This is a six-hole song flute--similar to the Tonette some of us played in elementary school. It plays a basic diatonic scale and can hit a second octave by blowing harder, though I struggled to get the top two notes to sound without shrieking. The tone is fine, not great, not awful, and it’s a decent starter instrument for a small child. The silicone makes it durable and dishwasher-safe, which is a big plus for keeping things sanitary. That said, I don't see this as something an adult might use. It lacks fingering control and has a very basic sound. And let’s be honest: the flesh-toned silicone was a baffling design choice. It looks… well, a lot like something else, and not in a way that’s going to go unnoticed in a school setting. Why not just make it in fun colors like blue, green, or purple?

The seller title is "Silicone Soprano Recorder Instrument for Beginners, 8-Hole Music Flute Instrument." Descriptive text on the page also calls this "an 8-hole design" which it is not. This recorder only has 6 finger holes!! It isn't an "8-hole music" instrument and shouldn't presented as such. One of the vendor pictures called this a "Silicone 6-hole c-key clarinet." The title on the page should say this instead of calling it an 8-hole music instrument. An 8-hole recorder has a 7th hole at the bottom of the recorder and often a thumb hole or thumb rest on the back of the recorder. This doesn't have a 7th hole at the bottom, or a thumb hole or thumb rest on the back. I got this for a kid to take to elementary school for an 8-hole recorder music class. All the other kids have 8-hole recorders. The teacher let me know this 6-hole recorder won't work for the class and called it a silicone tin whistle. It doesn't play all the notes that the other kids' recorders play because it lacks the 7th finger hole. It also doesn't play in the same key as all the other kids' recorders. There are many 8-hole silicone music recorders available on this site. All of them cost less than this one, sometimes 1/3 less. Many include a cleaning cloth, finger placement chart, and cleaning rod. This just has the cleaning rod. I gave this two stars because it has no odor, it's food-grade BPA-free silicone, and has a square base so it doesn't roll across or off a surface. It also comes apart into three pieces so it can be cleaned. It can be played, it just isn't an 8-hole music instrument recorder.

Got this for my 6-year-old, and it’s been a hit. It’s the right size for his hands, well made, and the sound is surprisingly good. It helped him pick up the basics quickly, and now he’s so inspired he’s already asking for piano lessons. Definitely a win!

This little flute has been amazing for my son. He’s only 8, but after a bit of practice he can already play simple songs. I like that it’s made from silicone—it’s soft, safe, and easy for him to handle. Honestly, it’s one of the few gifts that he uses every single day.
