  • A simple and sublime illustrated story from Ghibli's Miyazaki.
The media could not be loaded. Reminiscent of Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke, while having many unique elements to make it its own story. Originally written, illustrated, and painted in watercolor by Hayao Miyazaki in tandem with Nausicaa, but only just now being released in English translation with this edition. The hero, Shuna, has a strong determination and singular sense of purpose that make it a refreshing and simple story. Nothing too intricate or difficult to follow, just a beautiful tale of a selfless prince journeying to find a grain to save his village, while saving a pair of sisters he meets along the way. Beautifully illustrated and fully colored, each page is a delight to read and flip through. It's more of a storybook than a full manga. Can almost be a children's book, except for a villain losing a forearm from a gunshot, and a slavery theme. I read it in one sitting and although it's a complete story, I wish there were more. But that's usually the way with anything Miyazaki. Just can't get enough! ... show more

  • Not bound for English readers
As shown in a 5-star reviewer's video, this beautiful book is bound on the right side, not on the the left as is standard with books printed in English.

  • Read this graphic novel!
Living in a valley yielding poor crops - SHUNA'S JOURNEY is about Shuna, the Prince of this barren land, who sets out West to find the rumored golden seeds. In his quest, he saves a proud girl named Thea, freeing her from captivity. SHUNA'S JOURNEY was published two years prior the launch of Studio Ghibli and generally overlooked. This story has plenty of remnants of 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind', so undoubtedly I had to love this graphic novel. Both Shuna and Nausicaä's worlds coalesce and share many concerns: desert landscapes, windswept kingdom, scarce natural resources and vast-tomb structures. The story is based on the Tibetan folktale 'The Prince who turned into a dog' and I was swept away by the tale about the stubborn hero, driven woman, traveler, healer, brutal nature, hunger and even yakul. With language as simple as a fable and detailed watercolor spread into the pages, it is magical, atmospheric and full of climax. This is a larger narrative about slavery and greed, drawing some parallels with many current countries that idolize Westernization. Some points remain unclear (including the underwhelming ending) and I hope these can be further developed in the future. The note from the translator at the end of the book is insightful about Miyazaki's intentions, inspirations and deep thoughts while shaping this story. In addition, it is very interesting how many elements in SHUNA'S JOURNEY are reflected in Miyazaki's later works. Finally, I read this book in one sitting and it made me feel hopeful. Abrupt and spare, this graphic novel pulses with rich ambiguity that Miyazaki's fans know well. If you enjoy Ghibli vibes like me, this book is perfect. And even if you're not into Ghibli, this book is still for you! [ I received a complimentary copy from the publisher - First Second . All opinions are my own ] ... show more
