Description

Released in 1981, the Omnichord is an electronic musical instrument with an automatic accompaniment function (auto bass/chord) and equipped with a harp sensor. By pressing a chord button and sliding your finger on the harp sensor (strumplate), an arpeggio corresponding to the chord is heard, allowing anyone to easily accompany a song. Omnichord does not require any previous musical experience with an instrument, or even knowledge of staff notation. All that is needed are the chord names required to play a song which is a method commonly known as ‘tab’. Combined with its portability, Omnichord became extremely popular, especially in Europe and America as a new musical instrument that anyone can enjoy anywhere. In addition, due to the unique electronic sounds that are reminiscent of the 80's, and the tactile way musical expressions are achieved, Omnichord has developed cult status around the world. It not only appears in recorded music, but also publicity photos, and has featured in the titles of songs and albums. The Omnichord name was discontinued after the OM-300 (released in 1996), but its popularity as a unique musical instrument has endured the test of time, and now, over 40 years later the Omnichord returns with the OM-108.

This is a cool musical instrument. Easy to use. Sounds good. Fun to play.

  • Great, but should come with power cord
Color: Off-White
It's awesome, and I'm currently using batteries. But for this much money, it should come with a power adapter.

  • Needs work
Color: Off-White
It was not satisfactory for me. It didn't always change chords when I pressed the button to the next chord. The final straw was that Amazon sent me a used return accidentally even though I ordered new and I paid full price.

  • Not Worth It
Color: Off-White
The OM-108 is not an improvement on the OM-300 or QChord. It lacks many features those last Omnichords had like drum fill-in, different sounds for keyboard voices than strumplate (OM-300), song or rhythm cartridges (QChord), chord programmer (OM-300), 100 sounds (QChord), MIDI In (QChord), pitch bend wheel (QChord), built-in reverb and vibrato effects (QChord), etc. Rather, the OM-108 has unique features of its own like 11th & 9th chords in addition to the original 7 modes (9 modes x 12 keys = 108), the ability to play percussion sounds using top row buttons or the strumplate, different rhythm patterns, a software switch to change the percussion sounds to mimic the OM-84, etc. At $800 it's not cheap like it should be as it's also much smaller than the OM-27 it tries to resemble. The output through the 1/8" headphone and especially the 1/4" output is very low. It requires a special 12V (negative center) 1A universal/switching AC to DC adapter which is not included (which an extra $40). If a 500mA QChord adapter (QCA) is used, it makes an audible humming sound. But, it's still fun to play (like all Omnichords). Just not worth the price tag. [DW] ... show more
