I was looking for a nylon string guitar with a narrower neck than a classical, and found it in this Taylor hybrid. I appreciate the tone, with the Lutz spruce bringing out more mid-tones than Sitka.     • Nice guitar!
I purchased this guitar as a retirement gift for my wife. She is a classically-trained violinist and has talked for years about wanting to learn to play "classical guitar." I play drums in a rock band and asked my band mates for recommendations. They all said this would be a very good choice. Yes, there are less expensive "beginner" guitars, but this one seems to be a "serious instrument." Since she's an accomplished musician already, I knew a "cheap" beginner guitar wouldn't fit the bill. She is very pleased with it and has taken to playing it like a duck to water! (I knew she would.) She plays it multiple hours each day. (Really, she does!) She has commented numerous times about the quality of the tone/sound. (Don't ask me...I'm just a drummer...but it sounds pretty good as far as I can tell!) This guitar is really just for her enjoyment...I don't think she'll start playing concerts or anything. Even so, she has a critical ear and I know she'd be frustrated if it wasn't "up to snuff." But, so far at least, she seems to be very, very happy with this guitar. ... show more

Bought this from a different reputable dealer brand NEW. Upon my receipt and inspection, guitar had been previously repaired and had a 1x1” patch inside the bottom back wood. That, along with a clump of glue. In addition, the wood by the top of the bridge was slightly cracked. Playing also produced an interior vibration that seemed to point to additional unseen defects. Absolute garbage. You can expect something like this from a $20 garage sale guitar but for a $700 Taylor?!? Horrible. ... show more

    • A really fine guitar, with quality built in
I have owned this for about a month now and I love it. It is a smaller classical acoustical guitar for those that find the neck of most classical guitars too big. It is delivered with slack nylon strings so for the first few weeks you have to tune it pretty much every time you play it - but this is normal until the guitar becomes acclimated. This guitar is well worth the price, since Taylor’s are really expensive and this is an entry level that almost any one can use, including a professional. It has a very nice tone, even though the wood is not rosewood. You can find You Tube videos for this guitar that demonstrate the wonderful sound. The condition of delivery was perfect in every way - right out of the soft case it was playable (with tuning first). I really like the smaller body on this guitar and the arm rest for the right arm. I know that for the price you can’t get everything you would for the more expensive guitars but I would have liked a hard case and a protector around the hole where your right hand rests on the guitar. But I am so pleased with this purchase. If there wasn’t coronavirus to worry about I might have gone to a music store, but I did price it etc at two music stores and Amazon’s deal was as good as any and delivered from Chicago in 4 days time. ... show more

    • Terrific Instrument, Great Value!
Unlike other reviewers, my experience with the Academy 12e-n has been nothing but a joy. It plays like my trusty Taylor 410; i.e., easy action, no buzz or string bounce even when capo’d high on the neck. It plays true all the way up the neck, with or without capo and it stays tuned. It can be played hard or with subtlety, and it sounds terrific amped or un-amped. Un-amped, it projects surprisingly well for its size. Hammers, pulls and slides are clear and crisp. Touch and false harmonics ring clean and true. Appearance-wise, fit and finish are perfect. In other words, it’s everything I’d expect of a Taylor. Wanted a decent nylon strung guitar to replace a cheap old beater but didn’t want to spend a fortune. Boy, was I surprised at the quality given the relatively low price. Love my 12e-n and sorry to hear that other folks have had a less satisfactory experience. ... show more

I am a beginner on guitar, but my ear is trained from past experience with other instruments. I bought this guitar from a physical dealer after spending a day playing every classical guitar i could find in multiple shops around town. This guitar's tone stood WAY out from all the rest. It was also perfectly in tune with itself (playing the same note on different strings and octaves) and perfectly straight as far as i could tell. The sound is simply beautiful. Great reviews and nice tone—except the high e string has an annoying squeak when plucked up. This is not typical string squeal from sliding up and down the fretboard. I will probably return it if the guitar tech can’t fix it. I bought this without playing it - big mistake - relying too much on Taylor’s branding. ... show more
