  • Very elegant solution for a small buisness or home applications.
Perfect solution for the smaller businesses or home. Gives you a full set of feature once only available to large enterprise without the price tag. Share files on this drive and stop emailing documents to each other. End the nightmare of running around making backups of your workstations, as this will give you network drives for a full set of operating systems. A Linux based operating system gives you high availability and reliability. Some people do well with the 2 bay unit, but going to 4 bays lets you increase your capacity and support more drives. It is cheaper to populate the unit with 4x6TB for a lower price than 2x12TB. This 4 bay unit that will support various flavors of RAID. I run mine with 4 Western Digital Red Pro 6TB 3.5inch 256mb cache operating at 7200 rpm in a RAID 5 configuration netting me 18TB of storage with 6TB of RAID parity backup for a total of 24TB of raw storage. There is a choke point on the gigabit Ethernet port with a published 112 MB/s encrypted sequential reading and writing throughput via the device and your network. For most people however, you will never see it if you don't do huge file transfers often much larger than a PC's hard drive size. Synology has a good suite of apps to tailor your unit to your specific needs. I run an app that lets me run my unit my personal "cloud" and I can access my files remotely, and link them with an app for both the iPhone & Android. it will go to sleep, and spin down the drives when not in use. Reduces the runtime-hours and maximizes the service life. As an IT professional and large campus network engineer, I find it as an elegant small package. For those who don't want to have to constantly pay an IT professional, the beginning user will find Synology's support page sufficient to run the unit. There is a lot of documentation and "how-to" videos out there so you can confidently operate the unit efficiently without too much trouble. Conclusion: I would highly recommend this unit and consider this over the other 2 units. It is a solid item, and will reduce your headache and labor costs. Once you get it set up, it can just go with minimal effort. ... show more

  • a good value NAS
I've had a few synology servers now, and I bought my last one (a 416, which was a 32 bit? and had lower file limits on how much a single volume could handle) RIGHT before they brought out the 64 bit version and had increased the single volume size to over 100TB limit, which was frustrating, so I bought this one a couple years later, and decided to use it in a way to let all of my NAS to work together, this one I picked up to be a synchronized back-up (not the easiest thing to set up with guesswork, but I wanted a fun project). It does work wonders ... I have a couple of Synology NAS (a 213j and the 416 set up for different things), and this one set up with newer, larger drives to let it backup my other NAS fileservers (as I leave them as JBOD NAS servers, and this one as a freestanding backup) automatically. while it has a very versitile arrangement (EXPENSIVE if you want to do video surveilance, as it only has 2 camera licenses included, and $50 a pair afterwords, permanently assigned to the machine, not portable, and no cameras included, just the access licenses... otherwise very easy and versatile), it's able to be many things, that and how it can be easily mapped out as a drive (once properly set-up) for windows, has kept me staying with Synology. the inital setup will take a while (and if you have terrabytes of had drive space, it can take days for the system to inspect the drives initially), but after that it's a matter of how do you want it to be set up, and load the approperiate software. ... show more

  • Excellent for the price
This is just what i have been looking for a personal cloud back up system that is scalable. The OS is full featured and has great apps for backing up phones and computers. Seems like the security is great as well. It soes have a bit of a learning curve to setup and use so if you’re not tech savy be prepared for reading and watching how to videos. ... show more

  • I liked it so much, I bought a second one
So, a year after buying the first, I liked it so much, I bought a second one, because we needed even more capacity on our home network. It's a reliable workhorse, easy to install the drives, easy to set up, easy to connect Windows, Mac or Linux to. The documentation is clear and easy to read. I only ever contacted tech support once, but it was a very positive experience. I've only used a few of the zillions of features it offers, specifically RAID 5 as primary storage, shared user folders, the built-in anti-virus app (looking at the logs made me realize we needed anti-virus on the one Mac in the house), and the $4 exFAT add-on to plug USB drives into the back of it (transferring data off said drives onto NAS). When the time comes, I'll either buy a third one, or start looking at the larger Synology units. I've been very pleased with Synology. ... show more

  • Buy it!
Was in the market for a NAS since FreeNAS didn't work well for what I wanted. After countless hours working on it I gave up and started looking into a Dedicated NAS. I've heard of Synology before on various tech YouTube channels but their hardware is more expensive than some other brands. But at the same time I wanted something that would be reliable and had a built in interface and OS instead of just connecting a box to my router through USB. Tried that in the past and even on USB 3.0 it was painfully slow. So I ended up deciding on this. Wasn't priced too unreasonably and had 4 bays for drives. I'm pretty computer and network savvy but this was so simple to setup that even someone who isn't wouldn't have many problems if any at all. And if they did the Synology tech support is great as I did have to contact them once in regards to an issue that I had which ended up being due to a faulty drive causing problems. I have mine loaded with four 6TB drives and for home use you really can't beat this model. I especially like the fact that even though it's not a high end unit I can still connect my UPS to it and have it shut down if the power goes out to help prevent data loss in that event. I really can't recommend this product enough. ... show more
