Since it’s ultimately about the sound, my first bit of advice would be to check out the demos for this device and get an idea of what it’s capable of. In addition to typical “drum machine” drums, this instrument can generate a huge number of interesting percussive sounds (as well as some good bass and instrument sounds, though that’s not its focus). And this isn't a sampler, it's a synth. So instead of loading and working with samples, you're programing sounds - CyDrums comes with over 500 presets to get you going. To navigate the sounds, there's a pretty clever category system built into the unit. You can also tag the new sounds you create. Listening to CyDrums with headphones reveals the true sound capability – it’s excellent! Form factor-wise, CyDrums is compact so it's super portable and takes up very little desk space. I can operate the knobs (which are ‘stalks’, similar to those on the Korg Volcas) and the screen is small yet crisp. If you have huge hands or not the best eyesight, it may not be the easiest piece of gear to work with. An editor app for the CyDrums would be awesome, but as of this review, there isn’t one. That said, a major plus for the CyDrums is the pad sensitivity. Yes they are smallish, but the pads on this machine are about the most responsive of anything similar I own. Right out of the box, these pads played fine for me. Feature-wise, besides the great sound, the CyDrums has just about everything I want in a modern drum machine: long pattern capability, song mode, per step probability (etc.), mute modes… There is menu diving, but if you’re up for it you can squeeze a lot out of this tiny box. Navigating and programming CyDrums is similar to working with an Elektron device in that there’s a bit of a learning curve that comes with all that flexibility, so you need to be prepared to put some time into it. Lastly, kudos to Sonicware for the manual – it’s a searchable PDF file that’s pretty detailed AND pretty readable. Thanks! 😊

Okay I'm going to tell you straight. This is good. Quality. Feels just as close good, as a high quality sp404 Mark II. It's a bit easier but still a bit of a learning curve. But this is not a sampler. You cannot put your own sounds. It's more of a sound generator so you can create your own drum kits and your own bass lines and synthesizers. Which it is a FM synthesizer technically. If you're the type that doesn't like to experiment with sounds, this is not for you. But if you're the type they want to experiment a lot with sounds, this is something you should really look into. It's near the same level as a novations circuit tracks and Elektron model cycles. The price is reasonable. Even though they claim this is a cheap device. It's really up there in quality. I do love the idea that it's compact and it has the option of putting batteries I prefer this versus than charging an internal battery. Everything about it is great. I have nothing to complain about but like I said again, it is a bit of a learning curve. But there's a bunch of YouTube videos that help with that so take it slow. Don't be in a rush with this thing. There's a lot to learn. It has a lot of built-in effects in it, which is a great The quality of the device. The speakers are not the greatest in the world, especially for low frequencies. It's not strong enough. It's a nice option to have if you don't have headphones on you at the moment. But I do suggest getting a stand cuz looking down at it for a long time especially with the small screen will hurt your neck after a while also getting a case for it cuz it doesn't come with one and get some good headphones. It's a great device on the move, especially if you're the type of person that does a small little room parties. This would be great! Hell I think if you get the right system you can actually use this as a great combo with speaker or audio system. Or like I said, again in the beginning a sp404 Mark 2 mix with it. But overall this is a great quality item and it's affordable. It's not really cheaply made. And this is a Christmas gift to myself so Merry Christmas to me on that. But yeah, I have no regrets on it. I'm actually thinking about picking up the Lo-Fi XT 12 after learning this device as well.

wonderfully fun drum machine; the tiny knobs are a bit stiffer than lofi12xt/smpltrek however and hurt my fingers after a while; so i may actually try to find some new knob caps but all the ones i see in the size this needs have indicator lines which irritates me since they mean nothing on a endless encoder; but its still a great form factor the tiny pads are better than fullsize pads on something like ableton move- atleast for repiable velocity response without having to hit it hard at all; aftertouch (a modulation source) can take a bit more force than id like; sound quality is good and the preset kits are good starting points to tweak the sounds from; you can save and load full user kits very easily and the os updates since lofi12xt especially in kit loading are great; wish theyd add that to lofi- one confusing bit is i had trouble getting reverb sends to work sometimes but i think i was just confused; you dont control that in the mixer on here (unless i missed a fn combo or something) great little box for my first standalone drum machines; the unique sound engine makes it pretty flexible and things can get wild if you want i had some odd issues with quantize recording but im probably just rusty on the workflow; i hope sonicware will do a firmware update this year with a few new features but its a complete and stable box as it is; atleast in my experience; it would be nice if the line input did something besides passthru monitoring; same with the mic; but maybe those arent even actually setup to do anything really in the system; it would be cool to map the A/B parameters or whatever from the mixer to the L/R volume knobs if theyll never do anything else anyways; but maybe those arent even exposed to the os anyways i adore cydrums its mostly extremely easy to use just like lofi12xt; great form factor and pads and screen; intuitive gui thats clear to understand 99$ of the time; and i shouldve gotten it last year; hope to make some neat stuff with it :)

I was skeptical even after my purchase there was a touch of buyer's remorse but that soon dissipated when I looked deeper into the controls of this thing. It's way more powerful than it looks. If you know what you are doing you will master it pretty quickly and if you are a novice but a serious beatmaker you will learn a lot from deep diving into the manual. I recommend using a decent set of studio monitors and a sub woofer to see just how good this thing can sound after some adjustments. The only two flaws I can think of, 1: the built in speaker isn't great, figure out how to turn it off. 2: You cant load samples into it as it's entirely synth based. No doubt people will design some patches for download if they havent already. Either way there is plenty to work with.

I really wanted to find a machine that matched my volca drum in sound shaping capability. The Cydrums is an absolute home run. Having a huge wave form table, with very deep editing. You can also side chain internally, as well as adding other effects. Effects can be localized to the channel. It can go from tame to wild metallized sounds and anything in between. It takes a little bit to learn the UI. Some features you'll pick right up, while others may take some manual references. There are some who say they wouldn't use it as their only drum machine, I think more accurately I wouldn't think of it as a rhythm or groove machine but strictly as a percussion machine. It is uncharacteristically amazing there.
