Description

An expert on Eastern Orthodoxy helps readers learn how to read icons so they can engage Holy Scripture with greater depth and understanding. Learning to read Orthodox icons is an opportunity to engage Holy Scripture with greater depth and understanding. It allows viewers to uncover fresh dimensions and encounter the Kingdom of God from within the created world. The meaning of icons, which are often referred to as "windows into heaven," reaches beyond the limits of the natural world and into the divine realm. Eve Tibbs is an Orthodox insider and veteran teacher who has devoted her career to translating the faith for evangelicals. Her comprehensive yet accessible introduction to the history, theology, spirituality, and role of icons in Eastern Orthodoxy is followed by an immersive experience--a narrative journey through eighteen pivotal events in the life of Jesus Christ as depicted in the New Testament Gospels. Each event is illuminated through the form and color of Orthodox icons accompanied by descriptions of the messages they convey. Here "interpretation" works in two ways: to guide the curious, artists, students and even the lifelong Orthodox in interpreting icons and to show how icons interpret the biblical text. Seeing the Gospel presents a visual biblical language for a visual culture and even describes how icons can be used in other faith traditions. The book includes a foreword by Richard J. Mouw and features ninety full-color icons throughout. Read more

  • A wonderful introduction to Orthodox Icons
Format: Paperback
As a new Eastern Orthodox Christian coming from a Protestant background, I found Dr. Eve Tibbs’ Seeing the Gospel to be an invaluable guide for understanding the world of icons. Dr. Tibbs excels at illuminating the scriptural foundations embedded in iconography, showing how each image is not merely art but a visual proclamation of the Gospel. She strikes a thoughtful balance between the intellectual work of interpretation and the spiritual depth that icons are meant to convey. The book is richly illustrated with beautiful icons spanning many centuries of Orthodox tradition, allowing the reader to engage both mind and heart. Dr. Tibbs begins with a clear introduction to the theology of icons, including the historical debates that shaped their place in the Church. From there, she guides the reader through the major feast-day icons—from the Annunciation and Nativity to Christ’s Baptism, Crucifixion, Tomb, and Resurrection—revealing how each one expresses the saving work of Christ. Seeing the Gospel has helped me perceive more fully the beauty and theological depth present in icons. I am grateful to Dr. Tibbs for offering a book that truly reveals the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the sacred art of the Orthodox Church. ... show more

  • Angels with earbuds
Format: Paperback
Eve Tibbs explains the meaning of so many elements of icons that I never understood or noticed before, and how they are tied to Scripture. For example, the angels in icons always looked to me like they are wearing earbuds! Those ribbons actually denote the status of the angels as messengers from God. This book was so interesting, so informative, so GOOD, that I have purchased 5 additional copies to gift to the Sunday School and a few friends at church. I will be looking at the icons in church with new eyes... ... show more
