  • Good Rower but NOT for Newbies (Please Read)
Style: Classic Color: Black
I row a lot (about 6-10 miles per day/4-5 days a week) and have a lot of thoughts on this rower. Overall, it has held up really well. Here are some things to consider before purchasing: +The footplates swivel. This is a weird design flaw as many have mentioned. If you have correct form (your heels lift up off the footplate two inches or less as you come into the catch) you'll be fine - you just have to adapt and watch your form. If you are new to rowing and don't know proper form, this feature will be a problem. +The meters tracked are worthless. The machine only tracks how far the handle pulls the nylon strap - not how long the propeller in the water stays spinning (as a normal, better water rower would). For a frame of reference for newbies, this is equivalent to rowing a boat and pretending the boat stops dead still for each time you take the oars out of the water. Your power propels the rower forward and those meters should be tracked; yet not on this weird rower. +If you know your stuff; your splits, what your full efforts feel like, how many meters you normally net in a minute, this will not mater. You can crank out timed intervals with great results - you'll just have to guestimate the meters. +I successfully use CityRow for all my workouts. I can do this because a) I know exactly what my timed efforts yield depending on stroke rate and b) because I have a lot of experience with CityRow. It's possible to pair with the CityRow workouts - you just have to be ready to break everything down to timed efforts because the meter tracking is garbage. +To me, a pretty heavy user, this is a super durable rower. Easy to move, easy to store, and looks pretty sleek. Best water rower I found for the price. +Assembled it on my own. I am a 120lbs woman. It was an effort but it is doable if you are used to assembling furniture on your own. There are a few comments I want to address in the reviews that are negative that have *nothing* to do with the rower: +You *will* get calluses on your hands and maybe even your ass. This is a sign that you are doing it right. Athletes develop calluses - from golf to tennis to running. Comes with the territory. You don't need gloves - gloves are for wusses. You need to build your calluses up. If you don't have calluses you will always be uncomfortable. Don't be scared of developing calluses. +Yeah, no rower I've ever used has come with a perfectly comfortable seat. You are working out - you *should* be in some discomfort as you examine your form and effort. Many people mistake discomfort for pain. If you are in pain: stop. If you are in discomfort: welcome; this is where change happens. Stop complaining and suck it up. +If you are new to rowing PLEASE watch videos on proper form before starting where the instructor is ON A WATER ROWER. Water rowers are a different breed than concepts or any rowers where you manually set the resistance. Understand this machine before you buy it and what proper form looks like on it specifically. +Do not mess around with the dumb "resistance" system on this rower. If you think you'll be funneling water in or out each time you work out you are delusional. Fill the rower with water to the highest resistance and train against that. That is how you will get stronger and see results. That is what they would do in any boutique rowing class or with any water rower at a gym. Overall, I love this rower and love rowing. I know my sport well and this does the job. However, if you are new to the rower, make sure you understand the competencies necessary before purchasing. This machine encourages bad form with it's weird footplates - make sure you are confident in your self-accountability and form before purchasing. Rowers are low impact but I've seen people injure themselves when they assume they now how to row. Do your research and make sure this is the right workout for you before buying. ... show more

  • Great for someone looking for exercise through the winter
Style: Classic Color: Black
Let's be clear: I have never, in my life, rowed a boat competitively. The closest I've ever gotten was being woken up by a cockswain yelling the cadence to rowers when I was in college. Poor guys were on the water by 6 AM. I have no idea what those folks would think of this machine. For me, though, it's excellent. Set-up: The machine is relatively easy to assemble, and it comes with (very basic versions of) all the tools you'd need to do so. Sunny provided all the hardware on one vacu-sealed, labeled card. Between the manual and that card, every piece is numbered, and the illustrations in the manual make it very easy to tell what goes where. My only complaint about the illustrations is that it isn't entirely clear which end of the long support goes to the front and which way to mount the seat. Looking at an actual photo of the machine tells you the stickers go toward the back and the leg depressions go forward, so from there, everything was good to go. Using my own electric screwdriver (and otherwise using the provided tools), the time between opening the box and rowing my first stroke was about 90 minutes. I really appreciated that Sunny included both a funnel and a simple transfer pump for adding and removing water. I over-filled it at first, and the pump made it really easy to get it down to the level I wanted. Operation The machine works great. The mechanics are very smooth, and it's very quiet while in use. The water makes a light "woosh" noise that's actually really pleasant. I set this up downstairs, away from our baby's room, but I would be comfortable using it in the room next to his without fearing that it would wake him up. I filled the bubble to level 3. A review on another site said that 6 felt like rowing in real water "with a little extra," and that's not what I was going for. At level 3, I can keep a nice slow-ish pace and build up my heart rate, or I can push harder or do intervals to really get going. The monitor is the real reason I chose this model over the cheaper magnetic model, also from Sunny. This version counts strokes per minute, and that was important to me. Online training videos use strokes per minute as a reference point, and I wanted to be able to follow along with those. Weak Points Only a couple of weak points on this machine: 1. No place to stand a phone/tablet up. There's a depression in the front unit where you can *store* a phone (iPhone 8 Plus with an Otterbox-style case fits with room to spare), but it's horizontal so you can't watch the screen. If you plan to watch workout videos or your favorite TV show while using this, you'll have to find a way to stand your device up independent from this machine. 2. The LED monitor picked up a pulse reading from somewhere even though I don't use a heart monitor. I imagine this is an issue with the heart monitor radio standard itself - interference from something else in my house. And it isn't consistent, just something clocking in at 70-ish beats per minute every now and then. No idea what it is, but not an issue for me. If you plan to use a heart monitor band that connects wirelessly to the machine, you might run into a similar issue, but I can't say that for certain. Overall I'd recommend this for anyone looking to establish/maintain a general level of fitness with an indoor machine. It's quiet, it's an efficient workout, and the price is almost unbelievable for the quality of machine that you get. ... show more

  • Plug missing but v fast vendor response
Style: Classic Color: Black
Upon delivery: - Front plastic wheel/foot casing cracked (functioning for now, but not sure how long it would last) - Missing rubber plug for water tank. However, the water level and design keeps splashing minimal, so I just put packing tape over the hole for now and it's working fine. - Other than that, it arrived quickly - Almost as important, vendor replied to my concerns and shipped replacement parts within 24h of my request. So, now the unit itself: I'm not a rower, so I'm very new to this. - at "max resistance" it seems sort of easy. Difficulty does increase with speed, so I probably need to see how fast I "should" be rowing for optimal results, or if it's just a limitation of the design (probably me) - Assembly was not terribly difficult (even solo). Instructions are a *little* sparse, but there aren't very many components to assemble (water tank and rowing cord section comes as 1 piece) - Standing the unit up for storage is nice, although it would be helpful if it could be hinged or something so it's not standing up 7 ft high. Also, the LCD screen looks very likely to break off if you raise the unit too close to a wall. - while rowing, the unit slides significantly. I'm still waiting on arrival of the rubber mat to put underneath, but the issue is the 4 floor contact points are plastic and not rubber. Not sure how it would fare on carpet, but strongly recommend a rubber floor mat or something to keep it in place. - Seat glides smoothly - The bar is attached via a fabric webbing/strap type material, about the size for a medium dog leash. Seems well-designed so as to not rub or catch anywhere, so I don't foresee any fraying issues. - Generally, seems like a great deal for the price. Will update to 5 stars when replacement parts arrive. ... show more
