  • Shure is a Sure Bet
Style: Standard
Superior in every way to the Rode Videomicpro, which I purchased some time ago. Took me ten minutes to figure out how to close the battery door on the Rode last week. That did it for me. The AA battery is installed on the bottom side of the battery drawer on the Shure. Shure even included a battery. The green LED power indicator turns red when battery level is low. Depending on battery type, you have varying amounts of time from the Red warning to change the battery. All options are very forgiving. You'll have plenty of warning to change the battery once the indicator turns Red. I did a wide by side test when I received the Shure. No exceptions, no conditions, no qualifications, the Shure is better. Not even close. Perfect design, functionality, build and durability. Superior in natural sound, low cut filter engagement, more gain, lower noise level, lower handling noise, smaller size, more side rejection, more battery life, excellent battery compartment access, recessed controls to reduce accidental changes in settings and power, attached cable is stronger and better attached, better cable strain relief, better shock mount support, better shock mount isolation, better and thicker coiled cable, you name it, Shure does it better by far. I would expect the Shure is better than the comparable Sennheiser, as some comment that Senn is a bit too thin for the sake of clear dialog. I like the fuller sound of the Shure, but not the boomy sound of the Rode. Shure is right in the middle, just right IMO. What would have been cool is if Shure had included a carrying bag or zipper case of some kind. BTW, the packaging of the product is as if it were an Apple product. Sweet. I've kept the boxes and packaging, although I can't imagine selling it any time soon. (The Rode is for sale.) A lot of my decision was based on reviews on this site and that "B" company in New York. I want to thank all the contributors for their honest appraisals which helped steer me to the right decision. Hope this helps you, too. ... show more

  • Problem solved!
Style: Standard
This has been an ongoing source of frustration. A few years ago, I purchased the Canon XA10 which has the removable handle with XLR inputs. The onboard mic is pretty good except it's very sensitive to wind. First purchase; an Audio Technica XLR shotgun. Good handling isolation, good base, but "dull" sound; kind of like you've got ear wax build up. Next, a Sennheiser shot gun with mini plug output. Not much base and easily distorted in loud environments due to lack of gain switch. Next up, Rode Video with the rubber bands suspension. Awful pick up from handling the cam, very poor sound isolation. Overly "bright" sound with poor base. Also susceptible to volume overload and distortion. I've been aware of Shures quality for over 40 years and thought I'd give it a try. WOW! Great cam isolation. If you handle the foam on the mic, very loud, touching the cam, very quiet. Put Walk the Line on the stereo and cranked it up. At 20 db with the cam's record volume turned down, some overload distortion. At 0db, much better, and at -10db sweet. Solid base, clear mid and high without "harshness". As a bonus, it's relatively small and unobtrusive. Would love some feedback on which wind sock to get, the Shure or knock off brand. ... show more

  • All around great mic with portable power.
Style: Standard
I was looking for something to swap in and out with my Zoom H6 and after much research I decided we would go with the Shure VP83. Sound quality is wonderful and have experienced no issues connected to the Canon M5. The sound quality is very similar to the H6 Boom Mic. This mic is very portable and built sturdy. We have experienced no movement sounds when using it for Vlogs. I would recommended this product to anyone looking to get a directional mic for interviews, vlogging, or recording special events. ... show more

  • As close to a flawless product as any I've used.
Style: Standard
I dont say this lightly. Im pretty demanding when it comes to equipment, but this mic just rocks. Its professional quality in all aspects, from the sound quality to its metal construction. I shoot with it on an L grip, which is probably not ideal since my hand is fumbling around nearby. That said, I have never once noticed disruptive noises being passed through the bracket as a result of standard camera handling, which is a testament to the dampening system. The battery life is another strong point. I almost forget it needs to be replaced, it lasts so long. And with a micover windscreen, I have very little issues shooting outdoors in a breeze. Honestly, there isn't anything bad to say about this little mic. It has performed flawlessly in plenty of professional shoots, and people are always surprised with the quality I get with "that little thing." Check out the YouTube tests if you need to. If you're a DSLR or dslm shooter with no xlr, this is the mic for you. ... show more

  • With the Shure VP83 LensHopper mic my Canon EOS 60D SLR takes video interviews with great sound.
Style: Standard
I purchased this product because it had three db settings and a robust effective anti-vibration mount. My Canon EOS 60D SLR has manual audio adjustment. I get good audio results with 0db mic gain and manual audio level on the camera set so that the peak audio is about -12db. The recorded ambient room background level was unnoticeable and the subject's recorded voice was strong and clear. I attribute this to the directionality of the mic. The mount is robust enabling me to keep the mic on the camera. Based on my initial experience with this mic I would recommend it to a friend with a camera that allows manual record level. Cameras that only have auto audio level recording are going to be problematical with any mic. Of course the camera must have provision for an external mic and a flash shoe. This mic is expensive compared to a different mic that may have competitive audio performance, so the decision to purchase was a budget stretch. I decided against the competitive mic because many reviews including Amazon reviewers said that the rubber band based vibration mounting assembly frequently came apart.. I like the promised battery life and the green LED that allows me to know that I have switched the mic on before use and that I have switched it off after use. The power slide switch has three positions. Down is off and either of the other positions seems to be on. [snip, followed by the following addition]--David posted the following information in his comment to this review: "The three positions for the power switch represent OFF, ON w/ low pass filter, and ON w/o low pass filter." ... show more

  • Practical and high quality
Style: Standard
Obviously, this microphone is a bit pricy, and it is honestly quite far in quality from my studio condenser microphone(AT2035) at roughly the same price, but for its intended purpose, this microphone is great. The built in shock mount works very well and the overall build quality is good. The sound is good but definitely not perfect. I appreciate how easy it is to take on and off the camera. One small problem I had is one that I don't really have any idea how to fix. The gain switch is far too exposed. When using this microphone during anything active, I found myself accidentally knocking the gain from -10 to 0 or even +10, which completely ruined the recording. The same thing sometimes happened when trying to reach for the off/on switch from the front side of the microphone/camera. It is not that I mistook the gain switch for the on/off switch, but that I knocked it out of position on the way to the on/off switch and did not realize. Overall, it has been a great tool, and what small gripes I have are easily overcome. ... show more

  • Robust, Feature Rich, and Amazing Battery Life
Style: Standard
Wow, this thing is incredible. I was trying to decide between this and the Rode VideoMic Pro and I'm SO glad I chose this one instead. The fact that it takes a single AA battery and runs for like 100 hours (bought it like 3-4 months ago and I'm still on the Duracell battery it came with). The shock mount is a zillion times better than the Rode version and the sound quality is perfect for what it is. It's much better than the Rode VideoMic (not pro) it replaced. I love the low profile and the METAL body--this thing is build to last. The low pass filter works great and I love the +10db setting so I just set my camera to a low manual volume and get cleaner audio. This should be getting much more attention in the video world than it currently does. I shoot weddings and this is absolutely perfect. ... show more

  • AUDIO PLUG BROKE ON SECOND USE
Style: Standard
I paid $200 dollars for this mic and in my second vacation trip with it, the audio plug portion of the cord broke. I have only used this mic on my camera on two big trips so far, so this is essentially the second time I used it.. I'm not going to hate on the actual sound quality of the product because this is a great mic, the noise quality from my trip to Paris/London were phenomenal. But for it to break on me in the middle of the vacation I just got back from, while I was traveling all over Japan hurt more than the actual cost of this item because I'm now left with memories of the terrible audio quality from my Cannon 80D. I would say if you're going to make this hefty purchase be aware of this and explore your options, I have really expensive equipment and keep my camera gear in a bag. It is a great product but for the audio plug to break on me in my second real use is completely unacceptable. I am now forced to spend a lot of money on getting another competitors mic which is very disappointing. ... show more
