I got this watch for my 11 year old son and he enjoy it. He is able to track his sleep and steps without it being hooked up to a phone. You do need a phone in order to download new wallpaper. Overall it's a nice purchase for a child who play sports and like to track their activities.

Works fine for what it does, but doesn't really do that much so your recipient is likely to be disappointed (even if young). It shows time, can store and play music, and takes potato quality photos, but that is really about it. If you're wanting to stave of your young one from an actual smart watch this will actually make it worse. I tis small, light weight, and holds a charge well, it just is not very smart. The pricing should be a good indicator of what it does, but really think about what you're getting and see if it makes it worthwhile

I selected this specifically because I was looking for something that would function as a watch and step-counter for a child without the "screen time" or distraction problem so many of these devices have - games and distractions that make them impossible for a child to functionally wear places like school (not that a step-counter is not a distraction but in comparison to a watch loaded with stupid games, it's quite minor). You will need to pair with a smartphone to have the date/time, and it looks like there are message and call forwarding capabilities as well as the ability to play music from your phone through the watch. Also alarms, camera, "sedentary reminder", and "rise to wake" (as well as female menstrual cycle tracking if you need that). But it looks like if you are in fact giving this to a child you simply do not enable those functions. There is a sleep monitor, pedometer, stopwatch and timer, and sport modes that look like they function independently of the smartphone, which is what a kid will want and use it for. The instructions state that you need to pair the watch with the app to set it up and once you do that there's no need to keep it connected to the phone to function; it will still track real-time heartrate, steps, distance, pace, exercise duration, and calories burned without the phone. Overall the focus is on fitness which is better to encourage activity rather than screen time, and there are activity "modes" you can select from. I like the fact it will do the exercise functions without a phone which means it can be gifted to a kid without one and still function as an "adult" like watch without the hassle of distracting games. The instructions seem comprehensive and this seems like a pretty basic device so I am hopeful it will be well-received as a gift. When I know how well it works I will come back and see if it gets that extra star.
