  • With the Sigma 40mm, what I see is what I get.
Style: Nikon mount
With the 40mm sigma lens, we get what we see. Not only what we see with our eyes, but also what we see with our heart. Normally I like walking forward and backward to frame the picture with my eyes. Since the field of view of the 40mm sigma is so close to what I see that I don't have to use the camera to frame my pictures anymore. Another thing is, knowing that I could use all the aperture from 1.4 to 16 with full confident, it is up to me to decide how much is too much? How little to be in focus is just nice. The lens replaced my voigtlander 40mm and Voigtlander 58mm, which I sold at a small fraction of their price, just to get them a new home. The first picture I took with the Sigma 40mm on my Nikon D600, was the picture of flower, it was beautiful. ... show more

  • disappointing quality
Style: Canon mount
Very soft compared to the 50mm ART, even in the center. Extremely heavy and no optical image stabilization.

  • Well built beast
Style: Canon mount
It lives up to the price. Quick focus, very sharp images, and very well built. The only thing that is annoying is the lens cap doesn't fit the best.

  • The new "normal" lens
Style: Nikon mount
First, 40mm is an odd focal length. Too short for tight portraits, too long for wide scenes. But for full length or half length portraits or environmental portraits it works! And this lens is SHARP! From center to edge even at f1.4. Stop down to f4 and the resolution is just amazing! Zeiss Otus level amazing at 1/3 the cost. There are down sides however: it's expensive for a "normal" lens, at $1400. It's big and heavy. A 40 mm lens that weighs more than my 24-70 f2.8. And it has no vibration reduction function. But if image quality with autofocus is important to you, this is a lens you won't regret buying. I know I am glad to have it. ... show more

  • Exceptional quality professional prime lens
Style: Nikon mount
I would describe myself as an advanced hobby photographer, and not a pro. That said, I have only a few lenses and believe that the less the better - given obvious lens’ constraints in their size, weight, and general awkwardness when attempting to carry many (as some do in their photo backpacks). In my view, this approach is often too impractical, especially when travelling. With the above in mind, I searched patiently for an excellent prime lens in the “normal” focal length range. Without demeaning other lenses or manufacturers, this Sigma 40mm Art is a top of the line product, better than many lenses made by Sigma itself, and other well known makers, in all domains: its optical quality is exceptional, much sharper than competing lenses (many online reviews and tests are available which demonstrate its sharpness, brightness, color accuracy, etc.), its auto focus is quiet, accurate, and fast, and its build quality is first rate, including the design of the lens hood. Given its outstanding build and optical qualities, my takeaway is that Sigma intends this lens to be used by the most demanding photographers. I suspect that is the reason Sigma used a somewhat unconventional focal length for this lens (of 40mm) instead of the more common 35, 50, or 55; all done in an effort to separate it from the rest. There’s nothing negative that I can write, but to note the obvious. This lens is bulkier and heavier than comparable lenses. It’s also much more expensive. However, as above mentioned, I carry few lenses so this isn’t a personal limitation to me, but for those who carry lots of gear, this may be considered a disadvantage. Ultimately, like most choices, this lens is intended more for some than for others, depending on what is important: if it’s optimal image quality (this is a top contender) or a if it’s a compromise in optics for smaller size, weight, and a much lower price (there are many 35mm lenses f1.4 available). ... show more

  • Impressive!
Style: Nikon mount
Just received....and just like my sigma 85mm 1.4, it's sharp and AWESOME. I went back and forth debating to get this 40mm or the 35mm. Went with the 40 based off reviews and so far I'm glad I did. It's sharp....the compression, bokeh, are great. Very quick to focus.

  • This is a very sharp lens, great build quality but is also a boat anchor
Style: Canon mount
This is a lens, I have always wanted to try for its legendary sharpness. Now that I have it, I can certainly say its bittersweet. This is a monster of a lens in size, and weight, it feels very unbalanced with a mirrorless camera body. So much so, that i often leave it home in a padded bag when i go out to take photos. Part of the reason this lens is so cumbersome is because its actually designed for a traditional DSLR camera with a mirrorbox which i estimate adds about two inches of length to it It provides absolute flagship image quality though, so for someone willing to deal with its size and weight i highly recommend it. For people with deeper pockets id rather have a sony 50mm F1.2 or the new sigma 35mm F1.2 ... show more

  • As sharp as a non-cine lens could be
Style: Nikon mount
As sharp as a non-cine lens could be. It’s sharper than Sherlock Holmes himself! For reals, this thing is an anti-chromatic-aberration machine in 40mm. If you want to buy one lens and one lens only, this is it.
