This is my review of the Smallrig VK-30 Vlogging Kit tripod with light. I have not used one of these before. I am an amateur photographer so I have full-size tripods available to me when I need to set up a camera to shoot unattended. How's this little one work? For starters, it's very light. I was concerned that the light would be heavy considering it needs to have a battery inside it to power the light. But the battery must be small because it really doesn't weigh much at all. It's easy to attach to the tripod (mostly - the plastic set screw is a bit small to get tight) and it's easy to carry around. The attachable light has a white light diffuser that can be wrapped around the light and mute the amount of light coming from the LEDs in the light. I also like the fact that the color of the light can be adjusted to a more warm tone if you choose so you don't have to stay with the harshest white light coming from the LEDs. The phone clamp is easy to use. There's just a simple spring that clamps onto your phone and holds it tight with the rubberized friction pads. It's simple and will likely fit nearly 100% of all phones on the market (iPhone, Android, anything else?). We use Android phones in our house and they fit fine in the clamp. The tripod itself is probably the weakest link in this setup. It's super barebones. The ball-head on the top can be loosened and tilted to any number of positions quite easily. It's all plastic so I don't have any idea how it will hold up but it's serviceable. The legs of the tripod are the thing that I like the least. They only open or close. There is no halfway adjustment and no way to lock them in place. So you must rely on the ball head to get your camera/phone in the exact position you want it. And when the legs are open this is pretty short. With a phone on the tripod the entire setup is barely a foot tall so don't expect to get this tripod high up on its own. Still, that's definitely a plus when you are carrying it around. The tripod legs are smooth and easy to hold and I think there are magnets in the legs to aid in keeping the tripod closed (though they are quite weak and it's hard to tell if these are actual magnets or just metal clips to keep things aligned). Overall, I would call this rig good for a beginner. There's nothing flashy about it and there aren't any extras apart from the light diffuser. But it's super easy to use and it's lightweight to carry around. I would say anyone just starting out in vlogging would find this useful. I could also see people who are casual vloggers or just need a simple tripod with light for their phone. This is inexpensive and would easily work for simple setups that don't require anything more than your camera on your phone. I will say that there is another slot on the other side of the phone clamp that could be used for a microphone. If you are serious about vlogging, then I would recommend getting yourself a good microphone to go with this vlogging rig or one like it. A good mike goes a long way to getting better sounding video. Removing a star for the looseness of the tripod legs and the difficulty in getting the set screw on the light tightened enough so it wouldn't fall off. 4 stars for a decent product useful for a beginning vlogger or occasional user.

I don't have a selfie stick or any kind of a vlogging kit, but needed one. The phone clip is really well made, as is the light. The light is adjustable and it works great. The tripod is good. It can be used as a selfie stick, if needed. The price is not bad for what you get here. Plus the parts can be mixed with other items you have. The phone mount can be put on anything with a standard tripod mount, etc.

So first off, for my uses this will work fine. I work remotely and teach technology at times (the photos are my "home office") and I really love the diffuse light this rig offers. It's also nicely sturdy, a definite improvement over the rig it's replacing. I ran into a couple of issues: first, the telescoping stand was very tricky to extend. I finally figured it out - you have to give it a really good pull - but there's no locking mechanism for the extension. I'm hoping it stays firm, but we'll see. Second, the light is a bit finicky to turn on and off, but once it's on you can set the dimmer or warmth easily with a rotating button on the back of the light. Finally, the instructions are only for the light, not the stand, and for the light you have to have very small fingers to tighten it onto the holder on the stand. Note - in spite of the images in this ad, there is NO microphone included. So, if all that works for you, it's a decent rig for a beginner.

The tripod is fine and feels heavy duty for something so small, but where this kit shines is the light that comes with it, and the clamp for your phone. The light is very bright, the button and wheel for dimming are nice and smooth, plus it comes with a silicone cover as a diffuser and it all feels well built. The phone clamp is easy to use and better than anything I've had before where you have to pull apart the 2 sides to get your phone in and pinch your fingers. This makes it way easier and smooth to get your phone in and out

I really like this kit. The stand is very sturdy and easy to use. The clip for phones turns in any direction and is strong so your phone won't fall out. It expands enough to hold large phones, but not tablets. I love the light that attaches to the side. It has a bright light that is easy to dim. It also lets you change the type of light from white to blueish to yellowish - again with the ability to brighten and dim the light. This is perfect for shooting quick videos, taking selfies or holding your phone while you use FaceTime or Zoom.
