Description

A friendly, hands-on training manual and reference for lighting technicians in motion picture and television production, this handbook is the most comprehensive guide to set lighting available. It provides a unique combination of practical detail with a big-picture understanding of lighting, technology, safety, and professionalism, essential to anyone doing motion picture lighting. The fifth edition delves into every aspect of lighting and features vastly expanded sections on controlling LED lights, color science, lighting control systems, wireless systems, Ethernet-based control systems, battery power, and modern set protocol for productions small and large. With a generous number of original images, the book illustrates the use of soft light, the effect of lighting angles, and how the gaffer and DP build an effective lighting plan around the blocking of the actors. This encyclopedic volume of technical knowhow is tempered with years of practical experience and a much-needed sense of humor. This is the ideal text for professional lighting technicians across film and television including lighting directors, gaffers, DOPs, and rigging crews, as well as film and television production students studying lighting, camera techniques, film production, and cinematography. It includes a revamped companion website with supplementary resources, forms, checklists, and images. Read more

  • A Great Guide to Lighting
If you want to get into set lighting this is the book. It breaks things down on a technical level,s o you can learn the craft, while also learning the technicality of set lighting. I always keep a hardcopy in my house and a digital copy on my phone just in case I need a quick answer in a pinch.

  • Must have for every Film Lighting Technician
Filled with facts, info and useful data. This is a must have for every Film Lighting Technician. Having owned several editions of Harry Box's Handbook, I have to commend his attention to detail and how current he stays with the ever changing trends in lighting technology.

  • I wish I’d found this book ten years ago
I’ve been working on sets for a long time, and learned a lot of these things the hard way. Having all of this knowledge in one reference has been very helpful as I try to fill in the gaps. It’s very well-written, current with technology, and smartly organized.

  • Interesting book but sent without any precaution
I'm not the first one who speak about this shipping problem for this book. It was sent in a bag without even a blíster. It arrived a bit torn out. Anyway, the book is interesting, but i was looking for lightning set up. I will learn a lot about electricity and dmx set up for sure with this one.
