the TV I'm using it on actually has decent speakers on its own, so the combination of using both the TV speakers (at lower volume) and a sound bar provides a richer experience and enhances the surround sound effect. I usually set up all but the highest range theater sound systems like this. Doing so with this unit results in the TV speakers always being ahead of the soundbar speakers with both using the same source. This brings me to my second, significant enough, issue with this system. The Dolby 5.1 processing on this unit is either not available or seriously lacking feature on this soundbar. I played with the settings and just could not get it to sound great. Now this unit is not a true 5.1 channel soundbar (for that you would need 2 extra speakers that usually go behind the listeners), and given the price you wouldn't expect it to be. But, most soundbars (2.0 to 3.1) in this price range still process Dolby 5.1 encoding, which many devices use like your cable box, to produce a 'simulated' or fake surround sound effect. This unit just didn't process certain sounds on the 5.1 setting coming from the source (cable box). You probably wouldn't notice this unless you're watching a high action impact movie or something similar, which was the case with me. Then if you switch the setting to PCM instead of Dolby 5.1, you hear the sounds you were missing, yet the basic sound quality goes down dramatically. This was the case when using HDMI Arc as well. So because of these 2 issues I had to return this unit. ... show more

  • Good gamble on a "renewed" device
I gambled on a “renewed” unit and for the most part it has paid off. After shooting pics of the damaged box caused by FedEx (have no idea why any company uses them) I opened the box that had been carelessly tossed in my driveway. The unit has a few warts and is clearly not new, but that is to be expected with a renewed device. There are a few dings on the sub, but due to the positioning of the sub in my room, they are not visible. I cannot say for certain if the dings are due to the renewed aspect of the product or rather caused by the top tier FedEx delivery. The sound bar itself was fine and the dings on the sub do not impact its function in any way. This is the third sound bar I have tried on my Samsung TV utilizing the ARC HDMI port and the first that has truly worked as expected. This even includes a Samsung branded sound bar ☹. The beauty of this connection is that you don’t need to manage two remotes. The volume buttons on your TV remote will simply manage the output from the sound bar. The bar will sense the TV being powered on and turn itself on and off accordingly. I will say the sub and the bar did not pair out of the box as suggested in the setup guide. The box included only a quick setup guide and not the full user manual, so I had to download a copy from the TCL website to learn how to manually pair the sub and bar. After several failed attempts at manually pairing the devices, I simply unplugged the two for several minutes. After that I powered on the sub first and had it in pairing mode before powering up the bar. This seemed to do the trick and they have worked in unison since. The sound quality is superior to other sub/bar kits I’ve used. This is expected for a device that, if not renewed, would have cost more than twice that of the others. It has several configurations to choose from for dialing in your desired audio experience. The volume levels nicely from TV station to station without getting louder or quieter like some other bars have done. Utilizing the Bluetooth mode, I was able to easily pair my phone and stream Spotify through bar. The sound quality is surprisingly good for a simple sound bar and BT sub. All said, I’m pleased with my purchase so far. If my experience changes in the future I will update this review. ... show more
