  • Fantastic Bag. So so so so much to love about it.
Style: Anvil 17
I have different photo backpacks for different purposes. My most used bag until now was the erstwhile tamrac expedition 5. Its the bag I bring to on location photo shoots. I typically need to pack two dslr bodies (5Dii and 5diii) along with the 70-200 lens and the 24-105 as well as the usual assortment of small accessories (cf cards, batteries, business cards, etc etc. This all fit okay, but not great and usually I wanted to bring a speedlite or another niche lens and other larger accessories. I had been holding off purchasing a new bigger bag because I was trying to be less self indulgent. It worked for a couple of years but finally I couldn't take it anymore and I began shopping for a bag that would give me greater flexibility when I was shooting away from the studio. I looked at all the usual bag makers and some lesser known as well. I was reluctant to purchase this one because it is so new. I hemmed and hawed over it, making myself nuts. The only review when I was purchasing it had given it three stars. I finally decided that amazon's amazing return possible was a good enough reason to buy the bag, test it out and see if I wanted to keep it. Okay, enough with my preamble.... this bag is OUTSTANDING. So incredibly well designed and meticulously crafted. The engineers at Tamrac have achieved an incredible balance between lightness and durability. This bag is so lightweight that when I fill it with gear I don't feel like I am breaking my back. Now, instead of just the two bodies and two lenses, I typically have three or four lenses and a speedlite or two along with accessories. And there is still room for more. As with any camera bag you are going to have to get creative with the dividers and the placement of your equipment. One of the things that was important to me with this purchase was the ability to stand lenses up between the dividers. My old bag was too short front to back to have them standing up. This bag handles the 24-105 standing perfectly. I do not have a grip on either of my cameras so the depth of this bag is a bit much for the cameras but I don't at all have the sense that they aren't seated securely. It's a matter of getting dividers and elastic velcro straps positioned creatively. When I have the 70-200 on the 5Diii, there is a fair amount of wiggle room down the middle of the bag. But between the velcro straps and the dividers, keeping the camera and lens in place is really not an issue. Seriously I can't imagine anyone with any combination of DSLR and lenses not being able to use this bag and use it well. It's just that good. My laptop is small (surface pro 3) so the nicely padded laptop compartment easily fits it. From Tamrac's website I read that it fits most 15 inch laptops. The front pockets are great. I like the way they open, and like that there are pockets inside. There are just so many ways to organize the smaller things I bring with me. Inside there are three more plastic pockets for more organization. The waist belt is intense.... very seriously made and quite comfortable. But I don't hike with the bag so I don't usually need a waist belt so I was happy to see that it is removable. It isn't altogether easy to remove because the velcro that holds it in place fights hard to hang on to it, but I was eventually able to wrestle it free. I seriously doubt if I will ever use it but honestly if you are hiking with this bag that belt is going to be your best friend. I don't want to go on and on but suffice it to say that this bag is HUGELY customizable. And if it doesn't come with everything you need, there are velcro accessories that attach to the outside of the bag. I'm kind of hankering for the water bottle holder although at the moment the bottom front pocket is holding my poland spring bottle. When I need that pocket for my tripod I'll have to find something else for my water and I might get the tamrac water bottle attachment (which at the moment is sold out everywhere). Anyway, to conclude, I think this bag is the perfect combination of fantastic features. I can't really imagine a better bag for my purposes. Well, maybe I would like a few more pockets but I am a bit of a pocket freak. The average photographer is going to be happy with the pockets on this bag. If you have any questions, please ask. I'll write back, I promise. BOTTOM LINE: Great bag. Super LIGHTWEIGHT but DURABLE. Highly customizable. Holds a lot in a relatively small space. Very versatile and a most reasonable price as far as bags go. ... show more

  • The best photo backpack I've found so far
Style: Anvil Slim 11
Like most photographers, I've owned a wide variety of backpacks and bags over the years, always searching for the perfect one. While perfection is elusive, this the the closest thing I've found in a backpack, and it's currently my favorite bag. Of course, what works for me may not work for you, but here's what makes this bag stand out for me: -Quality construction. The pack is well built (as I'd expect from Tamrac) with thoughtful touches like corded zipper pulls and a sturdy grab handle on top. -Comfortable to carry. The straps comfortably distribute weight across the shoulders, and the waist belt can be removed if (like me) you prefer to be without it. If you do like to use the waist strap, you'll find this one is wide and well padded. I'd be comfortable wearing it on long hikes, but for day-to-day use I rarely want it so it's nice to be able to leave the extra bulk behind. -Thoughtful Tripod Carry System. If you carry a tripod regularly, you may be initially put off by the somewhat unusual configuration, but after getting used to it I've found it superior to anything else I've used. The large bottom pocket doubles as a foothold for the tripod, meaning your not going to want to carry small items in that pocket while you're carrying a tripod. I haven't found this to be a huge sacrifice. The advantage is that you have abundant space to anchor your tripod's feet. It's easy to fit two of the legs into the pocket to keep the tripod stable - none of the wobbling around you get when the tripod is hanging on by a single foot in one of those tiny tripod pockets that are typical. Then there are two straps that keep the tripod secured to the front of the bag, and a third strap at the top of the bag that holds the tripod head close to the pack. It's the most secure system I've found on a backpack. -Space. The "slim" designation in the name means the bag is only about 4 inches deep, so it's not ideal if you're carrying a gripped full frame body (though the bag isn't rigid so you could make it fit). My Canon 5DSR fits comfortably with a bulky L-bracket attached, and there's room inside for an assortment of lenses. I've currently got mine loaded with the 5DSR, a 70-200mm f2.8, 11-24mm f4, a Tamron 150-600mm, and a 50mm. The bag is tall enough to accommodate the 5DSR with the Tamron 150-600mm attached. There's also room for a 15" laptop in the front compartment. I do have a few minor issues with the bag. Since the it opens in the front, you'll need to release the top tripod strap before opening it when you're carrying a tripod. It also means you need to set the bag down on it's back to open (on the side that you'll later have against your body) which is less than ideal if you don't have a clean place to put the bag down. The mesh padding on the back, which helps keeps you cool when you're carrying it, tends to pick up sand like a sponge if you put the bag down at the beach. It cleans up easy enough, but it's worth noting if you're a regular beach-goer. If you want a low-profile backpack, need to carry a pretty complete selection of lenses, and don't need to carry a gripped body, this is one of the best choices out there. ... show more

  • A good travel companion for trips where taking photos is serious business
Style: Anvil Slim 11
I would have rated it a perfect 5-star if not because that it does not have a side net pocket for holding water bottle, that my old Tamrac bag has. Other than that, it's a worthy upgrade from my old Tamrac bag that I have been using for last 10 years and still solid. The main reasons for my upgrade: 1) It has a strap to allow me carry a tripod around which my old bag does not have. 2) It can accommodate two d-SLR cameras, bodies and two lenses each. The main compartment is easily configurable to adjust to the size of lens and cameras. 3) It has waist strap that looks bulky but it helps distribute the weight to make you feel not heavily loaded. Tamrac is known for its solid build and durability, and this one is no exception. Feel very solid and can last forever. Only wish there is a side net bottle holder. Or is there an accessory I can buy to attach to it? ... show more
