This review is for the US version at $800 ($200 off). It's a compact phone with flagship specs, i.e. Snapdragon 888 + 1080p OLED display. Its 21:9 display allows me to watch movies without the black bars on the top/bottom. But regular 16:9 videos (most of youtube) will either have black bars on the sides, or if you choose to zoom to fit, have the top/bottom cut off. The tall aspect ratio is great for browsing and split screen use. The phone feels fast/snappy overall. Bottom line, it works as I expected, no complaints so far.

I really do like the phone over all. I wished the finger print sensor was in a different location as I some times hit it accidentally. It works ok buy my old BlackBerry key2 (yes BlackBerry) space bar one worked way better and did not hit it accidentally. The aspect ratio of 21:19 is a little troubling to get used to but after 3 weeks of use I have adjusted. It is nice to be able to hold in one had and text. I guess the benefit of the longer narrow. Love that I can still use a sd card.ans dont need a paper clip to get out. The camera app is a little more difficult to get used to compared to other phone but is ok. There are some great feature like the auto focus select. Will tract faces really well even if running. It does get warm when shooting video but I have not had it over heat yet. It is definitely slippery if not in a case. As a side note there are not alot of cases to choose from. Battery life is ok I get through the day with our having to charge in less gaming on. Normally I have the settings adjusted to minimize usage. The screen quality is pretty good it the the iphone 13 is brighter. I wish was a little better in sun light. I do like how there are no cut outs for the ear speaker. I wished the price was a little lower. I got free earbuds with mine as this was the promotion so i justified it as being a little cheaper. Over all it is a nice phone and actually not a bad substitute for BlackBerry for those looking to switch since there will be no more. The expandable storage, finger sensor are great to have (especially since wearing mask). Almost for got still has head phone jack which is great to ad external stuff like mics and Sony accessories.

I was forced to change from my Galaxy S5 due to the 3g networks getting shut down, and this was the only phone that I could find with an SD card slot, headphone jack, unlockable bootloader, available ROMs, and works on Verizon. Unfortunately it doesn't come with a user replaceable battery. The aspect ratio is kind of weird, I would prefer 16:9, but I've gotten used to it, and it does allow split screen with youtube and another app so I don't have to pay for background playback. The back of the phone is super slippery, and will move around on a flat surface almost like it is sitting on an air hockey table, so I had to get a case with a textured back. It seems to be an upgrade as far as speed, speaker volume, and battery life (except for the fact that the battery can't be replaced later when it doesn't hold as much of a charge). The charging plug only takes a USB-C input, so the C-to-C cable can't also be used to connect to my computer. I therefore needed to get a seperate charger and cable for travel, but sony doesn't sell any chargers, and there didn't seem to be any that were explicitly compatible and comparible for sale anywhere. So I guess I'll have to hope that using a random charger won't start a fire while using with this. As far as software issues, I enabled battery care and set it to not charge past 80% but it did anyway, at least the first time. After plugging it in, turning the screen off and setting it down, the screen comes back on for no reason repeatedly. It comes preinstalled with some unremoveable junk apps. There is no button to see all of the apps on the phone. The back button is on the wrong side and isn't changeable, even though it is an on screen button so this should be easy to make possible. You can't add additional screens to the left of the home screen. It doesn't show apps that have the draw over other apps permission so I can disable them. Luckily these can be ameliorated by installing another ROM, for those so inclined. Updated 6/1: Phone seems to be too easily brickable. After reflashing a rom that was already on there to try to fix an issue, and it reporting okay, it somehow got hard bricked and had to be sent in to repair. I don't know why flash mode isn't in read only memory so bricking can be recovered. They have only 1 repair entity in the US, who estimated it would take a week to repair once they received the phone. It took over a week to tell me what needed to be fixed, and then another week to ship the phone. Between that and the back and forth of emails and shipping time, it took 28 days from first contact to get my phone back. I still can't find a ROM that has working VolTE or whatever the issue is, and I'm sick of these phone manufacturers putting a bunch of junk on the phones and locking them down so they can't be customized so I have to jump through all these hoops. After being back on their stock rom, I noticed significant battery drain compared to having LineageOS. Also their game customizer or whatever app is not only not disableable, but can't have its notifications disabled.

Phone had to be returned, because it was overheating out of the box. The camera was fun to use, lot of manual options and after a reasonable learning curve it makes good photos. Dedicated camera button and headphone jack were huge plus. Nice screen, ok performance, but had an unexpected freeze/restart issue once. Some annoying things: Android 12's bricked quick settings Not having timelapse feature in the camera app is unacceptable at this price point No option to pin shortcuts to the homescreen Background noise when using wired headphones Weak battery performance Useless companion app for Windows The biggest issue of course was the overheating, even when doing basic tasks. Phone was hot when charging, forget to use it in the meantime. Incompetent Sony customer service, they couldn't help with any of my issues unfortunately. Shame, because the overall feel of the phone was great, small form factor, headphone jack, elegant design. Not recommended.
