I had been eyeing this product by Sparx for a while. Let’s face it, it is expensive and getting skates sharpened at the local rink is not. The problem I had was I either would forget to get my children’s skates sharpened in time or would go and the shop was closed. This year once my son was skating almost every day and sometimes twice a day and my daughters were more interesting in figure skating buying it became a no brainer so I bit the bullet and have not regretted it for a second. It is amazing. So fast, so accurate and so convenient. It is much more compact than I thought it would be and easily fits into our rather compact city apartment. I am able to sharpen three pairs of skates (and sometimes their friends too) in less than twenty minutes. Switching between blades is super easy. This is a great product with excellent engineering. The convenience alone is worth the price of the machine and replacement rings. Sharpen your kids skates at midnight? no problem. I researched the product for some time and I would not hesitate to recommend purchasing Sparx to other hockey family's. We have goalie and players in the family and it does a great job with both types of skate blades. Do purchase an edge checker to check the level of the blade and also purchase a variety of honing stones that have different grits, important for deburring. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I love this machine. I debated for a year about the purchase. I should have never waited. The local shop never gave me a level sharpening so I would have a great edge on one side but not the other. The Sparx gives a perfect sharpening every time. I’ve had one for almost 4 months now. Number one take away is check alignment of grinding stone prior to every sharpening. I started doing this after every one because the machine kept going out of alignment (didn’t move it after alignment). It works great once you double check the alignment.     • Better than I dreamed
I bought a Sparx a few months ago (not from Amazon, though). With three players in the family, although it'll never pay for itself purely financially, the convenience was worth the difference to me. Boy is it a game changer. My kids (11 and 15, FWIW) each do a two-pass sharpening every week after their practices are done, so that going into games over the weekend they'll have sharp skates every time. When the school team starts up, my boy will likely do his two-pass sharpening the day of his school game and be good until the next one. This comes out to about 6 hours/sharpening for each of them. I sharpen mine about every two weeks since I only play once a week and only wear them for coaching otherwise. We love the Sparx. We never have dull skates and the consistent level of sharpness from practice to practice and game to game is something that people don't mention often, but that is a big advantage of being able to sharpen so easily and conveniently at home. We sharpen more often that we probably need to because we can, but that consistency is a wonderful thing. My skates are always still sharp "enough" when I finally sharpen them - we've seen no obvious difference in durability of the edges between the Sparx and our local well-known hockey chain, where they do a wonderful job of sharpening. As an added benefit, we bought the edge checker from Sparx, and using it we have found that once the sharpener is set up the edges are nearly perfectly level every single time. To be honest even the best shops don't achieve that accuracy that frequently. Honestly, the sharpenings I have given myself with the Sparx are the best ones I have ever had, in a career of playing and coaching over thirty years long. ... show more
