Product well designed, great idea, but arrived defective. Wonder if, as the product is used, it will shortly become like the defective one we received. Plastic warped, paintbrush cover was unglued to frame, glue looked aged-dried, no longer held brush cloth to frame.

    • A roller worked better!
We purchased this Product to stain a brand new Covered deck on the cabin we are building for ourselves. It was about 80 degrees out that day, the first 2 swipes on the NEW wood deck the center piece broke! I put that piece in the trash, Then after about 3 minutes The Whole pad starts to fall apart leaving the pad pieces everywhere on the deck. I then walked over to my cooler and grabbed a beer to calm my nerves. This is a oil based stain by the way. Anyway, I enjoyed putting it in the trash where it belongs with the center piece. I then broke out an”old school” roller and finished staining the rest of our 600 sq. ft. Deck. The roller lasted the whole time. “Weird” I’m Not putting this product down or anything, just didn’t enjoy my experience with something that looks like a good idea. I probably was doing something seriously wrong, Even though I have 30 years of knowledge in painting? It could happen I guess. You can make the same mistake as me, spend your money on a cool / easy to use pad or just get a $2.00 roller to do the job. Happy Staining! ... show more

    • Not for every deck project
This tool saved me a lot of time staining my two-level deck (544 sq ft total). It helps to be gentle with the pad, preferably staining in one direction instead of back-and-forth, to minimize wear and tear on the groove utensil. Even then, the grove pad still tore off. Also keep in mind this tool is not fool-proof; the groove coverage can be inconsistent depending on the build of the deck floors. Wider grooves means one side of the board may not get stained. You will also want to avoid narrower grooves to avoid snagging. Ultimately, you will need to do touch-ups but it’s still preferable from bending down for several hours to paint grooves by hand. This product would be more ideal for smaller decks where the groove feature has a better chance of remaining intact for the project’s duration. (Also, shop around at the brick-and-mortars for a better price on the tool and refills.) ... show more

    • Great quality tool.
If you are staining or painting your deck, you NEED this tool. It will cut your time in half or better. I just replaced mine. I have used it for I believe ten years. Shur line nailed it with this foam spreader!!!

    • Disappointed
This is an amazing product.....when it works. I've had one before and it lasted through several deck stainings over the past 10 years. This tool is a great idea to make sure the stain does between the deck boards. I had to replace it because I had worn it out. But this one edition totally fails! The groove portion of the bad won't retract at all. The handle doesn't grab the center piece enough to move it back and forth. So you can't use it. So it's going back. Had to stain my deck without it. ... show more

This deck stainer has a groove tool, which cuts the work in half! On the down side, this item is frequently out of stock (I tried many online and local stores), so I'm concerned it may become discontinued. No! This applicator saves SO much time, even moreso than a roller...the only brush work needed is recessed corners. Clean-up is simple - just replace the pad. ... show more

    • Groove tool cover doesn't work well - comes loose very quickly
Like other reviews, I found that the cover came off the groove tool within the first 6 feet of using it. This was on deck boards with 1/4 inch spacing and semi-transparent oil stain. One star for that. I had to use a paint brush on a stick for the grooves. But the flat pad worked fine, so 4 stars for that. ... show more

    • Right idea, but poor construction
The center piece that is suppose to handle the "between the boards" is the right idea, but after a couple of passes, the piece fell of the tool. The piece was only glued on verses a small rivet or some other design that would secure the needed center piece.
