  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Inspect for defects
Size: Large Color: Grey Ballistic
The pocket layout on the new ballistic colorway is a definite improvement, but make sure to inspect the stabilizer straps for defects. The stabilizer straps are the small straps with the little arrows on them located at the top of the shoulder straps and their purpose is to keep the elastic from overstretching. If they're too long like the ones shown in the images then they won't be effective. Thankfully they were the correct lengths on the replacement, which is why I suspect it was just a defect and not a design choice. I spotted the defect when comparing it to my old backpack, but you can test for it yourself pretty easily without needing another pack to compare it to. Start by gripping the shoulder strap at either side of the elastic with both hands then pull it tight. If the stabilizer strap fully stretches out like the first ones shown in the attached images, then the strap is the proper length. If there is still a lot of slack remaining on the stabilizer strap however then it's defective and I suggest you return it for a replacement (although it might not be too hard to fix yourself if you know how to sew). Now that I've covered the defect issue, and the reason I'm only giving 4/5 stars, I want to say that I've been very happy overall with this backpack over the past 3 years, but I was never very thrilled with the layout of the interior pockets. I'm glad to report however that they've addressed that issue with the new interior layout on the ballistic version, which is very similar to the limited edition version from 2018 that I missed out on. They've also recently added back the side mesh pocket over the drink compartment. You'll notice it's missing this pocket on the product images, but both packs I received had it, as well the navy blue ballistic version someone else reviewed. Other notable changes is the addition of a document sleeve and a large interior zipper pocket in the main compartment. The adapter pouches were moved to the secondary compartment and placed higher so that they sit above the laptop sleeve. This all results in the backpack being slimmer when fully loaded, and it also makes accessing the main compartment easier. The USB port has also been moved to the side just above the shoe compartment due to the battery pocket being relocated. This is another change I like as well, because the only time I ever used it to charge my phone was when I was sitting down with my backpack next to me or when I had my backpack on top of my suitcase. Probably just a matter of preference as I'm sure there are people who preferred it on the strap, which was a unique location, but I definitely find the new location easier to use. I don't write a lot of reviews, but I wanted to make you aware of the stabilizer strap defect so you know to check for it. I also had to spend a lot of hours researching the new version to decide if it had enough improvements to justify upgrading, so hopefully my review helps you with your decision I think the only major flaw with this backpack, is the mesh pocket is pretty short. It holds my 24oz water bottle fine, but only just barely. It also doesn't have a ton of smaller compartments, but it's size, shape, and features suit my needs perfectly. It slides easily under the seat on airlines, it's comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and the shoe compartment is perfect for stashing my laptops power adapter and wireless mouse. I probably wouldn't recommend this backpack to anyone looking for a dedicated school backpack due to the lack of built-in organizational features, but you know your needs better than I do so don't let that dissuade you. ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars If you like to organize small items with pockets for access, keep looking. It's Not bad otherwise.
Size: Large Color: Blue/Black
Before I found SwissGear I only thought I liked my prior backpacks. They became my refernece. SwissGear seems to be standard issue for most IT people. My prior backpacks that have met my needs. Swiss Gear, Maxxum & Synergy (Older Version), and Kenneth Cole Reaction. I mention them as a reference. My purpose for a backpack is to carry my laptop, electronics, and accessories. This includes 16" Laptop, 13" Work Laptop, & Tablet. I'm glad to see it still has the key holder. I use mine for a small flashlight, ear plugs, & a swiss army knife attached via small S-biners. This is handy but does get in the way of using the pocket for a larger tablet. The pockets in the front compartment are ok, but I wish they had a small zippered pocket. The arrangement is fairly standard. The TSA friendly feature is handy for better access to the laptop compartment. The TSA has me remove my laptop anyway. They didn't get the memo. My 16" laptop is on the larger side and it fits comfortably. A 13" laptop fits easily into the tablet spot. Thus far the padding has protected my laptop in spite of the backpacks propensity to roll over (and often onto the floor). When it comes to sitting up, it's not as stable as my reference backpacks. The battery pocket works. I have a battery just under the maximum capacity the TSA allows, so fairly large. Having the battery in that spot creates a pressure point on your laptop. So far that's not caused any problems but it seems odd. A mesh pocket above the laptop and/or tablet pockets would be handy. The USB cable is USB A. Safe but not the future. The cable is longer than it needs to be though maybe that's so you can use a battery lower in the compartment. The extra length can sometimes get in the way. The cable doesn't appear to be replaceable. That's too bad. Cables wear out. One of the shoulder straps has the external USB A connection. A mesh pocket sits below it. It will hold a larger phone (S21 is what I used) for charging though it's an awkward arrangement but probably functional. The luggage strap is too low or to thin to hold it stable when loaded. It tends to lean and that will throw smaller luggage you may have it strapped on, off balance. I had to grab the hanging strap to keep it stable while walking. The handle is improved. They have the same metal cable but the padding is better. The hardcase glasses pocket is a mixed bag. My sunglasses are in a hard case so for me a soft one would work better. I carry my ear buds in this pocket as well. It's tight but fits. The glasses pocket is also in the way of getting anything in and out of the main compartment. More so as you fill the pack. You can see this in the photo. If they put it on the back, it would be in the way of the two pockets but less in the way of accessing the main compartment. It's an annoyance. The two pockets are nice. They should have put a mesh compartment above the pockets for misc items. The potential spot for the mesh pocket is in the photo. The main compartment is small relative to the backpacks I reference above. But for every day carry that's a fair trade off. The backpack has 3 outside pockets, not counting the sunglasses spot. It could have 7. It should have more than it does. The two side pockets are ok. One is mesh for a beverage but also has a zipper compartment with some insulation. It's gimmicky but...I used it for it's purpose so thumbs up. No problems there. The other side pocket is a shoe pocket. It has a mesh zipper pocket inside which I use for some cash that I'd rather store in the front compartment if it had actually had such a pocket. I also store a small pouch of accessories I use often. Yes a pouch inside a pocket because otherwise everything would get lost in the shoe sleeve. I might use the sleeve for a rain jacket in the summer. The last outside pocket is the front pocket. This is essentially using the front flap as some bonus storage. It's a bad design. I bought the smallest USB cable organizer I could find and found it wouldn't fit. The inside is large enough the zipper isn't. You can see this in the photo. I ended up using another pouch for inside the pocket. Where I would put other pockets. Two small ones would fit, on the top half of each side. The front flap could fit a small one where the Black cloth and logo is. You could have two more below that for relativly flat items.. Either vertical, horizontal or a larger one to fit misc items you tend to pick like boarding passes, luggage claims and paper. With these and the mesh pockets they could have added, or even half of them, this pack would be far better than it is. But it lacks some of the design niceties they used to include in their older backpacks. With that and a tweak to the design of the sunglasses holder location I would have the best daily carry backpack I've ever had. But that's not the case. I've had to improvise solutions to problems that older backpacks had already figured out. The quest continues for a good EDC backpack. This will do until I find it, but this isn't it. That said, my first choice for that next one would still be Swiss Gear. ... show more

About a year ago, I bought a different backpack off Amazon. It had (and still has) very good reviews from very many people. It served its purpose and has held up well, but I wanted something with more pockets/compartments and with more laptop protection. I picked this one mainly because of the shoe compartment. I use my backpack for work and often bring a second pair of shoes so that I can switch between work shoes and comfortable shoes. I will say though that it is a little annoying having the bag part of the compartment loose in the main zipped area. I don’t think I realized it would be that way. The reinforced glasses compartment is also nice, but similarly it gets in the way in the main compartment. I think the design of these two compartments could be improved. My favorite thing, which I wasn’t even looking for in a backpack, is the elastic in the straps. It makes the backpack so much more comfortable. My laptop is quite heavy and then when you add in a water bottle and all the other miscellaneous things, it’s even heavier. My shoulders and back used to hurt from my last backpack and I always thought it was just because of what I was carrying. I don’t even notice the weight now. I took off one star for two minor reasons, but I would still recommend and re-purchase this backpack. 1) the zippers are loud. So loud that others comment on them, no matter how carefully I try to zip and unzip. I think they’re meant to be heavy duty and sturdy, but it’s a bit excessive. 2) the cross emblem on my bag is noticeably crooked. It’s not a big deal, but I paid $100 for this bag and I don’t love that it looks kind of like a knock off. It’s such an easy simple thing that shouldn’t be off. I’ve tried to see it can be turned, but sadly it can’t. ... show more
