    • Worth it for a dedicated template bit
I was impressed with this bit when I first started using it with my soss hinge template. It cut easily and smooth. Then I messed up and instead of the guide hitting the screw, the blade hit the screw and cut half through a screw that was used as a stop for center part of hinge that's deeper. I was sure it wrecked bit.... but started again making sure all was set properly and I was able to finish my table leaf project with smooth cuts. This is my second SpeTool spiral cutter. I primarily use Whiteside router bits in my shop because they cut clean, but wanted to try these given the price. They cut super clean, way cleaner than my experiences with other off-brand router bits from Amazon. Basically no burning on the woods I've used it on (walnut, sapele, and maple so far).     • It works better than I had expected to cut a lot of mortises.
This router bit is extremely well made. It is very solid and very sharp. I like the 1/2 inch shank that tapers to 3/8 inch but is still long enough to let me cut a mortise at full depth without the shank getting in the way. It lifts the chips very well from the hole as it cuts. Since carbide can be brittle yet very strong I would advise doing a few shallow cuts rather than just one or two passes in the mortise or hole you are trying to cut. All in all, it is well worth the purchase price. ... show more

I just made a bunch of mortise and tenon joints in hard maple. I used this bit for the mortise. It’s perfectly three eights inch wide and cut through my hard maple like butter

The tips of this 3/8" upcut spiral bit and a companion 1/4" upcut spiral bit broke immediately on routing mortises in white oak, making the bits worthless. Each didn't last for one mortise 1-1/2" long by 1" deep. Unfortunately, I'm past the return date. I'd give zero stars if the rating system allowed. ... show more
