  • Excellent book
Format: Paperback
The "Side By Side" series is a very good, conversation-based way to learn English. I am using Book 4 with a learner from China who has mastered basic reading and conversation and needs to expand her vocabulary and practice verb tenses. The book is filled with helpful lessons designed to have a student and tutor talking (and laughing) in no time. It uses current language including many idioms and tasteful slang expressions. The dialogs are set in real, useful situations and colorful, humorous illustrations make learning fun. Highly recommended for use with adults who can read well but need work on advanced verb tenses and new vocabulary. ... show more

  • Good system
Format: Paperback
Have really enjoyed using this series. The only suggestion would be to have the conversation examples printed in the book as a "fill-in" rather than completely worded. For example: A) I wonder why Charles ran by without saying hello. B) He must have been in a hurry. A) You're probably right. If he hadn't been in a hurry, he wouldn't have run by without saying hello. The students are to use this sample format when given different scenarios described by a picture, a prompt and a suggested "answer", like this: (prompt under picture) I wonder why the boss was so irritable today? (answer) be upset about something. The student must look at their scenario, then re-word into a dialogue that is exactly as shown in the example. We found this difficult as too many of the verbs and pronouns had to be changed and was confusing to our students. Once we provided them with simple "fill-in" blanks like this: A) I wonder why the boss was so irritable today? B) He/She/It (Student chooses correct pronoun) ____________________ (student inserts answer prompt). A) Your probably right. If He/She/It (chooses correct pronoun), ____________________ (inserts correct prompt), he probably wouldn't have been so irritable today. This made it much easier for our students to follow. All in all, we use the entire series in our weekly ESL classes. All levels seem to enjoy them and the extension activities are often fun and get the students comfortable with one another. ... show more

  • Wonderful Lessons in English Culture and Language
Format: Paperback
I love using this book with my ESL students! They seem to enjoy the activities and learning as much as I enjoy seeing the light turn on in their eyes when they fully comprehend the lesson being taught, and can take the lesson internally with them to use with confidence.
