I was sewing the box seam on a lined tote bag and this machine noped right out of it. Apparently two layers of quilt weight cotton and two layers of very thin cotton lining was too much for it. The machine comes without a manual. Be prepared to search for and download the manual so you can use it. It's made in China so the picto- instructions are limited. Once you get it threaded, it does sew beautifully.

I've had a brother 1034d for a good while and wanted something that could handle a bit more so I went for the singer HD to match my sewing machine. This thing has a sharp learning curve. The threading is quite difficult because half of it is behind plastic that you can't reach or see but once you get the hang it's not too bad. I HATE that the presser foot lever is way in the back verses on the right side like the brother just makes it a bit wonky trying to put your fabric under while holding it up. All that said it REALLY CHEWS THRU SOME FABRIC. I haven't gotten stuck on a seam once and she is fast. I think once I use a bit more the threading won't be so annoying. ... show more

It’s difficult enough to thread, but when the color coded dot is missing…it’s even more difficult. I contacted Singer Customer Care, but it’s not on their replacement parts list, so no color dot forthcoming. The representative suggested I use paint, but for the price of this new machine, I don’t want to paint dots as they fall off. I might just return this serger and purchase a Brother heavy duty serger. Seems to be a quality control issue and I don’t want any surprises down the line. Reading reviews, the Brother brand seems to have been a better choice. ***After being a loyal Singer owner and user for over 50 years, I was just not happy nor confident with the quality of this Singer serger. I returned it and purchased the Brother Model 1034D Heavy Duty Serger for the same price. The Brother serger is more user friendly, has a built in carrying handle, easier to thread, comes with user manuals, and includes various accessories. I feel I got a better quality serger and alot more bang for my buck. ... show more

I learned that the default setting for an overlock sewing machine is 3333. Most YouTubers and official websites say so. But it's wrong. After tons of frustration, I learned one thing. Rather than the number, you should feel the tension while pulling each of the 4 threads. Finally, I made it.
