  • Expensive once you add up the price of required "accessories"
Style: USB | USB 2.0 Hub
Half a star off for cost. The problem is this requires cables to work, and maybe a power supply, plus ears if you want to mount it in a rack. The good of this is you can choose your cable length: 6 foot (p/n SVUSB2N1_6), 10-foot (p/n SVUSB2N1_10), or 15-foot (p/n SVUSB2N1_15). Other brands come with attached cables--lower cost, but you're stuck with a fixed length. This unit contains a four-port hub, which means you can plug in more than just a keyboard and mouse. If all you use it for is a keyboard and mouse then you probably don't need to add a power supply (p/n SVUSBPOWER). However if you add other accessories that get their power from the USB connection, then get a power supply. Any 5 volt DC regulated power supply will work. That StarTech supply is 2 amps, their instruction booklet mentions 1 amp, and I'm using an old Cisco line-lump style supply that's 2.5 amps. What matters is the supply puts out enough amps to run your scanner, camera, hard disk, or whatever extra you plug in. What's nonnegotiable: 5 volts DC regulated, connector diameter of 5.5 mm, and that it's positive center (all modern wall warts are positive center). Finally are the rack-mount ears (p/n SV431RACK). I'm not fond of StarTech's split lacing bar (it's too fat) and although my target machines are in a rack, I put the switch on my desk and so didn't bother to buy ears. Another half star off because it's persnickety when you switch from machine to machine--for best results you must wait a few seconds before using keyboard or mouse. Think of it this way. You have a hub plugged into your PC with a keyboard and mouse plugged into the hub. You yank the USB cable out of that PC and plug it into another. It'll take a few seconds for the new PC to recognize the keyboard and mouse, wake up the proper drivers, etc. I've had an 8-port StarTech PS-2 KVM switch for about 12 years. What a colossal pain PS-2 was. You cannot hot-plug it like you can USB, which meant StarTech had to put a tiny processor on each port to fake out the PC and fool it into thinking your PS-2 mouse and keyboard always remained plugged in. This led to tons of problems if the tiny processor got mixed up (CTRL key stuck on, or whatever). They didn't have a clean way to reset those processors, and power-up of the switch and the servers it connected to required a strict sequence. Power cycling servers to get your KVM switch un-confused is unacceptable. This new "yank out the USB cable and plug it into the next machine" is an advantage over power cycling. Dumb StarTech + smart USB specification is an acceptable compromise, even if it's a pain in the butt. I put a sticker on the front of my new KVM switch that reads, "Count to 5 S-L-O-W-L-Y". My USB mouse was failing and the count trick worked, even when the mouse got so bad it ceased to work when plugged directly into a computer's USB port (got a new mouse, which works much better). Oh, and I scrapped my old PS-2 KVM switch. To make this work properly you need to set a couple of things in your BIOS. StarTech details this in their little manual. Positives: Extremely rugged. StarTech really gets their VGA right (their specs claim 1920 x 1440) and they have great cables so I suspect 15-foot cables would still look awesome. Four-port hub rather than just a two-port hub like everyone else. It'd be terrific if you had a scanner or something. I've successfully used thumb drives (beats crawling around inside my rack with a flashlight to find the USB port on the back of a server). And I tried a DVD drive. The DVD drive works fine once the server is booted, but it didn't work to boot off the DVD (bummer, but it kinda makes sense). Because of the tight spacing of the cables and the location of the monitor's VGA cable two of the USB ports are harder to reach (I use those for the keyboard and mouse). Important note about the USB hub: Because the switching technique is "yank and plug" it's critical that you dismount your USB accessories *before* you switch. The keyboard and mouse are okay (don't forget the BIOS setting), and there's a setting in Windows so you can yank thumb drives without first ejecting them (must eject on Mac), but everything else needs to dismount. Finally, there is no traditional on-screen-display to facilitate switching with the keyboard. According to the manual there are some new keyboard commands, but as I have this switch on my desk I haven't bothered to learn the new commands and just push the buttons instead. Oh, and for my new servers I'm going with IPMI v2, which is KVM and remote media over a dedicated Ethernet port (works at the BIOS level). Someday I'll retire this switch. That's about it. The StarTech SV431USB isn't perfect, but pretty darn good for what it is. ... show more

  • Works as advertised but questionable reliability
Style: USB | USB 2.0 Hub
I bought one of these 5 years ago to use in a rack mount with 3 Mac servers, an Apple wired keyboard and LG and Dell 1920x1080 monitors (one at a time - unit does not support dual monitors, Dell monitor replaced a failing LG). I would probably have given this item 5 stars if not for questionable reliability. Out of the box one of the USB ports did not work but otherwise it worked as advertised. As I only needed 3 ports I did not bother with a Warranty claim. Set up was quick and easy (plug and play with no driver installation or configuration). 5 years later a second USB port failed. I've purchased a second unit and will be adding a 4th (Windoze) server to the setup. Hopefully reliability of the second unit will be better. ... show more

  • Good for switching touch-screen Monitor
Style: USB | USB 2.0 Hub
Switches keyboard, video and mouse plus 2 other USB devices. Generally don't have a problem switching between desktop computers, but it does have problems with laptops - more than half the time only the video will switch over. I think this relates to the drivers within the laptop, but regardless of cause I would not recommend this switch for use with laptops. That being said, I am using this to switch a touch-screen monitor between computers, which requires both a video path and a USB path from the monitor. This is working great on my desktop computers running windows 7 and windows 8. ... show more

  • Outstand USB KVM value
Style: USB | USB 2.0 Hub
I wanted to add a USB KVM switch to my computer network, replacing a PS/2 KVM switch. One key desire was a rack mounted switch to clean up the work surface. I researched various switches and selected the StarTech KVM since the multi-star reviews were positive, and the few 1 and 2 stars were focusing on the lack of some features those people needed. Since I didn't need those features (hot switching via keyboard) the StarTech was my choice...and a great choice it was. Construction wise it is rock solid...heavy gauge metal - not plastic. The optional 1U rack mount kit worked perfectly. Assembly and setup was smooth as silk. A few items of note: This KVM switch uses standard video and USB cabling between the switch and the computers...The USB cable is A-B type connectors, and the VGA is standard 15-pin M-F cable. You can buy the StarTech cable sets (6' worked well in my rack) but you can also use your own cables. The StarTech cable sets are heavy duty and somewhat stiff - so if you need flexibility or less than 6' (such as a desktop) then roll your own cables. Also, the optional power supply is to power the USB hub (USB 2) if you're going to switch USP peripherals between computers/servers other than the keyboard and mouse. For me, this was a great find and fulfilled a desire to neaten up my basement rack. UPDATE: Decided to order a second StarTech 4 port switch especially since it didn't require any special cables...just an A-B USB cable and a M-F VGA cable. In this case, a non-rack application, using shorter 3 foot cables. I'm very pleased! UPDATE2: Continue to be very satisfied with this KVM switch and highly recommend it. ... show more
