I love my Columbian heavy duty self-adjusting bar clamps. I don't know why you can't find them anymore, probably because they were too good. They did not have or need the irritating ratchet mechanism to position the movable clamp on the bar. Genius design. I bought these to see if there was something out there to compare. The fit and finish on these clamps is acceptable. Cast metal clamps on a 3/4" high bar. The castings have nice crisp edges and a matte finish. The bar height is what makes these medium duty. The bar is around 1/4" thick which is a step up from a thin light duty clamp. The manufacturer claims clamping strength around 600 pounds. That's probably close. The screw pitch is coarse and the screw shank is plated. Holding the cases of two cabinets together, these work, but the bar begins to yield on large cabinets. Not sure if I trust these for cabinet installs, but for bench work and glue up, these are just fine. The handles are classic Bessey wood painted red.. they are small in my opinion but feel nice in the hand. These clamps have a coarse ACME thread so its strong but you probably can't crank on them much beyond the yield point of the bar. Overall I'm happy I have these, but I still want a high quality heavy duty clamp and thses aren't them. ... show more

At my local hardware store, these clamps are $15-$17 each, so this is a much better deal. I plan on buying a few more sets like this, and I've already gotten two. One can never have enough clamps. Even if you think you have enough, you probably don't.

I have cheaper clamps of other makes as well. But this one really makes lot of difference. I love to use them. Highly recommend.

The price is low because these clamps are small for light weight ise. If you need a normal clamp look else where. I love Bessey but this is kinda low end.

    • Bessey Not The Best
I've gotten the impression that Bessey is one of the best if not THE best clamp makers. Well, in my personal experience, this is false. Their F-clamps have a problem keeping their clamp jaw pads in place and the jaw is very stiff on the bar, hard to slide using the release lever. Their squeeze clamps are much better, but so are many other brands. My advice is to compare before paying the premium price that Bessey thinks their clamps deserve because IMO, they certainly don't deserve it. I'd look at Harbor Freight clamps before buying another Bessey. ... show more
