Description

Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Esther Williams find romance, gangsters and lots of song and dance on the baseball diamond in the fast-paced, fun-filled musical romp Take Me Out to the Ball Game.1906. The champion ball club The Wolves' success depends on the powerhouse double play combination of O'Brien to Ryan to Goldberg. Trouble is O'Brien (Kelly--An American in Paris, Brigadoon) and Ryan (Academy Award winner Sinatra--From Here to Eternity, Pal Joey) would rather be pursuing their vaudeville career than playing baseball . . . that is until the team gets a new owner, beautiful K.C. Higgins (Williams --Dangerous When Wet). And when a professional gambler who has bet heavily against The Wolves tries every dirty trick he knows to influence the outcome of the big game, it's the baseball players against the gangsters for a wild, hysterical, musical nine innings.

Fantastic movie full of fun, comedy, song and dance. Ok, not Oscar worthy, but who cares. I love the Kelly/Sinatra combo. Betty Garret is hilariously persistent in her pursuit of Sinatra, which is so funny. These old movies just make me smile and ‘Take me out to the Ballgame’ is another one I have and will watch over and over again. ... show more

    • A Fun, light hearted musical
As usual, the Frank Sinatra/Gene Kelly duo makes for another fun and entertaining film. This is a must-have for any collector. Special Features include: two deleted dance numbers, some theatrical trailers, and film notes. That being said, in my own personal opinion, this was my least favorite of the three films they did together. Please don't take that statement as an insult though, I just really enjoyed their other sailor-themed films a lot more. Especially that of "Anchors Aweigh," which had wonderful music, memorable dances, and a little more character depth than this film that I'm rating. If you're new to Kelly-Sinatra films, I would recommend starting with "Anchors Aweigh" or "On The Town" first, but chances are this film will still turn you on to the others because, it too, is a wonderful movie. ... show more

This is lesser known but my absolute favorite of the Frank Sinatra/Gene Kelly movies. I am a HUGE Betty Garret fan and she is at the top of her game in this.

    • A Thoroughly Enjoyable Musical Master Class by Two of the All-Time Greats!!!
Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly, need I say more? If you're a fan of the golden days of big screen musicals, how can you not love watching these two croon and hoof it up on the silver screen? Compare it with some of the junk that fills the megaplex theaters these days and it's like comparing night and day, as this was filmed during a time when there were real stars in Hollywood, men and women who could do it all, sing, dance, act, and even throw in a bit of comedy for good measure. Sinatra's performance of Right Girl For Me really harkens back to a different era in songwriting, one which I wish would make a hasty return. ... show more

Classic Hollywood. Great dancing, singing and some slapstick comedy. A great story line as well. Gene Kelly did an excellent job.

A great musical with plenty of fun and songs. Esther Williams is beautiful and funny. The music andcolor make this a great film. Outstanding cast of players. One other point, I met Frank Sinatra back in the 50;s & we both had the same birthday (ADec12th)

    • A Musical that Doesn't Take Off
I really enjoyed this film for the first forty five minutes. It has great musical numbers with Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Jules Munshin, and Betty Garrett. As I said in the title, the film starts with great energy, and promises a great plot where a baseball team is owned by a woman, and one of its players falls in love with her. The situations between the carefree O'Brien, played by Kelly, and the new female owner, K.C Higgins, played by Esther Williams, promises a good story. And the musical numbers, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," "Yes, Indeedy," "O'Brien to Ryan to Goldberg," "The Right Girl for Me," and "It's Fate Baby, It's Fate" are memorable numbers. However, after these first forty-five minutes, the film has a terrible time in developing a plot. The audience may enjoy more scenes with Sinatra singing romantic songs and Kelly doing his tap-dancing routines, which are great by the way, but it will fail to see the great combination of musical and slapstick comedy witnessed in early team-ups of Kelly and Sinatra in Anchors Aweigh (1945) and On the Town, released a few months earlier that year. An attempt at plot development is made by introducing some kind of gangster, played by Edward Arnold, who wants to make the Olives lose by distracting O'Brien with a vaudeville act in his own clubs. Although the story sounds interesting, it fails to deliver the energy that the film needs to keep itself up. Thus, this is definitely not the best of the Kelly-Sinatra trilogy, and it has the worst ending ever. Nevertheless, I love musicals so I watch the early scenes of the film for its own sake. ... show more
