I am a fan of steel series. I was in love with the merc stealth which I have no idea why they stopped making. Was a great keyboard. Sadly mine finally died. I have tried multiple keyboards since and keep being disappointed. Which this isn’t quite up there with the merc, I do like it. The keys are very responsive although I do with they were a touch louder. As someone who is on the phone all day with customers, it helps for them to hear that I’m typing so they know I’m still there if I happen to get a bit quiet while assisting them with any order issues. The brightness is wonderful. I love the feel of the aluminum keys. I am a bit of a key basher, I don’t feel like these will go flying while I’m typing as some others have. My only real sort of complaint is I wish there was a way to keep the num lock on all the time. Everytime I turn off my computer, it turns off and I have to set again. It’s minor but still bugs me. And I wish it was more visible when the num lock or caps lock buttons were on. Not very easy to see as there isn’t really a change that is quickly noticed. Overall, so far I’m loving the keyboard. ... show more

  • This Keyboard works well with Linux
Size: Apex 5 Style: Hybrid Blue – Tactile & Clicky
I bought this keyboard because I needed a Keyboard that works well with Linux and it does. I have a dual boot system, Win 10/Garuda Dragonized Linux. I first tried this out in Win 10 and while the lighting worked fine when I tried to use the software for it my AntiVirus blocked the driver immediately as a security risk, so I will not be using some of the more advanced features to this keyboard. I then booted into Linux and the keyboard lights kept right on working. My previous keyboard, Coolermaster, in order for the lights to work in Linux I had to type a command in the terminal or add a line to a startup file. with this Apex 5 the lights and functions of the lights work perfectly well with out any special commands. Overall an excellent product. ... show more

  • Apex 5: Beautiful keyboard but not worth the money [low quality keycaps and terrible switches]
Size: Apex 5 Style: Hybrid Blue – Tactile & Clicky
There are many good things about this keyboard but overall, I don't recommend this keyboard and I will explain why. First some positive points: +Appearance; This keyboard simply looks amazing. With light on or off it just looks so minimal and beautiful. The RBG colors are probably one of the best I have ever seen. +Media keys: they volume wheel and the pause/play button are really helpful. +The wrist rest: This is my favorite thing about this keyboard. Some Youtube reviewers say it feels cheap but I just love it. It could be slightly wider to support larger hands but it’s just great. So easy to clean and not too rough and not to soft like razer wrist rests. +Cable routing options: it really helps to keep your cable out of the way and keep you desk organized. +Build quality: The keyboard feels solid and really sturdy on your desk. It also doesn’t move or slip. The wrist rest doesn’t move either. +The font/legends: they are standard and aren’t weird looking. +Steel series engine is really amazing. So easy to use and really helpful +You can change RGB effects and macro functions without having to use the software which is really convenient. Now, let’s take a look at some negatives: -the keycaps: The keycaps feel really really cheap. Even after only 3 weeks of use, I feel the surface of the keys that I use feel washed out and a bit smoother than the first day. They also have a quality to them that makes them extra noisy and rattly. -the switches: I have so many problems with the switches. First of all, why blue switches? Almost no gamer prefers blue switches for gaming and this keyboard is advertised and designed for gamers. So this is the first really weird choice. Honestly, I feel they decided to use blue switches because they are targeting younger generation who are probably buying a mechanical keyboard for the first time so they wanted to give them something that feels and sounds a lot different than a membrane or a laptop keyboard but I simply hate these switches. They are loud in the most annoying way. I have heard other blue switches and some of the have a sophisticated quality to them but these simply sound horrible. Anther extremely negative aspect of this keyboard is that it uses “Hybrid” switches. (you can see on youtube what they are) This is bad because of two reasons. First of all, with the same price or even cheaper, you can get fully mechanical keyboards that feel and sound 100 times better. Also, if one of your switches breaks (like mine did) there is no way you can find a replacement for them. I contacted Steelseries and they simply said they don’t sell the switches separately. One of the main reasons why people buy mechanical keyboards is to be able to replace dead or broken switches which is impossible with Apex 5. I ended up asking for a replacement, but the second keyboard was defective as well (the space bar got stuck in place). Luckily, amazon had my back and refunded almost all my money. One last problem I have with the switches is that they don’t feel reliable. Although they are blue (clicky and tactile), the switches sometimes actuate before the click which automatically cancels the whole point of the keyboard being tactile. :D The switches are produced by a Chinese company called TTC. I have never heard their name so it’s easy to put the blame on them but it is a Steel series product after all. -The OLED: It looks cool but it’s just useless. It does all the thing they claim is does but I’m not the kind of person to put the time to get used to it. I simply prefer 3 simple LED light for Caps, numlock and scroll lock. What annoys me the most about this keyboard in general is that it doesn’t hold up to older Steelseries products quality. To me, it is clear that Steel series is targeting the less experienced consumers and not professional gamers anymore. I mean, there is no way a pro gamer puts up with this quality. It is just unacceptable from Steel Sereis. I have a Steel series mouse and I’ll probably buy another Steel series mouse after this one. But I’m sure I won’t buy their keyboards at least for a long time. All in all, this is simply a bad keyboard for this price. Yes, it has many cool features but there are so many better keyboards that you can find so almost half the price. Honestly, after some research on the internet, I am convinced that gaming brand keyboards are not worth it because they are almost always over-priced. ... show more

  • Best gaming keyboard I've ever had.
Size: Apex 5 Style: Hybrid Blue – Tactile & Clicky
I replace my gaming keyboards about every two and a half years, or so. This is is the best best one i've owned, by far. The build quality, materials and finished product are all top notch. The software is easy to use. And the little OLED screen adds a really cool touch. I highly recommend this product. ... show more

  • Massive input delay
Size: Apex 5 Style: Hybrid Blue – Tactile & Clicky
This is not a good keyboard for gaming, it feels like I'm typing in slow motion because of how delayed this keyboard is. The lighting is pretty good and turning it on and off is quick and easy. The keys have a slightly higher pitched clack than my previous mechanical keyboard. The sound scroller 1/3 of the times turns the volume up when I try to scroll it down and vice versa, so it's like a battle trying to use the keyboard to change the volume. Despite all that, the input delay is the real deal breaker, I would have been fine with the rest if it responded faster. ... show more
