1) The dimensions listed on this product are totally inaccurate. The actual dimensions are 25 X 65. The outside dimensions at the top of the bookcase might be 30 inches wide but you sure can't put books at top of the lip where it is 30 inches. The true dimensions of where you can put books is 25 inches x 65 inches. And the depth of the bookcase is only 12 inches. Hardly enough room to put large books. 2) They put these huge stickers on the inside of the bookcase. When you try to remove the stickers, it takes all the finish off the bookcase leaving huge bald patches. They couldn't have just added documentation in the instructions with the information? Now there is all these bald spots making it look like a cheap bookcase. 3) This bookcase is not worth $100 let alone $300. If I could send it back, I would. But I have thrown out the box that it came in and I don't know how to send it back. 4) It will only hold 60% of the books my old bookcase held. My old bookcase was damaged in the move to my new city when the semi was in an accident. My old bookcase was from Ikea. I should have bought another one from Ikea. At least I knew what I was getting and it was a reasonable price and it was a huge bookcase. 5) This bookcase is a piece of junk. Do not buy it.

Once you unpack this bookcase and start to assemble it, you will realize how substandard it is, but by then it will be too late to return it. SimpliHome Furniture is overpriced for the quality of the item and the frustrations you will encounter trying to put it together. (We paid $272.99.) Quality control at SimpliHome is Simplipoor. CONS: 1. Wood was split in a highly visible spot (eye level) when the factory pre-drilled a pilot-hole needed to attach the top. SimpliHome shipped the piece regardless. 2. Eyesore labels are pasted onto visible portions of the bookcase. When you try to remove them, the paper shreds, leaving parts of the label glued to your furniture. You can't use water or solvent to clean up the mess because that would damage the varnish. Other manufacturers print labels on plastic that peels off in one piece! 3. This bookcase should have been easy to assemble, but due to misalignment of parts, it was not. To get the allen key screws to “bite” you need to exert quite a bit of force - but it's hard to do using the little allen key provided. Fortunately Papa Bear has a small battery powered screwdriver with an allen bit that fits into these tight spots. Without it, assembly would have taken hours longer. 4. The backing is extremely thin - about 1/8 of an inch - and it is warped into a stiff curve. They punched holes around the edges of the backing, but didn't pre-drill holes in the back of the bookcase to receive the screws. The instructions say to “Use 20 Phillips screws roundhead to attach the back panel through guide holes to the back of the bookcase.” The screws are M4x15mm. We chose not to attach the backing, even though it might stiffen the bookcase. As any carpenter knows, driving screws into solid wood that is not pre-drilled risks splitting the wood. Also, the warped backing would exert force on the screws, possibly ripping them out of the wood. We purchased this bookcase to provide shelving in a walk-in closet. Since we are stuck with it, we consider it okay for that purpose. If we needed this bookcase In a place where we’d see it all the time, we would probably donate it to charity and buy something better. We own a much nicer, larger bookcase made by Ashley. Our local discount furniture mart has it priced at only $70 more (If you assemble at yourself) than we paid for this SimpliHome piece. We wish we had bought another Ashley! I hate to write such a negative review, but I hope it will serve to warn others not to make the same mistake. Thank you, all my fellow reviewers, for sharing your wisdom. You help us immensely. This book case is as stated. It is solid wood. No particle board anywhere. Yes, as one review stated the back is very thin material however, with the top and bottom connected to the sides, all of which are solid wood and then a supporting shelf in the middle there is ample support. I have three other book shelves with the same type of backing, and they have been standing and loaded with books for the past ten years, and no problems of any sort. The finish is very smooth and attractive. Im looking forward to many years of service from this bookcase. And to find something like this made of solid wood although not a hardwood, is very rare especially at this price.

I purchased this product as a bookcase for my living room. I used great patience in assembling this item together as per the accompanying manual. At completion, I noticed that the back panel was slightly too wide. When assembled, it creates a bow shape that can be seen when viewed from the front, looking inside. This bow shape in the rear panel is especially outstanding once the shelves are inserted on the support pins. Gaps can be seen between the back of the shelf boards and the rear panel. Additionally, most of the holes for the shelf support inserts are too tight. Some required the use of hard hammering, or great force, to put them into the side boards. Finally, the special additional sideboard holes for insertion of the tip-over prevention shelf support plugs at the top rear of each shelf are too close together, making it too tight for the shelf boards to accommodate the anti-tip over feature. Otherwise, the shelf boards fit into the case O.K. without using that safety feature.

This is really well finished and looks very stylish when assembled. We have it next to much more expensive solid wood furniture and it is not out of place. It is soft pine, so it needs to be treated with care as it will dent and chip much easier than real hardwood - but if you treat it nice it looks like a much more expensive piece of furniture for a fraction of the cost. It took us about an hour to assemble. I really like that they supplied extra hardware just in case.

I bought this solid wood bookcase because of concerns I had by reading negative reviews of mdf, particle board, or "manufactured wood product" units. I loaded all the shelves with books, many of them heavy and there is no sagging at all. It was easy to put together, all pieces were there, and it looks great. I am very happy with the purchase.
