I'm a huge fan of Spigen cases, and have been for over 7 years now. I like their conservative designs that offer good protection without excess bulk and/or obnoxious details. I usually purchase their Neo Hybrid series for my phones, which has a flexible TPU main structure within a polycarbonate frame that adds an extra bit of rigidity to the case. It's a nice compromise between a thinner and lighter, all-TPU case like the Liquid Armor, and the max-protection Tough Armor that I'm reviewing here. Sadly, they're not making a Neo Hybrid for the Pixel 6a, so I had to go with the Tough Armor to get the desired level of protection for my needs. First, let me start with the positives. This case is extremely well-made and fits the phone perfectly. There are thoughtful touches like little pockets in the corners that act as air cushions for corner impacts, as well as bits of foam padding in the sides and back of the case for additional shock absorption. Installation can be a little intimidating because you have to use a bit of force to pop the phone into the case. But once it's on, it's secure and not coming off unless you want it to. Finally, despite being Spigen's "toughest" case for this particular phone, it's still relatively light and fairly compact. Yes, it's a bit on the thick side, but that goes hand in hand with the extra protection this case offers over something thinner (obviously). There's a nice lip around the edges of the screen, as well as a somewhat deep recess for the camera bump. The PC backplate is thin, but adds enough structural rigidity to help resist any kind of normal bending force your phone may encounter (accidentally sitting on it, for example, not that I've done that *cough*). Oh, and the little built-in kick stand is nifty, if a little on the flimsy side (it sorta flops open, without any way to lock it in the open position). Now, the negatives, and there's only one but it's a really big one. The polycarbonate backplate covers most of the back and sides of the case, and it is very, very smooth. You already know where this is going, and my phone slipping out of my hand today and landing on a hard tile floor was what prompted me to write this review. Now, simply holding the phone is not an issue. There's enough TPU material on the right side of the case covering the power and volume buttons that your thumb (right hand) or fingers (left hand) can get a decent grip while holding the phone normally. The issue is that, when picking up the phone or pulling it out of a tight pocket, it can slip out of the hand very easily before a proper grip can be achieved. And that's what happened to me today. I pulled the phone out of my left front pocket, and while attempting to establish a proper grip on it, it slid right out of my hand from chest height (I'm 6'2) and landed hard on the floor. Fortunately, the case did its job admirably, and the only thing that sustained damage in this incident was my ego. I'm really torn on my thoughts about this case. On one hand, I'm irritated that I dropped my phone due to a lack of grip on the mostly smooth sides. On the other hand, I do appreciate the level of protection that it offers while the phone is in my pocket. I work a very physical job that makes my phone susceptible to bends, impacts, and crushing forces while in any one of my pockets. This case offers a great amount of protection without making the phone so bulky that it restricts leg movement, causes discomfort, or is just a nuisance to carry around. I realize there are other solutions for carrying a phone with me at work (such as a holster) but they all have their fair share of negatives for my particular situation. For those like me who want an extra level of protection for their phone while at work or during physical activity, this case is great despite how difficult it can be to grip sometimes. However, if you're just casually carrying your phone around and don't need the sort of added impact protection that I do, I recommend Spigen's other cases like the Liquid Armor or Rugged Armor. Those are thinner and fit more easily into most pockets while still offering decent protection from minor drops. They also have ridges molded into the sides that make them far easier to pick up and maintain grip. I have the Rugged Armor case for this phone to use outside of work, and I really like the way it feels in-hand. The ridges on the sides give it a nice grip and feel, while the back has an almost sandstone texture to it (not super grippy, but not too smooth either). It maintains a generous lip around the edges of the screen as well as the camera bump, and it has a subtle bulge at each corner for that little bit of extra cushion for corner impacts. If it just had that little bit of extra rigidity and impact protection on the back like the Tough Armor, it would be my full-time case for this phone for sure. I hope this review helps! ... show more

I love this case. The feel and design are awesome. The buttons are big easy to use. The kickstand works but on the small side. The only thing that could make this case even better would be if they textured the body of the case a bit. It can be a little slick at times and a little texture would make this thing great. I've used this brand of case for my phones for years. The kickstand is a nice touch and I found this to be the happy medium ground between light protection and the giant shroud that some companies offer. Overall, the design is timeless and the fit is great. It's kept my Pixel 4a safe throughout and I'm confident it'll do the same for the 6a.
