My stove is 30" wide but the space on top is 28", and there's trim on the ends that is higher than the rest, so a 30" shelf would sit on top of that and the magnets wouldn't make contact. This adjustable shelf fits between the trim pieces and solves that problem. I was concerned that the overlap of the two halves would be at different heights and make the surface uneven. But it's sheet stainless steel so the difference in height is insignificant. Also, it comes with four stick-on magnets that you attach where they are needed after you set the length. I did not know such an item existed. I didn’t realize how much I needed to put a couple items on top of my stove and how annoying it was when they fell off behind the stove. When I was looking for a different kitchen organizer I saw this. The expanding design allows it to fit nicely in the small space On top of the back of my stove. I wish it came in a different color besides black (white? Chrome? Wood look?) but I just love it. Even though there are only 4 small items on it, it eliminates aggravation I’ve had for years. It 'Ill serve it's purpose. Shelf is a little flimsy, but for the cost I expected that. Unbeknownst to me, the back of my stove does have a slight arch to it. A $3.00 package of magnets in various thicknesses solved the problem. Frees up some cabinet space and will prevent stuff from falling behind the stove. My stove has a space behind it I wanted find something to use it for storage for salt and pepper and evoo etc. I have to drill my own holes to fit where studs were and it works.
