Short review: This amp provides plenty of power for most uses. It sounds good to me. It is minimalist in that it is tiny and has only the two most common input types: analog RCA and bluetooth. There are some EQ presets and the ability to have bass and treble adjustments. If you need an amp to run a single pair of speakers from either line level stereo input via RCA, or Bluetooth, and you want a simple solution that has a remote, this does the job at a reasonable price. The sound quality is very good for what it is, at least in my opinion. The claimed power is 100 watts per channel, but that's with 2 ohm speakers. I suspect most people will still be happy but I would guess the actual power is probably quite a bit lower with most speakers. I am using this with a pair of Micca RB42 bookshelf speakers. The Miccca RB42 is a small bookshelf speaker rated for 100w per speaker. Micca says they are "4-8 ohm" which I assume means they are somewhat between those values but I'm not sure. With the volume set at 80% the sound is quite loud without noticeable distortion. For normal listening a volume closer to 40 is plenty loud in my space. I have a little streaming box hooked up to the line in for background music and it works very well for that. I can switch it to Bluetooth if I want to play some music from my phone. The amp itself is small. Similar in size to a pack of playing cards. The power supply is a brick that's actually bigger than the amp itself. The amp has four banana plug/wire lugs that are fairly close together. If used with wire instead of banana plugs, wires coming out one side somewhat block the power jack but everything can fit together. There is a segmented LED display and a single knob/button that controls power, volume, EQ, bass/treble boost, and bluetooth selection. There is a remote that also provides access to the same functions. Bluetooth works but it does have some issues to be aware of. It doesn't seem to honor Bluetooth volume control so for example when connected to my iPhone the volume on the phone controls the volume from zero to whatever the amp is set at. There have been a few times where I had the volume adjusted for bluetooth mode and when I switched to line-in the volume was way too loud, and I think that is made worse by the lack of bluetooth volume control. Overall it's quick and easy to set up, works well, and it works well at a reasonable price.

I have enjoyed this set up thus far in my home gym. I haven't pushed it super loud because of the speakers I've got attached are really just satellite speakers from a HTIB. I suspect this really shines best in a desktop set up, where a sub isn't needed and you're never blasting out the tunes. For the price point, it's hard to imagine better performance. Currently, I'm using a roon endpoint run through a SMSL c200 headphone amp (solely for its DAC) with analogue outs to the SMSL S1 RCA inputs. That provides it with a very clean signal. I haven't tried bluetooth connectivity to this unit, as I much prefer to have a higher bitrate from Airplay 2 or similar lossless means. But in a pinch where, say, my network went down, it's nice to know it's there. This unit scored really well in scientific testing of its performance, as an internet search would quickly confirm. I have fairly sensitive hearing for music and can (unfortunately) hear the difference between high end audiophile stuff and consumer grade kit. For a desktop and/or budget set up, this is really hard to beat.

The SMSL S1 is a compact but powerful amp that’s perfect for a small room. I’m using it with a pair of bookshelf speakers in my bedroom, and it has more than enough volume and clarity. Setup was simple — Bluetooth paired instantly, and RCA inputs work great with my DAC. Sound quality is excellent for the price. Bass and treble controls are responsive, and the EQ presets are actually useful depending on what you're listening to. The remote is a nice touch, especially for volume control from across the room. If you want something small, clean-looking, and easy to use for a desktop or bedroom system, this is a solid choice. Great value.
