The wood is very smooth and nice to touch, all the pieces fit together nicely. It is heavy because it is made of genuine wood. The set itself is very cute and self-efficient. This train is fabulous however it's Christmas Day and I put the batteries in and the engine won't work. I tried THREE new packs of batteries, definitely the train. Stinks because our four year old is beyond disappointed and we already have the track set up. Hopefully, customer service will just send us a new engine because breaking the track down now is not an option and this already put a dark cloud on Christmas morning. If you buy this, TEST the engine before you gift it. The rest of the train is well crafted and the track is fun!

Good quality set - IF its main item (blue Smart Tech Train) would work! We tried 6 new batteries, the train is not turning on. My 3yr old is beyond disappointed. Me too. $280! I emailed Brio/Ravensburger customer care with a video showing the defective item and asking for a replacement train. Would not buy the set again. I knew others complained about this issue before but i naively hoped our train would work.

Mine works great, no issues with train or interactive pieces. Love this, versatile, well made, and The wooden tracks are smooth, cleanly cut, making them easy to connect together. You get multiple train piece, but only one motorized train. You also get some construction equipment and people. Several of the piece are the standard items you would expect in a set this size, train station, bridges, “mountain” highway tunnel, and a crane for unloading freight and transferring the construction vehicle. Cool feature is these electronic tunnels that interact with the chip on the train and give it directions like stop, sound horn and reverse. There are multiple places to mount, and they’re interchangeable. I will say the first time setting it up, I followed the instructions (which is a single page diagram) and it was so frustrating and took me forever. I only set it up that way once because it wasn’t worth the effort, and you can set up in different combinations faster. I feel like brio needs to take notes from the hot wheels track sets and use a number/letter system on the track itself to help make assembly easier. The elevated portions do have a tendency to come apart, even with the supports. Our three-year-old has a little sister who isn’t exactly gentle with the track, and causes a lot of derailments by bumping/moving the tracks, causing the pieces to disconnect. I highly recommend getting some track clips to help secure pieces together. This will allow you to achieve more unique designs, with more durable construction, which means less derailments, and less frustration. The price tag is hefty, but the prices are quality, and the electronic features are neat. More plastic pieces have been incorporated, but considering the moving prices, and chip interaction, this is necessary. We incorporate plastic in our play so it’s not an issue to us as long as the quality is there.

The media could not be loaded. This BRIO Smart Tech Deluxe set is a complete and durable playset that is built to last. It features several innovations to sets from previous years; including the spacers that separate the track into two, the "mountain" track that now includes a center component to hold onto the wooden track piece and the "Smart Tech" interactive plastic pieces. The set arrives in two reusable plastic tubs with plenty of space for additional pieces if you already have a set or will be purchasing more BRIO pieces in the future. These pieces are top-of-the-line in wooden train sets and you receive enough pieces (tracks, people, decorations, etc.) to create a very interactive and detailed train "world". The set arrives with a map to create the suggested "world" with every piece provided but the fun of this set is that there is enough to build any sort of setup you can imagine. One issue that brought my review down to four stars is that the main Smart Tech train was difficult to get started. It arrives without batteries and although the batteries we installed were brand new, we could not get the train to start at first. After removing and replacing the same batteries in the train, it was able to turn on but initially had difficulty remaining on. After a few moments of pressing the "ON" button at the top of the train, we were able to get it to work consistently, as demonstrated in the attached video. It is possible to have your train working but it does take some patience and restarting with the initial battery installation. The Smart Tech pieces include a station where the train docks and "tunnel" pieces which cause the train to interact (such as reversing, flashing different colors, making a noise, etc.). The train has a lot of power, enough to continue along the track regardless of incline or turns. It can pull along several train cars and the path can be changed by flipping the red guiding piece on the split tracks. This set is a wonderful collection to begin your family's train set or to add onto an already established set. The BRIO wooden pieces are the most durable and quality-crafted but are also compatible with other brands. This classic, interactive toy is one that will continue to entertain regardless of the age of the child and can also be fun for the entire family. With a starter set such as this, regular add-ons can be great gift ideas for the future. I would definitely recommend this set.
