  • Impressive scooter
Pattern Name: Kick Scooter Style: Segway Ninebot ES4 Kickscooter
I bought myself one and my 10 yo boy another during the week before black Friday. Up until the snow this past week, we had been bundling up and riding all around our neighborhoods and in the city common next door and my oh my, I'm glad I got the ES4's. I have not had a single problem with either scooter. I even bought two spare batteries as there could be a time when we go into Boston or anywhere-really, and having the extra batteries would mean that no matter where we go, we'll be able to get back either to the truck or public transportation but when it comes down to it, even though the scooters are heavy, when they are not powered they can be kicked down the sidewalks or streets. The scooters are fast. My boy is 10 and on Sport mode, he can fly. He always wears a helmet and is a fairly accomplished dirtbike rider and skier so, I don't worry much about him being able to handle both the speed and power, which he has been. Even for me, the power is great. Fast enough on level ground and just enough for climbing steep and long uphills as we live in a neighborhood that is at the top of a series of hills or just one big hill in the city. Battery life has been impressive, but of course, the motors and batteries are new but still, even after a good 16 to 20 mile ride, we have never come home with less than 30% and we are on Sports mode the entire time and not trying to conserve the power at all, never mind that for to get home, we have to go uphill for quite some distance. I also have set the batteries to only charge to 90% and also have a spare battery for the just-in-case-future when the weather gets warmer and we can spend all day, all night riding around. The headlight is a very nice touch as are the lights underneath. The headlight is bright enough for riding in the darkest of nights, no problem. Having the option to have the mostly programmable light show lighting up under the deck of the scooter is a great way to see where the other rider is at night. I'm one that actually likes the electric brake that is the left thumb. My boy and I are still getting used to the power it has when turned fully on and even when using it at different rates when summoning up the braking power. By and large, I have never even needed to use the rear, friction footbrake as I'm never a fan of having to wear away my tire, just to slow down. At the same time, it just means that the electric brake has been more than enough to keep me out of trouble. That the electric brake is regenerative, even if the amount of energy returned to the battery is negligible, the fact that some power does get regenerated, and for free, and with no wear and tear on ANYTHING, is awesome. The spare battery on the post is a nice touch. It does make the post and feeling of the scooter different but once one gets used to it, like with anything else that people get used to, it is like there is nothing on the post. That we have the option to swap it out with another one we can carry in a backpack to get us another 10 or so miles so we can get back to the vehicle, is one of the big reasons why I chose the ES4. It is also super easy to change out the battery as the rubber bungs just get pried out, the allen wrench that came with the scooter to assemble the handlebars-which is a nice tool, a bigger plastic handled T-Allen wrench, the two bolts come out, the new batteyr goes on, making sure to just give the bottom of the battery a nice little fist bump to make sure the connections for the battery get connected and that is it. Plus, if we ever did drain the first set of batteries, we'd ride slowly, conserving the power to get either home or back to the truck so we don't have to actually kick-scoot back. If there is a knock, and one that my boy and I don't really mind, is that as the tires are solid, the ride is firm but easily tolerable. As we have all had Razor A5 kickscooters, compared to those urethane tired and non -suspended scooters, the ES4's ride on air. The suspensions both front and back are enough to help with the ride. There is definitely that front clacking when one hits the front wheel hard on a bump or crack, but if one is good, one just either avoids or, slows down for the bumps or cracks or, if one is really good, will just rear back and have the front wheel loft over whatever obstacle might cause the clack. My boy and I have gotten used to both the sound and how the scooters react over most terrain/pavement. The entire scooter, minus the external battery and the fenders, is Aluminum. It is heavy duty. The handlebar controls are plastic but, Segway sells the replacements for all the handlebar parts and it would take a 2nd story fall or full speed into a wall or barrier to bend the steering stem or the deck. Even all the LED lights under the deck are recessed well into the solid aluminum chassis. The build quality is all there, at least externally. I also like how most all the parts that make up the scooter are available. I can imagine eventually needing a new internal battery and maybe a front wheel motor but the other big reason I chose the ES4 is for all the replacement parts that can be gotten should wear and tear and time take their toll on the original equipment. My boy has about worn out his front tire after some 70 miles as he is only about 70 lbs so when he accelerates at WOT from a stop in Sport mode, he can get the front tire to spin up to speed as he is so light. Meanwhile, my front tire is still in decent shape and the rear tires have almost no wear at all. The app is good enough and shows me all I need to know and when the battery charger is plugged in, it will show where the batteries are with regards to %-left before fully charged. I'll also agree with the other review that has the battery bars as being hard to interpret with how much battery life is left where the app will give one the exact amount of %-left for the batteries. I'm glad I went with the ES4 as between the speed/top speed, nice acceleration in either normal or sport mode and the great range. When I go out for a ride, I'm going out for a ride and a 10 mile or less range was not going to cut it. That we can get a good 20 miles, on mostly level ground, not needing to go slow as cruising from 12-17 mph is almost effortless, and to be able to swap out the external battery in the field to get 10 more miles, the ES4 was a good choice. It has only been a month with the scooter and less than 100 miles. Once the spring comes and then summer and we can ride more and more and more, it will be nice if the scooters can go a few more years or even 5 years and the next generation of stuff with maybe more speed, more range and a lower price will come and I'll be 5 years older and gulp, the kids will be 14 and 15 years old. ... show more

  • Segway is unable to stand behind there product!!!!!!
Pattern Name: Kick Scooter Style: Segway Ninebot ES4 Kickscooter
It is important to know that I do not write reviews for various reasons. Most of the time when a person writes a review there is a motive behind it. I will give you my experience with my Segway ES4 drama. I bought two of these right after Christmas for my wife and I. I had done a lot of research trying to find the right one for us. I went thru Youtube and google reading every thing about most every electric scooters out there. Finally Segway was the choice. Amazon did there part in the process as advertised. The scooters were easy to put together and get charged in prep for the excitement one gets when a new toy is ready. It always seems like the waiting to use the toy takes for ever. After the first ride we where just happy as could be. I was so interested to see how long the battery would last. Being winter in the high country the cold wind forced us home before we could get get the full battery use. We plugged them both in and warmed by the fire hoping for better weather. I went out to check on the battery charging status and found one beeping at me and showing an error code 21, while the other was charging fine. I unplugged the beeping on and turned off the machine and restarted it, only to get different error code of 19. To the manual I went to see what these codes meant. the manual is little help but did tell me that the error codes had to do with the battery. I turned off the machine and went to bed frustrated. The next morning I checked the machine in hopes that the machine had fixed its self. It had not!!!!. I went to work thinking I would do research on the internet to find other people with this issue. There was some talk of the issue in forums with little resolve. There are videos on how to disable the machine, but nothing of a fix. Being a new machine with a SUPPOSED warranty I didn't want to dig to deep. Here is beginning of the Technical Support effort. I had the feeling that this was gong to be a painful experience, so grabbed a beer to help keep calm and began the phone calls. First try to the number it rand once then hung up. Cell phones don't help with keeping calm some times. Tried again to have the same thing happen. I had full cell service which made this less fun. Called my wife and she answered said phone connection sounded great. I sent an hour trying to call This technical support number. I went on line to verify the number and all checked out. Slightly irritated, I shot off aan email to Amazon customer support asking for help. Amazon resounded within an hour with the information of "Sorry to here of your issue, but we only are the pass thru people, but here is the information that might help with Segway technical support." This is the point that I start to realize that I might have bought a $700.00 heavy as hell kick scooter and not an electric one. To the internet again with no luck. I wrote and email to Segway tech support and filled out there forms with the hope that maybe someone would get back to me. To my surprise the next day I had a reply. "Sorry for your issue, we will get back to you in order as this is first come first serve bases." OK. Im in there system and I will wait for a response from a Tech. Yep, you seen this made for TV drama before were the reply never happens. SHOCKING!!!!!!! Mind you, this was now been three weeks. Back to the phone crap again, only to go thru the whole phone call answered and the hang up with no delay between. Now its personal. I was going to get ahold of somebody if it took all day!!!!!!! Holly Molly!!!! after a loooooooonnnnnnngggggg time I got the robocalls answering service. Shocked as I was I was not going to miss pressing the correct numbers. With a steady hand I began the oh so very painful process of "press 1 for this product, press 2 for this, and so on and so forth. Well you guessed it. I push the wrong freaking number, and the call hung up. OH MY LIVING STARS!!!!!!!!! my wife ran into the garage thinking I had hurt my self or had turrets or some thing worse. The frustration has now reached the red zone, and still rising. I called right back just knowing that I would be here for ever going thru this painful, awful and upsetting effort again. To my surprise I got right to the robo prompts straight away. I was able to get to the right place i thought and was greeted with the "please hold for the next available person". Yes, you would be right, I was using very unflattering language as I sat there on hold. I was not going to squander this effort, and was going to stay on hold, even if I had to do it all day. Finally a voice, a really human voice answers. I almost fell out of my seat. I began by telling the nice lady on the phone that I was not happy, and knowing that she had no idea what I had bee thru to get to this point, i wasn't mad at here but the evil Company called Segway. She said she understood and would do the best she could to help me as we started the tech support dance. I feel for these people that have to listen to those of us angry at the situation and not the person taking to call. With all that is me, I explained the issues. She sent an email to me and from there was able to send to here all the data I had collected to this point. Pictures, amazon email, emails to there emails which had all the dates and facts of the case. No I'm not a lawyer, but I have seen many on TV. Sticking to the facts, we conversed and I was given a case number. She would place me on hold while she had to check with her supervisor and what I could expect. NO I never talked to a supervisor. She finally said that the machine was under warranty and that the warranty people would call me with further instructions. Hell, at this point i was exhausted and took this at face value and hung up with her. Nice lady i might add. Yes!!! I have not received any communication from any stinking warranty department with in the time of 4 days. I sit here with the elusion that I will get somebody to listen or even help resolve this nightmare. Segway is not really going to do anything iI suspect. With the autonomous of the internet and the fact this piece of junk came fro China, i suspect I am screwed. As i watch my wife cruise the streets on my scooter, hers was the one broken, I hope this helps someone make there decision. PS. Hope my wife will bring me a six pack back with my scooter. ... show more
