  • Good value, checks all the boxes
Style: 8 Ft - 10 Ft Ceiling
My husband asked me to buy this so here's his review: I'm a mechanical engineer. Nearly twenty years ago I designed a hoist for our two kayaks and my design is mechanically identical to this hoist from Amazon, except my design doesn't have the safety brake. From some reviews I read I was a bit skeptical so I went to my local hardware store and bought the same, exact parts as before for two more kayaks we bought this season. But the hardware store parts were over double the cost of this hoist so I took a chance and ordered it to compare. Out of the box it looked capable of the job so I set the hardware store parts to the side. I glanced at the instructions to get familiar then set to work. Installation was easy enough. I agree with other reviewers that the supplied rope didn't seem adequate so I used 1/4" nylon braided rope, 50' per kayak, from the hardware store since the same type of rope has worked flawlessly all this time. My new boats hoisted up more easily than with my hoist design since the pulley diameter on this hoist is larger than the hardware store pulleys. The safety brake feature worked flawlessly and makes it very easy to wind the rope around the supplied cleat for storage. Attached is a photo of my two old orange and yellow kayaks on my hoist design and one of my new boats with this hoist. This hoist nicely lifts the kayak up as high as possible. Minor complaint - I do wish this hoists pulleys were made of metal but I'm open minded they'll survive many ups and downs. I plan to return all the parts except the rope to my hardware store. I hope this review helps you. ... show more

  • Works, installation a little troublesome
Good news! The instructions have been updated. They are slightly more clear (the first one I received was defective- missing a pulley- and the replacement had new instructions) The main issue is orienting the non-lifting pulley brackets. I recommend laying it all out on the floor before installing to save yourself some aggravation. Watch the video. Then the installation should be relatively straightforward The product itself works well and seems dependable. The kayak now hangs above my car, which speaks to my comfort with the storage rack. The first unit was defective (poor QA- how do you not notice a missing pulley?) and it took about 10 days for the company to ship a replacement, while they sent me a message every other day to rate them. Assuming you get a working product the first time, there should be no problem ... show more

A little confusing to figure it out but once I got it up it’s perfect.

  • Easy to install.
Style: 8 Ft - 10 Ft Ceiling
The instruction sketch images were a bit confusing but I found a YouTube video that resolved my question.

  • Go with the Pro!
So I've got the pro and the non-pro version of this product. I can tell you hands down, the Pro is worth the $5-10 premium. Build-quality on both is fine, but the included rope on the pro(nylon) is much nicer than the cheap polypropylene included on the standard. Then there's the issue of the center strap. I'm not sure if other manufactures lose sight of this fact, but Kayak hulls are tapered. Thus, if not adjusted just right, the straps tend to "wander". The Pro version's center strap fixes this problem. No more worrying if the boat is going to slip out due to slippery straps. If there were one thing I'd change, is possibly how the auto-brake system engages. As is, two metal tabs kinda jam into the rope. I'm no engineer, but to me, it seems that after a little while this could fray/cut the cord. ***My Rating Criteria*** Build Quality(47.5%) - 4.0 Stars Efficacy(47.5%) - 5.0 Stars Post-Sale Support(0.0%) - n/a Packaging/Presentation(5.0%) - 5.0 Stars WEIGHTED AVERAGE(100.0%) - 4.5 STARS ... show more

  • Hard to lift for heavy kayak
Style: 8 Ft - 10 Ft Ceiling
Pulley system was easy to install. However, it was difficult to lift a 75 pound kayak. I am a fit person, but it required my wife and me to raise.

  • Absolutely do not buy
Style: 8 Ft - 10 Ft Ceiling
I bought this pulley to store my kayak. I have a heavier kayak (50lbs) but given the specs listed 150lbs rating, I thought this would work great. I just installed it, which was fairly easy to do. It is allegedly designed to be used perpendicular or parallel to ceiling beams. As you can see from my pic, I had perpendicular beams. After installing, I hoisted it up. This was fairly easy to do until you get about 2 feet from the ceiling; due to the configuration of the pulley and the aggressive break, it is nearly impossible to pull it all the way up, as you have to pull towards the other pulley to disengage the break and this becomes difficult to do if you have a 2-3 ft wide kayak to pull around. But this ended up being a moot point, because as I was trying to pull it up the final distance, I noticed the base plate of the pulley had completely bent! It is very poorly designed for perpendicular mounting, as the anchor screws are not mounted flush with the pulley and so downward force from the pulley puts a cantilever force onto the mounting plate instead of applying directly to the anchor screws. I'm hoping to return but unfortunately am just past the 60 day return window. I've reached out to the company to see if I can hopefully get refunded. to If you have an inflatable paddle board or something like that, it would probably work, but otherwise I could not recommend this to anyone. ... show more

  • Change those ropes!
Style: 8 Ft - 10 Ft Ceiling
Excellent product, but on the advice of other reviewers and my own eyes, I tossed the lousy ropes that came with it & spent a few bucks more on a 50 foot hank of real paracord. Works perfectly, brakes & all, and my beautiful kayak (and car under it) are much more securely stored. It fits up tight against the ceiling and is otherwise an excellent value. ... show more
