  • Impressive! Impressive!
Color: Brown
Wow! I've had several budget guitars in the 25+ years I've played and this one was a surprise. I bought the Redid RD-100 in brown. The finish looks and feels great. Only complaint on the finish is I would like to see the grain come through the color a bit more (grain is more prominent in the pics compared to in-person). Tuners feel fine and it stays in tune pretty well. The pickups were a big surprise. I usually switch out cheap pups with something else, but these sound really nice. I took some readings and the neck is 7.3k and the bridge 13.3k. I usually like the neck around 8k but the bridge is a little hotter than I look for. The sound is great, though. Nice, warm sound that I would expect from a guitar like this. I made a few adjustments out of the box; changed strings, oiled the fretbooard and adjusted the truss rod and action. After that it plays really nice. I also switched out the knobs for reflector knobs (I hate the look of speed knobs). I also threw some finger slicers(knob pointers) on. The only real con of this guitar is the pots. They worked fine from the factory, BUT they're the wrong taper. They used linear for all 4(2xvol, 2xtone) and it works OK for tone, but the volume pots are useless after 3 or 4. I switched them out for some logarithmic taper pots from The Art of Tone and the volume works much better. I'm just a guitar hobbyist player and I use semi-hollow for all types of music when I play; rock, metal, clean etc. This guitar does it all. Ask Larry Carlton. From Beatles chime to Alex Lifeson to Josh Homme you can't go wrong with a 335-style guitar. Overall, this was a very satisfying purchase. ... show more

  • Nice cheap guitar
Color: Black
A very nice guitar for the price. Beautiful finish. Nice neck, fretwork was good, intonation spot on. Decent set up right out of the box. Pickups sound pretty good, electronics work well. Nice binding, even on the f-holes. Worth the money in my opinion for a good guitar.

  • Just what I wanted, looks good, plays well and has the necessary tone out of the box.
Color: Brown
Pretty, finish is near perfect except for the abrasion across the top of the headstock from rubbing in the box. The guitar tuned right up and played well and had a pretty good sound. I purchased this guitar to modify. First I changed the pickups, the ones from the factory are fine though, then I swapped out the tuners with a set of Grovers off an old broken Gretsch, big improvement, put on a Tusq nut, small improvement, then I strung it up with a new set of Ernie Ball strings and this is now a little marvel. The pots and switch work well enough I didn't change those. All in all, I would buy another one. Great for a beginner, it plays easily and sounds fine and can be gig ready for the road with little cash or effort. My first guitar was a mess and had only one sound, screech and cut my hands and hurt my fingers, that was in 1963 and a lot has changed since, I really don't know how you do it, I make most of my own guitars (Teleholic) and the minimum I spend in parts for a build is near 300.00. This is not a high end Gibson or Ibanez, but it does play like one now and sounds almost as good. I can take this anywhere and play it confidently and not worry if an accident claims it. A good acoustic, a demon rocker, a buzz saw slide guitar and smooth jazz tones what's not to love. ... show more

  • A very good guitar for a great price
Color: Green
My RD-100 came somewhat flimsily boxed, but was in one piece, thankfully. It looked great out of the box but i had to cut the nut slots lower and intonate it - two things that are to be expected on these budget guitars. The frets were level and in good shape. The neck had slight relief, which i like, and i was able to get the action as low as i like it without any buzzing. The humbucker pickups sound ok. I might replace them one day, but i truly don't think it's worth the hassle right now - time will tell. It's a tough job changing pick-ups in a semi-hollow body guitar and these seem ok, so far. The tuners are cheap (to be expected) but are working fine. I'll probably change them out for some $30.00 Guyker locking tuners here on Amazon, eventually, but for now i'm having no problems with them. These make great studio guitars once you set them up as you like. I don't think i would want to take them on the road for very long - they might not stand up to all that abuse over time. All in all, a very good guitar (once you set it up) for an unbelievable price! ... show more

  • Passable guitar but not great, cheap and/or faulty pickups
Color: Green
Back around the year 2000 I had an Epiphone 335 (I believe it was the dot) and really enjoyed it. I felt nostalgic and bought one of these because of the low price point, hoping it would be similar. It is and it isn't. The guitar sounds pretty good, until you directly compare it side-by-side with other, nicer guitars. Once I did so I decided immediately I had to replace it. The biggest issue (aside from normal things like adjusting the truss rod etc) is the pickups. They sound ok, but comparing them to other guitars in this price range they sound a bit muddy. The neck pickup seems to have a tone potentiometer issue. The tone barely changes when you turn it all the way. I compared it side by side to both a "Frankenstein" guitar I built with cheap singles coils and to a Gretsch Streamliner Jet Club with a single humbucker and both of them give a far wider range of tone control. When I first got the Redid guitar I was surprised by this lack of tone range and assumed the tone knob just wasn't wired, and didn't actually do anything. It does; just not much. Finally, the potentiometer knobs themselves are extremely cheap. I've removed knobs on a lot of guitars over the years, and these are the first ones I've encountered that broke while removing them. The plastic is extremely brittle and they were very tightly fit. Two out of four broke while removing them, and could not he reinstalled. The bottom line is that this guitar is pretty good, but the price point starts to overlap with much better instruments from much better recognized companies, like the aforementioned mentioned Gretsch Streamliner Jet Clubs. ... show more

  • Not just a good guitar "For the money" but an actual good guitar.
Color: Orange
Fit and finish was surprisingly good, no discernable flaws. Neck is straight, fret ends are dressed well. The setup out of the box was impressive, the only things I've done to the guitar (aside from tuning obviously) was to lower the pickup height - they were around 3-4 mm away from the strings and I prefer 6-7 - this is as simple as turning a screwdriver so no luthier skills needed. And I did find some excess buffing compound in the f-holes, cleaned up with a rag as I was wiping it down anyway. The instrument is beautiful, a pleasing orange color (as shown in the store page) despite the store page listing it as "yellow." The tuning machines are likely something I'll replace eventually but the 3-4 string split isn't excessive and it's holding tune well. All-in-all I'd have expected to pay 2-3 times as much for an instrument of this quality. It sounds, plays, and looks great! ... show more

  • Disappointing. Major fret problem. Disappointing. Major fret problem.
Color: Brown
Overall this is a very impressive guitar for the price. However, there is a huge, glaring defect. Every single fret is lifted off of the fingerboard in the center. The frets have a 12" radius. This is standard for a 335 type guitar. However, the fingerboard itself has a 16" radius. As a result, there is a large gap between the center of every fret and the fingerboard. I can fit a .008" feeler gauge under every fret. Because of this, the G and D strings sound dead along their entire length. This isn't a minor problem, this is actually major. Since the frets are stainless steel and are pre-radiused, no amount of pressing or gluing would seat them properly. It would have to be refretted. It is very unlikely that this is a one-off. I could certainly be wrong, but this is most likely a systemic problem and all of them are like this. Due to its price, there is a good chance many buyers would not even be aware of this. Redid/Grote needs to ensure that the fingerboards actually have a 12" radius, then the frets would seat perfectly. There were some other minor issues. The neck pickup ring was installed backwards causing the pickup to sit at an angle. Reversing the pickup ring corrected the problem. Also, the color is not what is pictured. The pictures show a matte brown finish with lots of wood figure. The actual color/finish is very glossy and reddish with little figure. The color doesn't look bad and this isn't the end of the world, but it's worth noting. Aside from these issues, the build quality is impressive. The hardware (tuners, bridge, tailpiece) is definitely the weakest link but for this price, it's hard to complain. The neck was perfectly straight and the truss rod functioned correctly. The pickups actually have dual coils. The pickups are wired such that when the switch is in the center position, if either volume control is turned off, both pickups are turned off. This is so unfortunate because this would be easy to remedy at the factory. I REALLY wanted to like this guitar. I didn't risk getting a replacement because I didn't want to have to return another one. Hopefully someone from Grote/Redid will see this review and address the problem. Maybe I'll try again later. ... show more

  • Very impressed with value of this guitar
Color: Brown
Guitar Geezer that's been playing for 50 years. When much much younger, played hard rock (Sabbath, Zepplin, Aerosmith, etc.). Started with a Les Paul clone (ca. 1969) that was close to unplayable. Neck was a disaster, 60 cycle hum problem that wouldn't go away. I gave up and saved every penny to buy a Gibson SG standard (Iommi pretender - stopped short of cutting off my finger tips). Played through a Music Man HD130 head and dual Acoustic 4X12 cabs.. Have owned many guitars over the years and can't wrap my head around the quality coming out of China and Indonesia on the affordable guitars these days. I ordered a Grote 335 in classic red and was actually dissappointed with the amout of work it needed to get it set up right (neck relief, fret ends, fret polish, fretboard conditioning, 2 loose pots, loose input jack, bridge humbucker was not square to neck, etc., etc.. After seeing many "it's-great-right-out-of-the-box" reviews on the Grote, I think I just got the unlucky lemon. I sold the Grote 335. I did some research and saw that Redid has the factory in Shandong that produces Redid, Grote, and Volgoa guitars. The Grote and Redid 335's look almost identical. I prefered the Redid brown (actually a rich, deep wine color) to the classic Grote red that I had previously. The Redid I received is in MUCH better condition than the Grote was. Fret sprout is minimal on 1st string side near body (easily fixed), truss rod needed minor tweak, some very minor finish flaws that are expected at this price point. Frets are level and dressed beautifully. It is a ton of fun to play and sounds fantastic through a tube combo amp. I've always wanted a 335 but didn't want to shell out the price they command. This Redid RD-100 is an absolute steal for the price and, based on my first experience with Redid, I can highly recommend this guitar. I no longer play with a band, but have started recording at my home studio, and the RD-100 has nicely filled a hole in my tone spectrum. As with almost any guitar (unless you are SUPER lucky or not particular at all) expect it to need some set up. The tuners on the RD-100 leave quite a bit to be desired, again as expected for this price, but I have lockers on order that will be a drop-in fix. I will probably also replace the nut at some point, but will spend most of my time playing and enjoying this affordable gem! Get one, you won't regret it! ... show more
