  • Great book for the new entrepreneur.
Got an interesting one to review with you today. Now, most or all of you know by now that I own/run my own business. So why, you ask, am I reviewing a book on starting a business? Actually the answer is simpler than you’d think. It makes it easy for you and I don’t have to worry about a bunch of annoying questions! Seriously though, this entire series of books I’ve reviewed so far are a great addition to anyone trying to start and run a small business. This one is really simply written and breaks everything down in easy to digest chunks. It starts at the very beginning with the idea that tramples through your brain just waiting to be the next sensation. It shows you the difference between an idea and an opportunity and how to capitalize and build on the opportunity. For all you may have a great idea, if you don’t have a viable opportunity, it’s basically a wash. The best part of this book is that it uses real world companies to show where things worked and where/why they didn’t. They discuss where your internal belief system can bugger your business and never let it get off the ground. How careful planning may have you continuing in your normal job while you work your business on the side instead of jumping straight into the deep end. You’ll learn things about marketing, operations, growth and competitors. I actually learned a couple tricks from this book and I’ve been in business for more than 30 years. Never think you know it all, because invariably someone will come along and prove you wrong. ... show more

  • Already useful at chapter 1.
I am only 25 pages into this book and it is already so useful. I have been running my business for 3 years now, basically winging it, until now. With the help of this book, it is time to make my business legitimate, and, more importantly, successful. And, the book comes with great free online resources. I highly recommend it. ... show more

  • Lots of filler
I was looking for something more practical and less abstract. I bought this one because of the massive amounts of positive reviews, but it was disappointing. Check out this useful "graphic" of the section header placed on some folders. You know it's a graphic because it tells you it's a graphic, and even gives you a helpful figure number to reference, in case you hit a point later where you suddenly think WAIT A SECOND I NEED TO SEE THAT PICTURE OF BLANK FOLDERS AGAIN. That's almost a quarter of the page right there. Then add in things like chapter recaps, which always take up a full page, even when the chapter itself was three pages long, and what you have is a 90-page book pretending to be a 250-page book. There's very little practical advice in this book. I don't need to reevaluate me definitions of "ideas" versus "opportunities." What I need is things like an overview of what categories to include in my chart of accounts. Instead I got some meaningless "graphics." It gets two stars instead of one because there's some nice blank pages in the back for taking notes. I filled those up with things I was learning from other sources while trudging my way through this book. ... show more

  • Solid book for anyone looking to start a (serious) business
This is a book the author clearly did not rush. It covers the key information anyone starting a (serious) business would be interested in. There are some useful templates associated with the book as well. Nice work!

  • Excellent read
The best way to read this book is to only go through the chapters that you need. I didn't need a lot of the chapters, but the ones that I needed did have very good information. The best chapters in my opinion are the later ones where the author explains how to construct a business and marketing plan. Some of the weaker chapters were the ones talking about pricing a product or service. A lot of the information in those chapters were very common sense and repetitive. I also wish they provided more in depth information on how to do research on a market, the advice severely lacked detail. ... show more

  • Wish I read this sooner!
Definitely 5 stars! This book helped answer so many questions I had about getting started. It seems like everyone with an Instagram is starting a business these days and it can feel overwhelming to try and set yourself apart. Ken Colwell doesn’t just simply lay out steps; he dives into the crucks of what it takes to be an entrepreneur. He asks questions that every future or current business owner should not only consider, but really marinate on. Are you entering a market because you’re passionate or because you see a money making opportunity? Maybe both? Which is more beneficial? How do you take an idea and turn it into dollars? How can you know it will be worth it? How can I scale and grow to where I need to be? Ken Colwell gives his expertise & knowledge on all these questions. Don’t miss out on the wisdom in this book. I’ve been running a business for 5 years and still found it super helpful and insightful for my next venture. I wish I read it sooner so I could have avoided some of the mistakes I’ve made. Definitely worth every penny. ... show more

  • Just the beginning
I am using this book as a guide in beginning a new chapter in life by hopefully opening and succeeding in a small business atmosphere. It has been a valuable tool in providing the information I need to apply in my venture for future success. Information from thinking like an entrepreneur to the detailed chapter on writing a smart and decisive business plan will be invaluable to people like me with zero business experience. It has been inspirational and a great book to start. Thank you to the publisher and author for the beginning of a lifetime. Good luck to everyone. ... show more
