  • Awesome.
Size: VA-5 Fluid Head
It’s so amazing how smooth it is. Especially on a spotting scope. When you find something and lock it down. Next time you buy you should definitely try one of these.

  • Quality fluid head designed for an unmet need, but flawed by a poor clamp design
Size: VA-5 Fluid Head
This is a well-made fluid-damped video-style tripod head that would meet the needs of many users of both spotting scopes and long lenses with tripod collars if it did not have a poorly designed clamp for Arca-style quick release plates. There is a potentially large market for a quality tripod head meeting the needs of birders and other wildlife watchers -- including smooth one handed pan-tilt ("2-way") motions while maintaining a level horizon and compatibility with the "Arca-compatible" quick release plates that are becoming a de facto standard among wildlife and nature photographers. It is a puzzle that there are so few (any?) on the market. -- The US Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that there are more birders than gardeners in the U.S. Spotting scopes are standard tools for serious birders and wildlife watchers, and are, of course, also useful for some sports, star-gazing, target shooting, and a variety of other outdoor activities, Most wildlife watchers also regularly exchange scopes with some kind of telephoto still camera both for standard nature photography applications, and sometimes to document rare species observations or to gather scientific data (hence the need to accommodate the Arca plates that have become so standard for nature and sports photography that the Arca taper is actually incorporated into the tripod foot of many "super-telephotos".) I note that there are many excellent fluid-damped video heads in the same price range, most using Manfrotto-style sliding plates, and many birders use those, but there are equally few stills-oriented heads (ball, 3-way, or gimbal types) that use the video-style plates. I know a number of wildlife watcher-photographers who live with the two incompatible systems, but always with much grumbling. The popular quality ball-head designs work poorly for this application, since it really takes two hands to both aim and control the tension for smooth movement, and insufficiently tightened heads are prone to flopping in unpredictable directions, losing level horizons and often banging expensive equipment. The popular gimbal heads work better, but are large and expensive -- overkill for a spotting scope. The simple pan-tilt design found on many inexpensive tripods can work OK, though smooth motion is harder, but most are too flimsy to entrust with heavy, expensive optics. Gitzo has had a quality head designed for birders available for many years, but its older design did not use a standard QR system, but only came out recently with a version that uses a (somewhat) Arca-style place. Like its competitor from Gitzo (which is larger, heavier, and more expensive) this fluid head is made of quality materials, solidly constructed, and smoothly simultaneously pans and changes its tilt (to track moving subjects) without binding or skipping. The main problem with both is that they don't really adopt the version of Arca-style plates used by many other high end and quality mid-range tripod makers (Really Right Stuff, Wimberley, Acratech, Benro...), following a specification published (I think) by Really Right Stuff, since Arca-Swiss itself doesn't seem to have ever done so. In the RSS specification, used by many suppliers, removable anti-slide screws are added to the end of the long axis of most longer places. These slide into slots machined in the ends of the clamp of the head, and provide an extra protection against equipment slipping forward or backward off of a loosely clamped scope or camera. Neither the Sirui nor the Gitzo care compatible with this system, and require the screws to be removed, losing a vital protection for your gear. The Sirui clamp has additional flaws. Unlike any other Arca-style head I have seen, it does not have a moveable jaw on one side (which is tightened with either a screw or lever), allowing for both top-loading and binding the entire length of the taper when tightened. Instead, the Sirui has fixed sides, and uses a (wimpy) screw, with a small bar on the inside end, to grasp only the very top of the taper. The result is that plates need to be slid in from the front or back, which any protrusions will block. The fixed jaws allow little play for adjusting to variations between plate designs, and the grip on plates is very localized and weak. Some standard plates (including from Gitzo!) aren't gripped at all, nor are tripod feet with just the taper rather than a groove with the taper on the bottom. The result is unworkable for group field trips where multiple users may switch equipment, and frustrating for advanced users who also have tripods with other quality heads (RSS and most other high-end ball heads, the classic Wimberley gimbal head and most other similar designs). I can only hope Sirui will fix the problems in a redesign, but I can't recommend the head to many of the intended users due to its incompatibility with other equipment -- Sad, because the quality is otherwise high and the head is reasonably priced. Meanwhile, like many others, I am still waiting for a top quality video head that works with all other popular "Arca-style" brands, and is light and reasonably priced. ... show more

  • Decent for the price
Size: VA-5 Fluid Head
I purchased this video head for the purpose of using with a spotting scope viewing western big game, and using to video and photograph through my phone and camera. First, I've been through several video heads that didn't make the cut. I've bought, sold, and given a few away. This is the most expensive video head I've purchased which isn't saying a lot. It came recommended from other's digiscoping that thought it worked pretty well. And it does work decently but it takes some getting used to. I have enjoyed the video head. However as mentioned in other reviews, the clamps are poorly located, as is the panning knob to lock or unlock to move the head. It's somewhat smooth but not as smooth as I'd hoped it would be, and struggles a little when trying to lock the tilt in place with a spotting scope on it. I often times need to lock my scope in a little higher so that it compensates for the movement after I lock it into place. It works fine for now, but I will likely sell this down the road and get a better video head for what I am doing and buy an Outdoorsman video head. It does pair nicely with a Promaster carbon fiber tripod. If your budget is within this price range, I would recommend this fluid head. If you have more money to spend, I would look a little further into other options. ... show more

  • A very well made, but pricey, video head
Size: VA-5 Fluid Head
This is a very small, lightweight head that is smooth in both the pan and tilt functions. It is arca-swiss compatible. That is, unless you use a Cotton Carrier plate which is ever so slightly too big for the unit. I don't know if this is the fault of Sirui or Cotton Carrier. I remedied the problem by attaching an arca-swiss adapter plate to the plate that comes with the unit. I don't do video, but I like the convenience and stability of a video (or pan) head for shooting still photos. It is much easier to lock the camera in on the target than when using a ball head, which I find too wobbly in most situations. There are a lot of video heads that cost considerably less. I have tried several with varying success. If you are up to paying the price, you will be very happy with this unit. ... show more

  • Great product...but the packaging from the seller wasn't great!
Size: VH-10 Fluid Head
Great product, love the smoothness of the head, typically great Sirui product we've come to know. My only issue is how the seller shipped it. (see photo) The original box was not in another box for any protection like most shipments (especially global) but the box itself wasn't even sealed. Anybody could have opened it. Heads are a somewhat delicate item and shouldn't be bashed around. ... show more

  • Learn how to use this
Size: VA-5 Fluid Head
A lot of people are writing reviews about this head saying that it has a poor clamping system on the plate but if you knew how to use it you would know that it is an arsenal clamping system. grab the ear that you spin to tighten the plate and pull it out while turning it you will figure it out from there this is an awesome head ... show more

  • The vertical damping works great for this scope
Size: VH-10 Fluid Head
I use this with a Swarovski ATX95 spotting scope. The vertical damping works great for this scope. Wish the horizontal panning and plate lock levers were a bit larger. And the plate can be difficult to slide into the head at times. First copy (at the time only $200US) developed a bit of a wobble. A tiny screw fell out of the threaded tripod socket when I took the head off the tripod legs. Returned it to the US distributor (Aragraph; I had to pay return shipping) The 2nd one works fine. I now remove the scope from the head when transporting the tripod/scope in a vehicle. This may prevent future occurrence of the problem. At the current price of $250 I would likely go with the Manfrotto MVH500AH at $160.00 ... show more
